The stock speakers sucks big time. I changed them within a month (front, rear) installed an amp and a woofer. Trust me, it's a worthwhile investment.

the stock speakers are 6x9 on the rear and 5x9 on the front. poor sound if blast.

change mine @ a shop along Jln jurong kechil...they are quite pro.

run a 6.5 component, a woofer and a amp at the rear shld do the job @ normal sound vol.

at higher vol, may need sound proofing cos our 8 panels vibrate everywhere

The stock speakers are merely "okay". I have my head unit set for the following for the most accurate sound:

Bass: 0 or +1
Mid: -3
Treb: +3 or +4

Fader: +1front

You won't be able to really crank the volume on the stock unit, but if you're over the "louder is better" thing, it'll be fine. Unless you're under 23yrs of age (or so).

It's slippery slope... first you change the speakers cuz the stock speakers are not that fantastic (they'll do fine, but just not great... like most stock speakers). So you sit back and enjoy the fine performance of your new speakers (Focal and Rainbow make great speakers without busting your bank account). Throw in a couple of nice amps (the Rockford ones look shiok) and you're ready to rock and roll!

Then your mind starts screwing with you... hey... if the stock speakers are not great and I can make the sound so much better by changing them, what about the stock sound system? It can't be that great either right? Then you realized that you can't change the head unit of the RX-8 without defacing the entire console.

So you do some digging around this forum and find that you can install a Pioneer sound processor. You do so and suddenly you discover how much you've been missing from your music. Vocals that were missing started turning up, and placement of instruments became much more accurate. Wow!

Wait... why stop there? The Pioneer sound processor lets you connect your iPOD to the car, so let's install the iPod module too. And oh yeah... the analogue radio system that comes with the car doesn't do justice to your new system. Let's also upgrade to a DAB digital radio module with external antenna which delivers CD quality radio and eliminates the poor radio reception of the stock radio.

BUT... can you really make do with the new speakers, iPOD module and DAB radio when the bass is so lacking? Pop by the audio shop and discover the wonders of having a 8" or 10" sub in your boot. And oh yes... soundproof your doors and roof for that extra omph at the same time... and you're there!

It's a long and slippery slope... been there and done that. And you know what? This sound upgrade stuff is something that REALLY makes the difference, and you will really enjoy driving your RX-8 with all that great music. And you can bring along your purchases to your new car even if you decide to change cars in future, since none of it is RX-8 specific. I've spent quite a fair bit on the sound, and you do get superior music in return, and it's something you can hear and appreciate even though you're not an audiophile (I'm not).

Just a word of caution. Like most stuff in life, there's a point where you can spend tons of money just to get a slight improvement. Try to buy the mid-range stuff where you get the best bang for buck, and don't over-do the stuff. I know a friend who spent so much on his sound system and had to sell off some of his gear because it made the car too heavy! So go easy and have a good time enjoying your car and the music.

Dont spend too much on your car audio, as our car are quite noisy so it does not justify to install a very good and expensive audio system.

Unless u drive at 1700-2000rpm all the time, then will will be able to enjoy your audio system.

But u are into Techno or Trance, then thats another case.

The lousy speakers that you all are talking about is the BOSE system in the car?? god.. wat type of music you guys listen to? Im really really satisfied with it. In fact, my family and friends have sat in my car, they love the system. It generates very hard bass too. I listen to alot of progressive trance, hard trance, progressive house, rap and so on. hmm...

rx8-8888: The lousy speakers referenced here are the cheap paper speakers that are made in Indonesia (I think). I mean no disrespect to the country, just the speakers that came with the stock 8 (non-Bose system) so no flaming pls.

hi

thanks for replying. my budget is about 1k for front component and one amp. i listen mostly to chinese pop like Jacky Cheung. more focused with good vocal and slight bass. appreciate any advice.
i checked with Mr Foo from the audio shop beside Monster G but he did not really recommend me anything.

oh icic, got abit confused here because in the earlier post i read something about BOSE audio system. That made me doubt my standards in looking at things. Firstly the car, people has been saying its under powered, but i feel its really more than enough for me and takes me as fast as I want, although its just human to want more thats why im purchasing a FI. secondly is the audio system. hehe dont mean anything just performing some self analysis.

Hey Lawrence,

From what you said the above, I guess the suitable choice are metal dome tweeters as they would sound brighter. I was previously using Rainbow Profi Vanadiums. Details are awesome but lacking in mid bass.

However, the best advise anyone can give you is to actually listen to the speakers cause there's no point recommending a particular model/brand as what our ears define 'good' are different.

My 2 cents
