Anyone did porting?
 
Was talking to my mech... he was saying something about sealing the original port for the exhaust and then moving it to the back or side? wah lao!! I was damn stone when he was talking to me...... Only see his mouth move and didnt understand what was coming out of it....till he said.... 300bhp without turbo.

Fujita Eng. idea ? use 13B-REW rotor housing with 13B-MSP side plate with e exh. ports blocked ? ECU control ? just wait for Fujita to do & verify it . Want more WHP, R.P. Axial Flow supercharger/ECU tuning seen to be release soon, with USD<>SGD rate now around 1.59 & R.P. SC may be price around USD4000<>SGD6400, + shipping charge + GST + installation locally approx. SGD8000-8500 ? send them your car ECU + inform them e Octane rating petrol u using on your car. But best i think no need to worry about e turbo submerge in rain water when drive thru flooded area + clean & nice oem carmat

rx8 u wan to squeeze out HP oredi very hard.. one porting can easily 300bhp?? a bit unbelievable leh.....

agree with tems900. U wan direct increase in HP, go for FI.

I am no guru.... So if he tells me it gives 300bhp... I will accept it with a pinch of salt till I dyno and see it myself. And the price wise is almost comparable to turbocharging. If porting can give as much as the turbo could and maintain as stock looking as possible(thats why i wanted to know after moving exhaust from 1 part to other, will it be obvious?), in the long run..... with inspection from LTA.... Porting like a better choice right?

before i got the 8, i vaguely recalled someone mentioning that's basically what mazda did to the renesis, by moving the exhaust port so as to gain horsepower to counter the lack of FI. so not sure if it is similar to what your mech mentioned. if it is true, then maybe only aplicable to RX7's 13B only?

also any modification to exhaust is illegal and needs LTA approval. altho i agree it is not as obvious as FI mods.

That's what I thot.... Coz he said all existing exhaust will be used back.... just that the location is slightly different.

Almost similar to wat FEED is trying to do...... If they can do it, i'll pay a visit to them....... 300HP is possible becos renesis got bigger intake port..... Plus the 13b-rew exhaust port....

Just for info:
What he is referring to is what you call porting...
there are a few types of porting commonly used in rotary engine...esp in Aussie.
the common one will be bridging port which will give you approx additional 30 hp (thats provided all exhuats and inatke etc tec is done up).
The next one which they use it on the circuit Peripheral porting....this is the hardcore ones which will give you loads of power..

Porting requires new EMS ......like Motec etc...
You basically have to reconfig the ecu ..like what Fujita is doing ...the ported the 13b...(check your Hyperrev for pics)...
I have check with imperial concept (i think the mech there done it before ...a ported 13b) but its quite cosyly and you need to buy new housing , maybe rotor...etc...

The inlet and outlet ports on the engine are usually smaller than those of the manifolds that connect to them. This is not very good for airflow and airflow is something you need for power generally the more freely air flows the better although some turbulence created near the valve inlets can aid combustion, providing more torque and because of this air swirling devices are becoming popular either added to the exhaust pipe or just before the injection rail. Taking an impression of the manifolds in cardboard and using this as a pattern with a grinding wheel on the heads intake ports to ensure a smooth air flow around the edges aiming to cut turbulence around the join area with a smooth mated surface.

Taking this further inside the engine head you can smooth out the internal chambers leading up to the valves and maximise the airflow. Special equipment can assist in this job with computer controlled inlet port boring - this is really the only way to ensure perfect airflow within the head.

Its a good way to increase power but it affects drivability dramatically. I think there is a article on this in a aussie car mag (autosalon?) 2 months back.

Thanks for explaining that. Learnt a new thing now.

So, correct me. If u the impression of the current manifold to do porting, is it correct to assume u cannot change ur manifold from then on? I'm assuming different brands of manifold wil differ in size.

my sense is that the mech wasnt taking about the usual port and polish where one tries to smoothen the airflow but rather re-locating the exhaust port altogether.

i dun think so too. also, such modications would sure bring whole lots of problems. unless one has a dedicated mech and lots of time to visit workshops, dont think it is sensible to do so. on a related note, thru my observations, i have little confidence in mechs in the north, jobs are generally untidy and messy. seen some of their work on FIs and serious exhaust mods.
