Advice for first 30 days
Hello fellas,
Ok, meeting up with you guys last week was a mistake. A BIG MISTAKE!! Because everyone asks "Are you excited about getting your car?" or "Not kan cheong meh?" or "Bruther, I couldn't sleep until my car arrived..."
Guess what? Now I cannot get my mind of it as I'm waiting waiting waiting. At this rate, I think I would have finished reading every online article I can about the RX8 and Renesis/Rotary engines by the time my car arrives! :p
(Off-topic: I chanced upon a copy of Car & Driver Sep issue with Long-Term test for RX8 and bought it! Though I think article available on their website.)
Anyway, to keep my mind occupied, can some of you seasoned hands dish out some advice on what-to-do, what-not-to-do for the first 30 days of ownership? In other words, how to do a proper run-in for the car/engine, etc.
All advice is good... more to read!! :D
Thanx!

RX-8 Break-In
Mazda's Guidelines
The Mazda RX-8 Owners Manual lists the following information for the break-in period of a new vehicle:
"No special break-in is necessary, but a few precautions in the first 1000 KM (600 miles) may add to the performance, economy, and life of your Mazda.
- Don’t race the engine.
- Don’t maintain one constant speed for long.
- Don’t drive constantly at full-throttle or high engine RPM for extended periods of time.
- Avoid unnecessary hard stops.
- Avoid full-throttle starts."
A review of the Mazda RX-8 Service Manual Highlights revealed the following information regarding break-in:
"A fluorocarbon resin coating has been added to the trochoid surface (rotor housing) for improved initial break-in."
Racing Beat's Guidelines
The Mazda guidelines are reasonable and prudent. If you have any questions or uncertainly regarding the break-in period, we suggest you follow these official recommendations.
We receive many requests for our recommended break-in procedures. The following are Racing Beat's recommendations:
- For the first 1000 miles do not accelerate under full throttle.
- During the first 1000 miles do not exceed 4000 RPM.
- For miles 1000-2000, expand the RPM upwards - but do not accelerate at full throttle.
- Over 2000 miles, full throttle and high RPM is acceptable.
In summary, our guidelines offer a progessive method to increase the working loads placed on the engine.
Oil Change
The Mazda RX-8 Owners Manual indicates that the engine oil and oil filter be changed every six (6) months or every 7500 miles, whichever comes first. Racing Beat supports this recommendation.
Mazda recommends the use of SAE 5W/20 with a quality designation of ILSAC or SL.

Thanks for the guide! Let's see...
"During the first 1000 miles do not exceed 4000 RPM"
Why sure... I'll just crawl from A to B for the first 5 tanks of fuel (which should burn for a long long time at low RPM right? )
Seriously, how many of you did this? Tell me tell me... it can't be true! I remember the test drive and I was hitting 4000 RPM from sneezing too hard. lol.

Of course I was joking lah... just in case it wasn't clear. Will try to meet up when I can, just that Friday nights aren't exactly my "free" nights if you know what I mean.
It was nice meeting up with you guys, and awesome seeing so many RX8's together.
Cal> Getting it sometime in Oct... grrr... can't wait.

Hey Ezzy, thanks for the link. Interesting read. I use bookmark so forgot that there are many other sections in this forum, including useful stickies and faqs.
Btw, with the engine eating up oil in the early days, all you fellas carry oil in the car? Would you recommend that I buy the Mazda oil from MM (what price?) on day of collection or any recommendations for local conditions?
Cheers.

use that to subsequently top up ur engine oil. for future top ups, so long as u r gg back to mazda for servicing, they will use this oil....... its available everywhere and being the basic mineral oil, its actually very cheap.

It looks great. If only you can do away with the two supporting vertical metal bars and it will look perfect!

Cost S$7 4 half lit in sin. But RM 14 for 1 lit across the big drain.
