Question Tracker

I know this is re-starting an old thread, but having done a brief search I coulcn't find any definative answers.

What are the thoughts on fitting a Tracker or other such system.

From an insurance quote point of view I can't see it making that much difference,as I have been quoted £451 without.

What are the merits of the systems?

Also if my RX-8 is stolen, do I really want it back, in whatever state the thief has left it?

Thats the question realy.

It also look slike the police arnt bothered about it unless theres several vehicles at same place, so they can break a proffesional gang.

I think the cars security(as most modern cars) is that good I'm more woried about having the keys nicked off me, or carjacked than anything else.

Not sure I'd want the car back afterwards.

If it dramatically reduces the insurance premiums then maybe but otherwise not as they not cheap to fit and I am not sure I want my car back after it has been thrashed. Also, tracker not a great deterent as cannot be advertised on car.

The only problem with not getting your car back after it has been stolen is that there may be another 8 month wait for a new one...........

My thoughts exactly. And why wouldn't you want it back anyway? If it's been nicked then it won't be by some joy rider - they can't get past modern security systems. Anyone taking it is a serious car thief who wants to sell it on - why would they damage it, other than what they had to do to break into it (which will be obvious and can be fixed)?

My problem with fitting a tracker is just whether it's worth the expense. What does it cost and how likely is the car to be stolen anyway?

I'd much rather get my money and go and buy something else. I don't care who had stolen it, irrespective it would not be the same car for me. I tend to TLC all my cars and this would be a violation from which I would not recover to regain the same pride.

Just me maybe.

I agree with Rael.

Oh - except "Go and buy something else" should be "Go and get another RX8".

Delay would depend on backlog etc but possibly. I would buy something else as I would then see the 8 as a target as it happened to me (although I know cars are stolen all the time)

Interesting. I can't say I feel that way at all. Not even slightly. Maybe it's because I have always bought secondhand cars up to now (you never really know what's happened to them before you bought them anyway).

Dont know about anyone else but whatever car it is i wouldnt want it back after its been knicked.

Simply because they will have roasted the life out of it, pissed/thrown up/crapped (delete as applicable) and as a non-smoker smoked the equivalent of 200 **** - i hate *** ash everywhere.

Personally id rather they torched it or threw it over a cliff than get it back.

As far as trackers go i dont see the point the premiums are so low in comparison that a tracker is not significantly going to dent the premiums. I would only fit a tracker if it was likely to get the money back over what i would class the lifetime of the vehicle in my possession. 3 years. I dont think for the initial outlay of 3-400 quid for a half decent tracker system you will recover that in the premiums over the 3 years.

Why on earth would they do that? The only people with the skills to steal a modern car with a decent imobiliser are professional car thieves (and even they sometimes find it too dificult - hence the spate of key thefts from houses and car-jackings). They are not going to deliberately abuse a car they want to sell on. Or drive it like maniacs and drawn attention to themselves (in a stolen car!). They are not joyriders.

Actually no you mention that i would have to concur.

Only i had my vauxhall carlton GSI nicked and thats what i got back. When i told the unsurance company i didnt want it they didnt leave me much of a choice.

Hence the comment ( it was of course in general, specific cars like the rx will of course be nicked to order and i take your comments on board)

This is the problem of course. In the situations like that when you don't want it back you've got no choice anyway. With or without a tracker it would be pretty quickly found after they dump it and you're then stuck with it. But hopefully the security on an RX-8 will stop that hapenning.
