From the sublime....

I've just put my car, an FTO,into autotrader to see what I can get for it. If I sell it soon, I will only have my other 'car' to drive until the RX8 turns up.

My other car is a Smart (seriously). I can't take this for too long.

Anyone else driving something a little sedate or understated while awaiting the arrival of our much loved wheels?

Well, I've been driving my Landrover Defender CSW V8 for months... Racked up 22,000 miles in the last year... It sure does drink... but I love it dearly and for all the bad things people say about Rover engineering, it's never once whinced at anything... pulling out tree stumps and moving tonnes of concrete blocks to pushing past 80 for 3 hours solid... it's done everything.

I once went dirt track racing in a Defender. They are practically indestructible! My spine unfortunately is not, so it hurt like hell when we hit a large stone sleeper at about 30 and I must have flown about 3 feet out of my chair!

Defenders are cool

For my last trick, while re-doing my garden... I moved the shed... 3 times...

The thing is 12 foot long, by 8 foot wide, and probably weighs more than half a tonne... Well over a tonne with everything in it...

First I butted the landrover up against it and moved it about 40 feet down my garden over the old lawn... Then later I tied a rope round the shed and pulled it back... since then I've moved it about 6 feet in the other direction... LOL..

Never forget a friend of mine who used his Defender to align some 12"x12" timber beams in a replica saxon longhall (Was being built)... Q, how do you "tweak" a 25' long foot square beam that's set 6 feet into the ground... A. Butt a landrover up against it and push, while some (trusting) friend holds a spirit level against said timber.

I'm driving a Volvo V70. Guys that have been ribbing me for being a flat-cap owner are amazed of my new choice - they think it's a wind up...I can't wait to see their faces...

Some of you are driving better than I do. I my zelf don't have a car any more since I sold my MGF. Now I drive my fathers Daihatsu AUTTOMATIC, and I hate it. I feel like an old guy, now I feel as my paper age (52). I realy hope that december will bring change as (again) promissed by the head-importer for Belgium.

MX-5 at the moment, not sedate by any means but a little lacking the power department. I was considering a sc/turbo the moment I bought it, but for a while the money just wasn't there and then it was getting too old to think about splashing out...

At the moment I effectively have no car at all - was away on business for three months and meanwhile, tax and MOT expired. Didn't get anywhere with organising an MOT from the US, and on return couldn't find the bloody registration document to renew the tax! So now I'm stuck without a car for a couple of weeks while I wait for the DVLA to sort it out. Resorting to a rental car tomorrow - after just one week I can't take it anymore! It's all a little sad really...

I'm driving a Rover 200 diesel!!!!

It's a works car my team use when carrying out surveys on the motorway (prior to digging them up!!) It therefore resembles a police car except we obviously have an orange blaze bar.

Comes in very handy when there are queues on motorway & I feel the need to look at the hard shoulder!!

The car was free & I live near work (3 miles) & as I had to get rid of my RX7 when I got married it sort of did!! (I started on a Focus diesel turbo which was ok then I got a renault scenic which was great with the kids then they gave my the Rover

Then I heard rumours of the 8

Then I had to persuade the wife

So back to having to pay for 2 cars & a guarantee that I go the long way to work!!

I've currently got an MX3 V6 which is very much the predecessor to the RX8 in size, sportiness and practicality.

Lovely little high reving engine and great handling car, sets 4 just about, although with only two doors. With 130 horses its not the most powerful thing about, but holds its own very well if you how to get the best out of it. I've lovely thrashed it up to 119,000 miles, while waiting for something better to come along which, and I'd nearly given up hope until I saw the production RX8.

I'd actuially seen the RX-Evol at the 2000 Birmingham motorshow and not thought much of it at the time, but it certainly has blossomed in to its final production shape.

Cheers
---Dave

A Punto 55. I sold my Imprezza Turbo in March because I was only going to have to wait until July/August for my RX-8

Currently driving my almost as rare Mazda Xedos. A smooth 2.0 V6 that's done 85,000 miles and still feels like new (but drinks a little more oil). I've been red-lining her ever since I ordered the RX8 and have been surprised at just how quick she is ... raced an Audi A3 the other day that I thought was an old woman's car. Didn't realise until I got home and checked that it is 1.5 seconds faster to 60 on paper. Mind you, still managed to overtake it in the end

Heh I know the feeling. My MX-5 is off the road right now (not broken - DVLA issues arising from being away for while) so I'm thrashing the bejeezus off a tiny Clio rental car, and it's surprisingly quick when you put your mind to it. Or quick-feeling anyway, and that's half the battle...

So we have a 50/50(ish) on OK cars to tide us along, and some we would normally NEVER have.

I wonder how much the cheapest (new) car going costs? Anyone know what it is and how much?

The little Perodua (who?) Kelisa is the cheapest around at five grand or so. At that sort of price, how can you complain? You could pay that much for a TV without too much trouble

Hey, I am Scots! (just kidding, the previous post was a grammatical disaster)

Our temporary cars seem to be 50/50 between something we could admit to buying purposely and something we would only ever have as a temp.

AND in that rough vein, what is the cheapest new car currently on sale in the UK? (even correct punctuation!)

:D
