Part exchangers
To those of you who have part exed a car for the Rx8 - what sort of vlaue did you get and was it competitive?
I want to sell my T5 privately but with d day looming I may have to p-ex and bite the bullet on the loss. I can't afford to have two cars for any length of time.

I asked my dealer on a price for the Golf a few weeks back. He phoned around and came back to me with "a great price" his words, of £19k.
I sold it the day before yesterday at a reduced price for a quick sale of £22,600 and I had 3 people offer the asking price after I took the deposit on it.
Thats dealers for you, I guess they want to make at least 20% on the ticket price.

This week I was offered £10,000 for my Audi A2 1.6 FSI Sport as trade-in. It’s less than a year old and has several expensive options. I know options don’t hold their value well, but they should help at least get book value. So I don’t think this is a good offer. Trade-in value looks to be more like £11,500 and similar examples in a private sale seem to go for £12,500-13,000. Remember this car still has over 2 years of Audi warrenty left. So I was not at all impressed and will try another dealer.
In fact the dealer so far has not been at all helpful in any respect. I called twice to arrange the test drive and was told someone would call me back. No-one did. On the third call I managed to make an appointment, but when I turned up no-one knew anything about it. I had to wait 40 minutes till their demonstrator returned and a salesman was available. I then had to chase again to get a price for my car. I am left with the impression that the dealer felt I would by an RX-8 at any price, which I won’t, with no effort on his part.
I’ll probably try another couple of dealers. But having looked at the finances I’m tempted to wait till March ’04. If I buy now – even assuming I can get an acceptable price for my A2 – I’ll have to skimp on the options. If wait 4 months my current car will be paid for by then and I can save a bit in the meantime. As I plan to keep the car for at least 3 years it seems sensible to wait a bit, rather than spend 3 years wishing I’d bought the options. Not that It wouldn’t be nice to be driving about in one sooner

My car would be on a dealers fourcourt at £24k+ and the best price was £19k, a clear £5k profit less the valet. I'm in business myself so I understand profit margins but on a high ticket product you generally do not make that sort of margin.
I wish I did

I would have thought that a 1.6 sport would easily sell privately though being the top of the range.

18ME - Thanks, yes that's it, though mileage is below average. And the options would be c£2000 list.
I agree that I'm probably best to sell privately when the time comes. And I still think I'll find another dealer.

I sold my car back in March - thinking I would get my 8 in July, what a mug I am. I had a silver alfa 156 2.0TS, it had the rare auto delta customised body styling, 18" Azev A Alloys, Proper Recaro Laether seats, and that wooden effect steering wheel + thousnads of pounds woth of audio system. the car was mine since new, W reg, Full dealer service history, my dealer tried to offer me £6,500.00 at the time, I nearly hit him
Sold it in the trader a few weeks later for £9,750.00 - the guy who bought loves it. I would advertise privatly now - or your gonna let Mazda have you strung by the b*lls again.

I`m doing a dealer part-ex on a Ford Puma, 2 years old average mileage. Checked parkers price guide and what car which both said £7500. Paid £3 online to get a glasses quote for my car tailored for mileage and speciification and that come back £8500 for A1 condition.
Went armed with info to my dealer expecting to get stiched, and lots of negotiating, and he offered £8500 anyway, shot all my arguments down in flames before I had chance to use em
In short, I think its worth getting hold of the Glasses quote for you car and your cars spec. This is a good arguing tool, since this is what the dealers always use, gives you a level playinf field

Hey Sexy Rexy
Sorry to hijack this thread, but I want to just ask a few questions.
Did you have the full "J11" bodykit?
Also, what size where the tyres on your wheels? Did you getting any rubbing inside the arches?
Sorry to ask so many questions, but I have the full J11 kit on my 156 and I want to get some 18inch wheels for it.
Thanks.

When I went in to discuss a deal, the dealer said he would give me a projected price of bottom book +£200 against a new RX8 for November delivery (this was a few months ago when they were due in july)
He told me that against another mx5 (My tradein) then he would be prepared to offer up to another £2000 pounds (current tradein was around £12000 for a 12 month old car)
There was also absolutely no chance of any discount of list price or any other freebies included in the sale.
So they are having their cake and eating it as far as I can see.
But when were car dealers ever any different!

Therefore should we deduce that:-
a) dealers are restricted to a certain quota of RX-8s?
b) the dealer margin on the RX-8 particularly slim?
c) they are acting as a cartel?
We all know the dealer will want to make the biggest profit possible. We also know that if there is not enough profit in the deal then they are not interested. Fair enough. That’s why we try to knock them down to what we think is the best deal (for us) that they’ll accept. But why turn away a perfectly good deal (i.e. selling a car for list price) by attempting to stiff the buyer on the trade-in price? The dealer just wouldn’t risk it (or would at least try to negotiate) if he knew that you could walk in to another dealer and get a much better deal. Unless of course he is limited in the number of RX-8s he can get, in which case he’s looking to maximise profit on those sales with the trade-in deal.
I have heard stories of Mercedes dealers refusing cash deals (in preference to customers with a M-B to trade-in) when they have a cancelled order with immediate delivery on their hands. I assume this is because their franchise prevents them from selling over list price.

Personally, just got a PX price for my TT back from my Mazda dealership against fully spec'd 8.
Car - 2001 TT Coup 225 Silver (common I know!), 29,000 miles, leather, BOSE, Xenons
PX Price £18,300
Not quite sure what to say to that, other that 'I'll look elsewhere'.
Bought the car 6 months ago at £22k which means either I was ripped-off or the dealer is no doubt going to make a pretty nice margin if I sold to them and got carried away with the impatience to get hold of an 8

Adjust accordingly for mileage and it would be worth more depending on the type of extras on your car.

After starting this thread I've finally got a part ex figure on my T5 and they are taking the p**s.
Cap clean (which it is) gives a value of just under £6.5k and that's without the extras and the dealer has offered me £4.5k. There's no way I can take that as the finances I've arranged don't quite meet with that figure so looks like I won't be picking my car up on Tuesday.

Hi Guys, first post!!
Well, I had a test drive today, and I want one :D
Unfortunately, the dealer only offered me £8200 for my car, even though I went armed with a glass's price of £10050 (for average, and I would consider my car above average), even bottom dollar was £8870, according to Glass's. I also had ads from various VW garages (the car's a VW passat) with the same car selling for between £11500 and £13000 (the one at £13000 was the closest to my car in terms of milage and month registered). Anyway, they said the would have to work on the price next week, but I don't think they'll come up with the right price. Looks like I won't be getting an RX8 anytime soon.

Really bad time to sell anything, I am being raped on my TTC part-ex but can do nothing as the pre-Xmas market is flat and full of heavy discounting. I am pushing my dealer for accessory discount to compensate the price loss I have to swallow because of Mazda RX8 delay.
