Mpg
Reading in more detail some of the US threads on MPG it is surprising to note quite how bad the consumption has been for some driver. Most are getting high teens, low twenties and accepting the thirsty rotary but others are low teens only and getting a very poor return and of those many are handing their cars back (under the reduced hp offer). Its not the reduced hp which is disappointing people, its the terrible MPG.
As somebody who is not blinded by the rotary requirement, the test drive better be something special to make the petrol costs worthwhile.

Autocar got 22.5 mpg average over their 900 miles test which included motorways and test track.
I think I would be happy if I could get the same.

at the moment this is the one thing that could force me to reconsider the car.
bhp: check - dont really care
headroom: check - i fit
luggage space: check - enough
oil: check - pain but fine
mpg: ? - if i start pulling 20K/yr which is possible in my job it wont make a sensible first car.
lets face it the americans are complaining and gas there costs peanuts.

I find the american moaning really irksome also !
Their Petrol is almost free anyway - it would be the same as us complaining we are only getting 90mpg.
"Goddam you Maz-dar - I am only getting 90MPG from my goddam sonofabi*** RX8 - I'm gonna sue your ***... etc etc.."
Kind of annoying....
Serious for a moment - If Autocar hit 22.5 MPG of enthusiastic journalist driving and track I am delighted !
My 65mph M1 run every day will easily make the 25MPG I want.
On a related note , it is not that bad really. Those who have had RX7s will know what I mean.... There are other cars out there that are really thirsty. Check out the consumption of a WRX at some point - maybe they are better now , but they used to be shocking ! (and less power than the RX8)

I think a lot of the really poor MPG figures from the US are for cars with less than 1000 miles on the clock. Most people seem to report MPG gets better over time.
The Autocar RX-8 was obviously run in, hence the (just about) respectable 22.5 mpg.
