Angry Insurance con by elephant.co.uk

Just had a quote from elephant.co.uk for the RX-8. 34, 9 years NCD, protected, car on drive, £250 vol excess, 1 SP30 two years ago and one no fault accident 18 months ago where a car pulled out in front of me (recovered all losses from his insurance).
Quote £650 give or take a few pence.

Went back into website and deleted reference to accident even though i stated that it didnt affect my NCD.
Quote £558!!!!!

So i rang them to be told that the quotes were correct and having a no fault accident such as mine is an indicator that i will more likely be at fault in future. What a load of bollox.

So i checked egg.co.uk and they were £515 with £200 excess whether i mentioned accident or not (which clearly i will). It goes to show that most insurers will try to scam you every which way.

P.S. Glad i phoned elephant.co.uk though as i never expected to hear the line "please wait till one of our elephant handlers becomes available"!!! Quality one-liner from the swindlers.

Also tried AXA and they dont have the car on their site yet.

I would have thought that your insurance would have been cheaper. Is it not a fact that those who drive titanium coloured cars rarely go above 70mph and certainly not above 20mph on their sunday drive.

I'd hate to be seen to be defending car insurance companies but I think you're being a little unfair calling them con artists. There is no actual dishonesty here is there? They are free to quote you anything they want, based on whatever criteria they consider important. If it doesn't work out competitive for you then go elsewhere.

Well Chris, you most certainly are defending them. But if you feel its reasonable for you to pay more insurance if someone smacks into you then thats fine by me. The rest of us will not put up with being deceived and will go elsewhere. I wonder how long the swindlers can survive then.

Nice of you to be so British about it though.

One thing to note, its best to keep swithing insurance companies.

Most insurance companies "quote you happy" for the first year then in years 2 and onwards shaft you. Why cause they have to be competitive to bring in new buisness that they have to pass the cost onto existing customer base that they rely on dummies like me from moving around. Incidently the same goes for mortgages...

That's exactly what I said - just go elsewhere. I wasn't aware that insurance companies did this so thanks for the warning - I don't think it's reasonable and I'll be on the lookout for it in the future. I just don't think it justifies words like "con" and "scam" (and we should probably be careful about making such allegations in a public forum).

When collecting quotes beware of the small print. Some may seem more expensive but carry 'peace of mind', ie they will pay out quickly and without major fuss.

Directline for example do not cover you for hire car/ loss of earnings if your car is off the road being repaired.

Sorry, but I think they are legalised crooks. By that they dont do things illegally, but personally they are imoral.

For example, I paid extra a few years ago to protect my no claims. Had one claim (vandalism) and when I went to move they wouldnt confirm my no claims - on the grounds that with another company it would be classed as a claim!

Likewise I have just had to claim with elephant because the car that hit me was not insured (they have actually been pretty good and are chasing him for my excess), but I guarantee even though my no claims is protected, it will go up next year.

As has been said b4, I'll juts look about. (www.confused.com) and move. I understand they quote cheap to win business, but what about retaining customers - a novel idea!!

Shop around at least every 3 years if you don't want to be mugged by them.

Also bear in mind that some are better at paying out than others!!

Spot on - I've never stayed with an insurer for more than a year. Speaking of More Than - that's who I'm currently with and they were over £100 cheaper than anyone else - they haven't got the RX8 on their site yet though.

I'll have to take with that myself.
My car was hit in a car park, when I wasn't even in it. The other guy was still there (as there were a dozen witnesses) and his insurance company paid up completely. I wonder if I am now a bigger risk. ?

I've been with direct line for 6 years, and they have always been very good.
However, I'm not sure I'll stay with them this time. When my car were hit I told them first, and they said they'd sort the car out.

But, I had to take the car to the repair shop and book the car in. Then they wouldn't give me a replacement car. And they said I'd have to pay the excess first and claim later. They were really unhelpful, and kept asking of the other guy had admitted liability yet (something they tell you never to do even in this situation). They even claimed it would take ages to find the other guys insurance details. (meanwhile the claim sits on my NCD). So I phone the guy up, asked him for his details, and read them out to direct line.

This all happened on the first day.

The next morning the other guys insurance phoned me. They said they would take the car away, lleave a replacement, and return mine within a week, with no hastle at all. And they did

So, if you believe the adverts, it's great if you get hit by a direct line driver, but not so good if you are the direct line driver. So I'm going elsewhere this time. All of you lot should go to direct line of course

Similar problem for me. Van drove into my 2nd car, van driver had a heart attack (before or after accident nobody knows) and has since died. My car was put into their preferred repair shop but parts took 3 months. Meanwhile I was renting a car the cost of which I need to claim back from the van drivers insurance via Direct line 'uninsured losses' policy which Directline should be fighting for. However I am getting the run around re drivers details being difficult to locate, other insurance co will not admit liability, only monthly chases only etc. I have nearly £2500 of rental expenses I have funded and gathering pace on my credit card.

Is this a standard Directline get-out procedure?

Anyway, they will not get my business irrespective of premium.

rael.
