Badge gone?

I posted a note on the 'general' forum as this one was so dead but I am not sure which is worse at the moment.

Anyway, my fear is that the brand new RX8 badge may be a wonderful target for those sad collectors of such items but I'm the only one who seems to think so.

This thought was as a result of a missing VW badge seen where I park were the thief had badly damaged the whole area trying to leverage the badge out.

I doubt it as I think the RX-8 badge is not all one piece. Arent the '-' and the '8' seperate?

The VW thing was a craze years ago from a band (beastie boys?) who started waring the VW badges.

As long as you dont see Papa Roach or someone with Mazda badges round their necks in the next few months we should be OK. :D

I had my brand new integraR for 3 days before some d***less spotty youth screw-drivered the badges off it.

So - it does still happen I assure you.

Thing is - what can you do ? Buy a new one , touch up the scratches and wait. Either that or have no badge.

(I quite like the south african system of the undercar flamethrowers. Or electrifying the door handle. I think it is supposed to be for carjackers , but thieves would benefit too I feel. )

I think

i will get taking the badge off the RX8 myself....and stick it somewhere inside the car.....so people wont use a screw-driver to poke it off my car :D

i saw a new one from south africa where there are large metal bars under the car on the sides that are spring loaded. when some thug tries to carjack you, you hit a button and they spring out whacking the would be thief in the legs, breaking them, or at least causing them to reconsider taking your car giving you time to get away.

i think i like that system far better than the flame throwers... the company i work for now has offices in SA, and yeah, i've heard the stories: a defense mechanism like that is far more pallettable to me (not quite so finicky either).

Besides, if you had flamethrowers I would imagine it wouldnt be very good for the paint!:D
I f you are worried about the badges being stolen just take the off. I think the Rx-8 badge won't have positioning "poles" like some of the larger badges.

Just spoke to Mazda who apparently foresaw this problem and the first batch of cars (all those in 2003) will have no badge at all unless initially ordered.

Instead, they will provide each owner with a number of RX8 outside window stickers that peel off very easily.

I want the badge on mine! Does this mean I now wont get one?

I wasnt asked whether I wanted it or not when I placed the order.

WHAT!!! The rear end of the car only works with the RX-8 badge afixed. This is vandalism and should be an option not mandatory. I'm really pissed off if that's true. Look, it's totally unbalanced without it:

I've called the helpline to investigate this and they will ring me back after investigating so I hope you're not taking the liberty of bullsh*tting us Rael!

Let us know your findings lensman.

For those who want to debadge I think you need to remove the 'Mazda' badge on the left as well to balance things out.

However, I expect the badge to come with the car and not be an optional accessory.

Well they close at 20:00 so no news tonight (Wed 26th). I somehow doubt they'll bother to reply based on previous experience. If anyone happens to be talking to them for any other reason then please ask about this too. If it is true (IF!) then the more people that register their disapproval the better. I notice that Rael hasn't been back yet... hmmm...

Hold on a minute: he's joking isn't he, I think I see it now. You're joking aren't you Rael?!

Grrrrrrrrr..... An honorary April fool's day joke - bit early!

Needless to say Mazda will now think I'm even more of a headcase than they had previously realised.

rael, it did seem a bit far fetched but you had me going there for a while :D

The fact you posted without smileys etc made me think it was genuine. How are we ever going to believe you again now?

Common sense I suppose. When was the last new model launched without badge and the owners were given plastic easy-to-peel stickers which they could put on the outside windows to keep the local thieives happy?

The pic posted without the rx-8 badge is a fake, I have taken the original pic at Geneva Autoshow and it has the badge.

Are you sure Gaz? Looks like one of those rumoured de-badged cars to me, yours looks a bit fake IMHO!
