Your experience @ drifting with an rx8

Needless to say drifting an rx8 is harder than most. Yesterday at the SDCR gymkhana training event, I spent most of the day at the novice section attempting to do donuts and J hooks. Was I successful? yes and no, to break traction on an rx8 at low speed you have to hit 6-8.5k rpm and drop the clutch, or clutch kicking (easier said than done). Oh and what makes things abit easier is pulling the fuse for ABS and disabling DSC (hold that button down for at least 10 seconds). With ABS on and yanking the ebrake, it seemed like the car would try to compensate and brake at the front. Overall I had lots of fun talking to people and watching people slide. With more time and tires i'm sure to become better. I have a few pictures I will be posting here soon.

what you need to learn is how to take advantage of what you do have.... we dont have a lot of power, so dont try to go into a drift powering through shit.... we have amazing handling, so use it to your advantage... throw the weight of the car around, you dont need huge clutch kicks, just use everything the car has to offer to your advantage.... i dont know how to spell it, but scandenavian flick works rather well with this car!!!! i know its nerve racking, but the less power you have, the more aggressive you need to be... you need to throw the car around, make it your bitch lol.... find the limit of the car, test every single avenue, thats how you will learn to drift this car

lol... I like that make it your bitch. I think I was abit afraid of finding that limit my first time around, in my future events I won't be as hesitant. I at least know now where to start with the RX8 as far as sliding the car. Thank you for your input.

AZR is a seasond drifter his part of risky devils so he had a better understanding on drifting...what will help you to drift is practice taking off and doing 180 turns and 90 degree turns just to get used to the car and get the fear of damaging your car...thats how I learned to drift im still an amature but its some small tips I got from my drifting buddies and so far its worked....good luck with the drift its addicting lol

Junirol 09-14-2011 02:18 AM

Drifting is addicting.. i'm getting better and not caring how my car ends up looking XD. Right now i'm tearing up my interior and getting rid of the abs system, doesn't want to work with my hydro.

rotary_FTW 09-19-2011 11:07 PM

cant wait to come up on a rx8 to slide it, best advice i can give is weld the diff and drift it like you stole it !!!!!!!!!!! practice makes perfect

rx8_504 09-28-2011 06:08 PM

did you end up taking out the abs system for the hydro?.... im about to start installing my own hydro just got my ksport handbrake in the mail today all i need now is to order some lines

Dj-Trippwire 09-30-2011 12:48 PM

I have a stock RX8 and it really does a good job at sliding and feels comfortable. I just slide on some corners by my job that are closed off when im on my way home. Love it

As much as I hate to admit it, I've yet to come across how you install the hydraulic e-brake. So.. How do you?

Effectively turning my 4 channel abs to a 3 channel system. from the abs unit take both rear channels, combine it to one and connect to hydro. From the hydro split off to the rear lines. Lol I had some trial an error, didn't know our brake system was a diagonal split til I tried tapping the master cylinder.

With our LSD its not so bad drifting, just remember to turn off the traction control o.O. I get alittle abit of wear on one tire than the other but hardly noticeable. Having a hydro is fun, alot better than our wacky parking brake. Also redesigned my to stereo :dunno:

lol maybe I'll make a DIY I have the pictures to do so.

You could say im cheating or not, but here in Winnipeg, up in canada, we got snow and ice . So far winter is really lax this year which leaves me lots of perfect drifting weather. Just enough fresh powder on the ground, even with expensive winter tires and i drift EVERYWHERE.

Sometimes i hold nights with my friends and we go to deserted parking lots and run a couple courses. I find it extremely easy to put it sideways, just hit the gas and throw it to one side.

I've only ever had it for winter driving so far but i'm excited to see how it will perform with "legal drift tires" for the summer.

Im a little new to having this rx-8 but for 2 years Ive been drifting my Ae86. People keep saying that Ill have to come up with a new style but I dont think so. Both cars dont have crazy power like some 240 with turbo swap and both of my cars handle like a dream. My only thing holding me back is that when I was drifting in my rolla I never had to had the rpms be screaming at high revs since I didnt want to blow my 20year motor. Lol

ahardy25 07-23-2012 10:54 PM

i cant get my 8 to slide at all in dry weather but in the rain i do pretty well

drifter_d 07-24-2012 12:21 AM

Running a turbo 8 and a Kaaz 2-way and I can get sideways easily.

thats the beauty of a rotary. it loves to get the shit rung out of it! i drive mine decently hard on track and ive only hit rev limiter twice in 3rd gear. most of second can be feathered depending on entry speed and whatnot. you know. but it holds up to abuse very well. just oil changes and general maintenance and itll last forever.
