I have used different tires with those rims. Originally I used the Conti Spec Hoosiers that state 225 but are really 245s. You can squeeze a 285 tire on a 8" rim like some autocrossers do.
But for track purposes you don't want to be squeezing tires on to a rim for various reasons. The sidewall if you put a wide tire on a narrow rim would be pulling the tread back of the road making the tire narrower. In addition, there would be less of a tendency to “wiggle” at corner exit (upsetting the car) when you roll back into the throttle. You can do some research on this online.
That is why most Conti ST teams run 17x9 wheel with the spec Hoosiers.
Generally, I am not a fan of running max tires as this takes away from the skill and feedback of driving hence the relatively conservative 235/245 wide tires.

I am not sure I completely understand your question but:

I personally would have went with the 245 wide tire in the Star Specs as that is the widest available in that width in that tire. As far as squeezing 285's on 8" rims (GOOD LUCK) finding a shop that could do that without destroying your rims and good luck driving on them.
I disagree with getting more feed back from a smaller tire. I have autocrossed for many years, winning a few trophies here and there and I have never heard someone say "I wished I used a smaller tire" the words always spoken were "I'm getting wider tires next time"
Anyways, thanks for the feed back, I was just curious as to your tire choice, which was probably dictated by available size and your personal preferance.
p.s. I have 245/40-18 Star Specs on my STX RX8. The reason that I didn't go wider is (the circumference is almost identical to OEM 225's and I hate fighting the wide tires on tire grooved roads.

AutoX and road racing are completely different animals. On a road race course wider tries = slower laptimes. 245 is plenty of meat for an rx8 in NA trim.
Btw... too bad i live where i do. I'd be over the bare rims probably... after forcing you to remove the tires

245s would have worked as well but as I said before I have different tires and wheels so there were other considerations.
I don't autocross but there is nothing "interesting" about my answer:
1) Autocross and track are not the same thing;
2) Feedback and grip are not the same thing, hence hearing "I want a wider tire" (if the wheel allows it) makes sense in autocross;
3) Feedback is hard to describe but steering feel, chassis responsiveness and the general communicative nature of the set up (although this sounds kinda circular) would be parts of it;
4) For autocrossing purposes fitting a wide tire on a narrow rim makes sense as you do one run from cold tires, much higher initial temps at much lower speed and are limited by your class. So in B-Stock or whatever you call it - an rx8 would be limited to a rim that has the same specs as stock: 18x8 +50. I think most B stock guys would run tires ranging from 245-275. That would not be the ideal set for the track on 8" wheel - For example for a track / race set up you would not go wider than a 245 on 17x8.5 wheel. An autocrosser would through a 265-275 on that wheel without even thinking twice;
5) I am sure that autocrossing requires allot of skill but "I have been autocrossing for years" does not mean that you can translate that to the track;
You need feedback and feel on the track as a large part of going quickly at a place like Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (formerly known as Mosport) is simply down to ballz and commitment. Having the ability to react "quicker/sooner" afforded by a proper tire set up is an important part of driving and going quicker through the corners than a guy in an evo with much wider tires also means you get to feel like a champ walking around the paddock A narrower set up also means your suspension is stressed less and you can throw the car around (say at the end of the session at a place like Mid Ohio).
Having said all that whoever buys this set is free to put as wide a tire as they like on the wheel after the star specs are done.
Cheers

I've sent you an email on gmail.
I am considering selling one of my track sets. 17x9 +45 Gold RPF1 bought new used for the track with. The wheels are lightweight and strong - used by race winning teams.
StarSpecs were ordered new from TireRack, used for wet track days [amazing wet performance], to get to and from the track and some lapping at Mosport and Mid Ohio. They still have plenty of life left in them. Tires always stored inside at room temperature. StarSpecs run wide so 235s are closer to 245s in different brands.
I will post better pictures later on tonight or on the weekend. I am located at Bayview and Steeles. Potential buyers are welcome to check them out.
ASKING $1400 for the set not interested in separating for now.
Also GI in a set of Continental Spec Hoosiers 225/45/17 used for a few track days at Mosport. As with the StarSpecs the Hoosiers are wider than other brands.
Looking for 250$ for the them or $1600 for the entire package.
