Come on guys.. it's gonna be a fun day!! I have been joining Kensai's event since day one, and there's nothing but fun with caution!!

It's about taking your car there to know it's limit!! Hope to see more 8s there...

This is the best way to know your limits and the limits of the car. I would definitely go, unfortunately I have no funds.

Don't expect many 8's or any other rotaries to show up. At least not the amount we saw on the FREE lapping session.

People get scared when you tell them they have to pay $$$$ to participate in a true lapping session!

Before doing a lapping day at Mosport I would suggest first getting some experience via the BMW schools http://www.trillium-bmwclub.ca/site/...DriverTraining and then I would start doing the lapping days.
Kensai events are very well organised, half hour on, half hour off. 3.5 hours at the Big track is more than enough for one day. Expect to spend $100 on gas.

Great turn out, the 8 ran really well!! I was passing S2000s like nothing. However, I need more power on the back straight going up the hill....it's almost like pulling teeth getting up to turn 8!! lol

Did you note your top speed on the back straight?

Rockstar,

Passing S2000's plural? Awesome.
Any other cars of interest on the track? Did Kensai bring out their Koni Acura race cars?

What kind of times were you recording? Running under 1:35??
The speedsource RX-8 ran around the 1:35's for qualifying in 2005.
The GT cars ran closer to 1:30.

Would have loved to come out - but didn't have any tires on the car that would have taken the abuse - wear bars are showing across the tread.

Anyone grab pics of the event?

Yes, we demand pics!

If you're running lower than 1:40's you're definitely moving! Getting close to the Speedsource cars would require alot of changes.

I think running a 1:39-1:43 is moving very quick for a street vehicle.

Well my girl forgot her camera at home so we took a few pix with our cells, she did video a few sessions tho, I'll post them tomorrow morning!!

Kensai's race cars are at Leguna running KONI Chellange race so they couldn't make it.

However, there were 2 factory GT3s and a GT3 Cup... few other race cars such as RSXs.. bounch of S2000s with turbo and Vortechs even CIVIC race cars with fully built ITR motors... just an awesome day!!

Some rich dude even brought a M-Benz "SLR" down... I can't even find a word to describe the sound of that car on the track!!!

Like the previous reply.. I'll post some video clips hopefully tomorrow. My best time was in the morning running 1:42... I really do wish I could've ran 1:35s like teh speedsource cars!!!! lol Although I just bolted my racing seats before this event and the car felt so much faster having NOT to fight against G-Force!!

During yesterday.. I find that I can keep up with NSXs and E46 M3s at any corner but as soon as we come outta 5B going uphill at back straight they will just pull so far from me then I'd catch them again at end of corner 2.

Do you think changing to a test pipe plus RB Race PCM Flush would make any difference?? Or I should just Turbo the car?? But I also don't want to keep on dynoing and tuning the car after turboing it that's really why I rather stay NA...

Any suggestions??

I "stood" on the break after the hump b4 corner 8 once and I just hit 195!!! That was def. really really late breaking there...

The car doesnt have nearly enough toq. to come outta 5B going uphill.... That's where I'd lose to all the big horse power cars~

In another note... I love the handling of the 8, had a great time!!!

Sounds like you had a blast!
As I thought, doing a 1:42 in a street car is very quick. Dropping below 1:40 will put you in a very fast league.
The RX-8's rule around the corners. They have very good suspension. The added weight will slow you down in the back stretch. Nothing but horsepower will get you up that hill faster.
If you're going to keep the car and don't mind tinkering with it, I would recommend turbochargering it. It's the easiest way to make more power.
But you have to be very careful with the ECU mapping. Run too much boost and you'll blow engines like there's no tomorrow.

Who's making turbo kits for 8's nowadays???

As soon as I have enough cash, I'll make my way over to Mosport for a few fast laps. Nothing too stressful, just to have some fun...

SLR showed up, huh? The thing sounds like a P51 Mustang! Awful sound! The only thing nice is the supercharger whine. Otherwise it sounds like those God awful Panoz ALMS cars.

Well.. talked to someone that I know today and he's offering me his Greddy kit for CHEAP.. and that got me thinking... But let me do a bit more research to make sure there's someone in town that can tune 8s with turbos well...

The whole purpose yesterday was all about having fun!! I didnt even think I was gonna be passing any cars but I did!! lol

Some dude with a E46 M3 was going way too fast coming down corner 2 went off the track and over-correctted the car then hit the wall at corner 3... I think that's a write-off... smashed the front and the whole side. When I passed that corner all I could see was the airbags hanging in the car... def. NOT worth it, it's just a lapping day!!

That's the whole thing with lapping days. It's there to teach you new things about your limits and the limits of your car.
You don't need to go all out all the time. The equipment won't like it and then something horrible happens.
Corner 2 & 3 always takes out cars! I've seen more than a few cars get destroyed trying to go faster around those corners.
Another popular corner for destroying cars is the last corner before the straight. I've seen more than a few Porsche's get side ways and smack the wall.
Respect the track, your limits, and the equipment. You'll go on to enjoy the ride home...

I've only been to Mosport once, for a track school. I think the best I hit on the back straight was 175. That definitely was not just before hard braking. I found these cars really do need a turbo on the back straight.

I was talking to a BMW guy I know a couple weeks ago and he said an RX8 tricked out in Rockstar logos blew its engine at Mosport. Do you know anything about that?

I thought I was the only RX8 with RockStar logo around??

I was at another Kensai's track event end of April and after 2 sessions the engine light came on... haven't blew the motor yet!! lol (touch wood)

Rockstar - Stay away from FI, and your engine should be fine.
Before going with any FI setup, I'd like to see it live through some 100% throttle applications.

IF you look at the 24hr speed/distance records that the RX8's ran a couple years ago, it is testament to the strength of the renesis.

For street use FI would not be an issue.
Why doesn't Mazda release an FI RX8? I believe the 7's were a warranty nightmare for them.

On the street, how often are you at 100% throttle? Only 10% of the time possibly? Even on tight 2nd gear twisty roads, any more than 4-5 seconds at a time with 100% throttle and you are risking serious speeding violations.

Think about a 3rd gear passing maneuver in an 80 zone - within 5 seconds you will be cresting 120 - or 40 over the limit - 50 over the limit and you are risking 5 pts, and automatic suspension.

For time-attack style lapping sessions what point is there in adding 100hp?
The way you can look at the challenge is the speedsource is capable of 1:35 with similar tires, and not much more HP (debatable if a standalone ECU is in use).
7 seconds won't be made up with 30HP, but driving and suspension mods.

Is the lack of HP detracting you from having fun?

IF you were racing and weren't competitive - sure - go for it, AFTER all the other options are exhausted.

That all being said - an extra 200-300 HP would be AWESOME
