Track Night - Thursday, June 16, Race City, Calgary
Open invitation - I mentioned this in the Calgary lunch thread, but figured it would be better by itself!
The Calgary Miata club has the south end of Race City Speedway booked for Thursday night, June 16 (5:00pm to sundown), and we always welcome anyone who doesn't mind a few rules! We run an autocross-style event, 1 car on the track at a time for 2 "laps" of the south end of the road course (layout varies, but it's usually about a 1:30 - 2:00 minute run. We don't get nearly as many cars as the Vintage Racing Club or Sports Car Club, so typically you can get in 8+ runs easily. Cost is ~$45, and a Snell90 or better (motorcycle) helmet is required. Usual autocross prep rules, all loose objects must be removed from the car, etc, no big deal.
So, anyone interested? I brought my RX-8 to one of those events last year instead of my Miata, and it surprised a lot of people with how quick it was. It's a great opportunity to test the limits of the car (and driver) (although I will caution that while it is pretty safe, it is possible to bend your car if your are intent on exceeding the limits of either. I rode with a Cobra SVT (supercharged, 400+ HP) driver last month who pushed too hard, slid off track, and nearly hit a concrete corner workers stand).
I will definitely be there (likely in the Miata, though), and we'd welcome you RX-8 guys to join us and have some fun. Let me know!
This is a great event for a first-timer. Speeds aren't that high, as we set it up to limit it to ~100 - 110 km/h max. It's sometimes possible to borrow a helmet at the track, but easier to borrow one from a motorcycle-owning friend in advance if you can. Suitable helmets can be bought at any of the motorcycle shops, you want one with the Snell Foundation rating (current is Snell2000, IIRC), and prices start at ~$120 (IIRC?) for an open face helmet. We won't be doing any formal technique instruction at this event, although at some of our events we do set up handling exercises to instruction purposes. I'll be available to provide tips and instruction if anyone likes.
Please post and let me know if you'd like to join us at the track!
Regards,
Gordon
