I agree with TheWulf, there's no way you can pick one charity that'll be a draw for everyone. If I remember correctly, you are military and you plan to hold the meet on the base in Kingston? So, why not pick a military-related charity: one that supports the military families of our fallen heros, a scholarship fund for their kids or a fund for injured veterans?

You could ask everyone attending to put one of those yellow ribbon magnets on their car (although the RX-8s have a lot of aluminum so it's hard to find a good spot) and for those who don't show up with one, have some available to buy as cars arrive. Come up with a catchy name for the meet, I dunno... 'The Rotorheads Rally for Heros' (I'm sure you can do better) and, for all the cars that will leave on the 401 heading west, have them leave the base in a convoy of cars, go through town in a sort of parade and then west-bound on the 401, which is the "Highway of Heros". Maybe ever get those window-mount Canadian flags that Can Tire sells and put one on each car, then make sure you have someone on an overpass to take some photos as the parade of 7s and 8s do a "roll past" in honour of the men and women in our Canadian Forces.

Just some ideas...

I like the idea of supporting a military purpose, but not so following the U.S. post-911 propaganda with "hero- this" and "hero-that" since everybody is a now hero since 9/11. Sorry, but the US propaganda machine having caught on so much up here is a peeve of mine :p. And this is coming from an army brat...

I agree with you there! However:

These people are the real victims of all this and they don't get the support they need. So in this particular case,

I really like cjcjag's idea! (Not that I'm biased or anything lol). But, it makes a lot of sense. Also, Canada's soldiers are pretty much coming home later this year, so I think it would be a great honour to have a sort of "welcome home" down the "Highway of Heroes" with a positive expression instead of a sorrowful one...
I, however, just received news that I may be re-deploying, so I may not make it. But, whether I'm around or not, I hope that this is a successful even and that it can become some type of annual event! Not too many 8's where I'm from, but if there's anything I can do to contribute, let me know and I'll do my best!

Hey guys, just got back this week, so sorry for no updates. I like the idea of a meet for rotaries then we have a nice parade like drive down the streets, im still trying to get some sponsors, just need to make up some sort of flyer ( photoshop skills kinda rusty ) so just start a list of the people who are coming and start advertising on all the forums. Pictures will be taken and eventually turned into a calendar which all proceeds will go to the charity and same as the 5 dollar entrance fee. anymore suggestions bring it on.Im going to go work on the flyer

I have no problem with laid-back patriotism (it's unfortunate that has almost become a bad word thanks to things like the U.S. Patriot Act which offends many Canadian sensibilities), but whatever you may choose to call them, there are 'heros' among us - by my definition, anyone who chooses a career of service to Canada or their community, whether as a member of the Canadian Forces, a police officer, firefighter or paramedic (this list is certainly not exhaustive).

My special admiration and gratitude goes out to anyone who's job involves risk to their own personal security for the benefit of the rest of society. Whether we call them heros or just great Canadian guys and gals, I'm sure we all agree they deserve our appreciation for all they do and all the sacrifices they make (little things like crazy shift-work and having to work on stat holidays to big things like leaving their family to deploy to war zones where their lives are at risk for months at a time) on our behalves.

So, if this meet will take place at CFB Kingston, then I can think of no better group to honour than our troops - those Canadians who leave their families and rush off to the worst situations (Manitoba flood of the century, Eastern Canada icestorm and of course armed conflicts) when most sane people are rushing to get away.

I like it! About the only way I think it could be better would be if the tach was indicating our famous 9000 RPM redline!

Just an FYI - I just noticed that you're planning this the weekend right after DGRR, that might hamper your attendance.

No way, I'm working in Cali right now as well.

I'm booked to be there until the end of April.

I fly down on the 8am flight Monday morning and come back on the red eye Thursday night.

I could make it to a Kingston event - it's only an hour each way for me.
And I would donate to a Greenpeace or OSPCA charity, I don't care for the others.

yeah I should be going there may 5th to June 1st, more of a support role helping the american military out with their exercises. I heard you guys have a cleaning person come and clean your rooms in the morning :O that is insane and sat tv and internet in the rooms. That is an awesome military in my mind lol.. I used to get my room trashed just because they found dust behind my drawer.

Not sure if my 8 will be on the road by then, largely in part that the military screwed up my pay and I need to pay back $3500. So this of course eats into the monies for insurance and new tires for the 8...but I'll probably be there one way or another...
