Removing cat...

Was at a chevron filling up when I started talking to a guy driving a.. 2gen ago RX7 (can anyone post pictures of what FD,FC,F-___ is? cause I still have no clue what they all look like, and what does the F-D stand for?)
He said he went head to head against one of the 8s before and won (I didn't ask where or how) but it was an automatic 8....
anyways, he said he removed his cat so he can run 12,000rpms???? does removing the cat increase your rpm?? I thought the fuel cut off was electronic?

A test pipe or straight thru pipe will increase HP, but not your engines ability to rev higher. FD is the chasis designation for a 3rd Gen RX7, FC 2nd Gen and FE is the RX8's. It's also part of the VIN number (4th and 5th digit). Mine happens to be BB6 BTW.

LOL! Next time you see that guy just point and laugh, cuz he has no clue about his redline. Even with strengthened internals and stationary gears and lightened rotors (2nd gens have heavier rotors then the 8) you'd be lucky to get close 10,000-11,000 rpm.

Next time just laugh at him.

yo RT,

no 12K revs, but removing the cat is probably the single most efficient and cheap way to get more horsepower...

it is better than getting airflow, canzoomer stage 1, exhaust, all of those things...

removing the cat makes your car deadly, with an L flash and cat removal your 8 will probably be at 250 hp.

the catch is you wont pass emissions tests without it...but i know of some places where they make a pipe for you where you can exchange your cat everytime you go to aircare...a snap on, snap off process....

Actually my understanding is that removing the cat will only gain you like 10-15 hp. Also you will have the expense of getting a mid-pipe and resonator (unless you want to kill your ear drums your passengers, and anyone around you). The cost is similar to CZ's stage I and you will get more hp from his ECU upgrade.

hmmm... interesting, actually I never read too much into those different stages of canzoomer...
the ECU upgrade probably would have less problems?
other than the noise and emissions, is removing cat bad for the car itself (engine)?

Not necessarily - the RX-8 OEM midpipe is pretty damn good.

If only! With just the midpipe out, you are looking at a 10 - 15 HP increase over the real-world 220 that the RX-8 makes stock.

Cost for a midpipe with a resonator is only about $300 (I did mine for about $240).
The power increase is substantial, but not as noticeable as a CZ box or E-Manage which will deliver about twice as much as the mid-pipe alone.
The real kicker is to do both because you can retune the E-Manage more aggressively once the CAT is out of the way.
The midpipe is a much better power upgrade than an exhaust system, however.
