Radar Detectors (GTA)

I am considering buying a radar detector. I know that they are illegal in Ontario and that there is a 350CAD fine and likely confiscation of the radar. I also know that this charge does not look good on the transcript and that it is hard to fight.
Does anyone have any experience using radar detectors in T.O.? Any particular suggestions as to what I should look for in radar detector? Or any specific models that people have tried and are willing to recommend?

My knowledge of radar detectors and anti-rd is fairly limited, Am I right to assume that the cops can only detect a radar if it is on?
I am planning to use my radar detector in a limited way, with the following distribution: 20% city, 50% 407, 20% long trips up north, 10% 401.
One thing that bothers me is the possibility of getting too preoccupied with what’s going on around me (looking for cops) and being unable to relax while driving with the RD on

Do "Toronto's Finest" still use Spectre to detect radars?

Thanks for the help.

Chris, I've known only one guy in the GTA that had one...HAD. They tracked it when he was using it, confiscated it with some sort of big fine, plus a speeding ticket without a discount. So I guess they do use a "radar radar". This was two summer ago.

My suggestion...drive so fast they won't bother chasing you

For that I will probably need an 911 Turbo, which is allot more expensive than a simple RD

Get one with a receiving unit (in the front of the car neer rad) and a display unit (no bigger than your finger) which hides nicely somewhere in the dash. They come with steslth mode (can't remember what the real name of this feature is) etc. As soon as it detects a radar detector detector, it turns its detaction capabilities off until the coast is clear. I doubt Ontario upgrades its radar detector detector equipment as very few people have them these days.

A visible unit you plug in to the lighter is simply asking for trouble and you will get caught.

Maybe you could use those that throw random speed to make police radar ineffective instead of radar detector

I know. He's refering to a Radar Scambler. That's a very serious offense messing with the airwaves and is punishable with a prison term. I don't think you want to do that!

I have the Rocky Mountain Radar and its worth the money. Theyre warranty is also if you get a ticket they pay for it. Thats how good it works, and on the up side its a jammer, but you cant tell a thing just by looking at it.
