What flash did you have before? I hadn't noticed a flat spot, but im only firing 3 plugs.

 

I had the first M flash. From day one I noticed my car, as did another RX8 owner while driving it, would flatten out up-top.

Power would rise from 5000, 5500, between 6 and 6500 it would noticably stop pulling as hard...and sorta feel like timing was being yanked from there to 7500+ before the pull would increase.

 

I had the N flash before and after I got it my mpg went down. I asked specifically what flash I received and the Service manager confirmed it to be the "R" flash. Unfortunately when they print out the customer copy of the invoice they don't include the number designation for the flash...it was on the dealer copy.


It could be my imagination but overall the engine feels smoother. I know from past experiences that Sunridge Mazda seems to be quicker than the other dealers in town for flash updates.

Hey rotten, when I called today they said I couldn't just ask for a flash, so I was like "well I had a CEL last week for a couple seconds while driving but it went away so I figured it was bad gas" (true story) and he said that's a valid reason. Weird...I thought when you brought your car in for anything they were supposed to update the flash?

Going in tomorrow to get my "R" flash, sunroof lubed, and some checkup done! yay.

 

It's crazy how it works...but, the shop has to bill somebody for work on your car. If they can't 'justify' 15 minutes? of labor to Mazda for updating your car's ECU, Mazda won't pay their bill.

 

It doesn't take 15 minutes.

Yes it takes 15 minutes. The last reflash I got done did...I waited. What's your shop doing?

 

I still have the M flash and I got rid of my flat spot by installing a REVi intake, I hope installing the next flash update doesn't bring it back ....that would be weird. I don't have a need for the next flash since I have no flat spot and fairly good mileage unless the "S" flash brings us back to 250HP...that would be sweet! :D

Okay - I got the R flash, assuming this number is correct:



Impressions? Yes, the car does seem to rev 'smoother' and the power-dip tween 6-7, or 7500 is reduced. i can still feel a small 'dip' around 6200 or so, but that dip was present on the dyno, so I expected it.

I hope it's not a placebo effect.

 

Update to this situation: the mechanic once again couldn't find anything wrong with my brakes when it was up on the hoist. He then took it for a spin, and heard the squealing. I'm now getting new brakes Tuesday, under warranty.

 

good for you on getting the new brakes installed.

Bad News: you will still get brake squeal... This is the nature of new, metallic brake pad that they squeal when you apply the brakes. Especially for people that feathers their brake when stopping. In order to get rid of the squealing, you need to "bed in" the new brake pads. Check this links:

Some people will argue that this procedure does not work. May be it doesn't but its a much easier way to fix your problem than having to schedule an appointment with the dealer, wait forever to get the fix done, then brake squeak returns after 1000miles.

Have you noticed any other changes after the you've been "R" Flashed? Is the gas consumption worse ( not that it could get much worse in my case)? Can't wait for my 5k service to happen so I can get rid of this flat spot

 

Well my mpg went down with the N flash but I've done about 4 or 5 tanks since the R flash and my mpg has gone up back to where it was before with the M flash (+2mpg)...is it because of the flash?,...too early to tell.

 

I was wondering if anybody else in Calgary got the R flash (aka Rotten's flash)? I assume that Sunridge Mazda has it ... what about NorthHill and Kramer?

rotten you burn through a lot of fuel! 4-5 tanks already! I typically fill up every 2 weeks or so.
