Planning a Trip to Newfoundland (not RX8 related)

Believe me, I would love to drive the RX-8 out there from Toronto but have opted to fly due to time constraints.

Any of my fellow RX-8 enthusiasts out in Nfld able to point out places that I shouldn't miss while visiting your province ?

We're only able to be out there 9 days. Thus far, we have a few days planned for St. John's, then we'll make our way up to Deer Lake (making stops along the way perhaps in Trinity, then in Gander).

Thanks for any help !

And here I was tihnking I could help you w/the planning.
I've done the drive from Toronto - Newfoundland in the 8 last summer.

Things to do.. Hmmm...
Go to St.george street and check out a few of the bars. For those of you who don't know, the street has nothing but wall to wall bars. Every year they throw a street party and close off the ends of the street and have a HUGE party.

Other then that, go to Cabot tower at the top of signal hill. you must drive or take a taxi to the top as walking up from the main city will take a long time and be quite the workout. The view from the top is amazing and usually (if you go in the right season) you can watch the whales from there or see an iceburg or two floating past. Take binoculars w/you if you go up there. There are also walking trails around this whole area which are nice, but would take you about 3hrs to walk around. You can see them from the the top of the hill.
Did I mention that you can go up in the tower too and it's all free. Good spot for some pics.

Whale watching tours are fun too (The Scademia is one of the best boats for this). For about $20-30/person you get a 2hour boat ride out right beside the whales. Plus you can get screeched in on the boat.

When are you going down there?

One more tip: If you are driving, then be careful at night as there are lots of moose on the roads.

Thanks MyRx8Bad. We're going Jun 22nd - July 1st. Hopefully still a good time to see whales and icebergs.

Did you drive to St. John's ? How long did it take ?

I drove to North Sydney, took the boat to Argentia, and then headed out to Marystown (about 3hours from the boat) and then on our way back stopped off in St. Johns for a couple days.

Took us about 24hours to get the boat and then a 14hour boat ride (long and boring ) and then 3hours to relatives.

We broke the 24hours to the boat in North Sydney, NS into 2 days. 18hours the first day and then a nice 6 1/2 the second day and enjoyed the afternoon/evening at a nice B&B and then slept until the boat left at 6am the next morning.
It was nice to do it once, but it just eats up too much time of the vacation to do it again.
