I have a titanium one. 6MT-GT. I wouldn't mind chatting, however I am at work a good portion of my time. You can reach me at 975-9997. Didn't you go to Japan to get some accessories? If so do you have anything left? Give me a call, perhaps we can meet up sometime!

Bad news update:
He got a call from the dealers today.
They finished the prep, and were wheeling it out of their underground parking, up to the showroom, ready for my friend to come and pick it up.

The moron drove it into a concrete pillar in the garage, destroying the fender, hood, bumper.

They swore they could get it fixed up in under two weeks.
They offered no discount
Imagine dealer prep including "pre crashed"

My buddy just told them to stick it where the sun don't shine.

So, if anybody is looking at a yellow RX-8 at Weber motors in a couple of weeks, that's the one.
Buyer beware!

That silver 8 was me... I picked mine up in Manitoba the day they were delivered.

I was in at Park Mazda, they are new in Sherwood Park but seem very good, and they mentioned that mazda will be doing a buy back offer on all 8's because of the HP issue.

Any suggestions on getting more HP to get these up to the 300 + range?

Cool! I take it you live on the north side?

Want to do a run one of these days?

300HP?
You are talking either turbo or supercharger.
I am interested too, but only if it can be installed in a way that it can be taken back out cleanly for warranty purposes..

new to board

hi guys....never posted on a site like this, but a big fan of the 8......I can't believe though all the crying that is going on about the 9 less hp on other threads here?........god, a K& N filter will give you back 4-9hp......anyway, luv the car, and have a black GT on order for 2004......can't wait.......and with 230+hp, I think that is enough to keep me smiling, and pull away from ost cars on the road........looking forward to what K & N will come out with....but for me, the filter is all I usually go with............I test drove a 350z before the purchase.......a little more torque, but I think the 8 can keep up.........and the Z was terrible inside....looked very cheap, and drove like a Mustang (Hard ride)..........

It is a lot more than 9HP. Mazda is claiming that figure, but is already proven to be much more than that.
Mazda originally claimed 247 HP at the engine, then reduced the claim to 238HP

For some real info, instead of dumb *** opinions read the thread about dyno tests:
http://www.rx8forum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7863

Bottom line: The car is making about 20+ foot-lbs. of torque less than advertised, which translates into about 220HP at the engine, 27 less than claimed.
It should be putting down around 200 to 202HP at the wheels, if it was at 238 at the crank.

It is making around 175 to 180 HP at the wheels.

The 8 is a very nioce car to drive, and has a lot of power, but it is not in a class with a 350Z, Infiniti Q35 Coupe, or a Honda S2000.

As those cars cost from $6,000 to $8,000 more, I will be keeping my 8, and trying to find a way to get the power back.

The other area of contention is gas mileage.
For those who drive it fairly fast, it is not so great.
Most people, including me, are getting around 14liters/100kilometers. That is around 17mpg, based on US gallons.
All of the other cars mentioned get from 15% to 30% better mileage.

Dyno's

client of mine owns a shop, and Dyno's can vary huge depending on how the test is done..............I did a ton a reserach, and I know the 8 is not as fast as the 350z, but if you run it hard (no problem for a rotory), it can easily keep up to the G35........would be shocked if mazda came out again and lower hp rating.......found a website on another forum that published time slips......still 0-60 in 6secs, and mid 14's qtr mile..........sounds good to me

True, dynos can certainly vary.
Best runs I have seen got 183HP and worst around 170.
In ANY case it is still at least 20HP less than Mazda is now claiming after the reduction.

It is a great car, but do not expect blinding acceleration, and certainly not the same as a 350Z or Honda S2000.

But it is still a great car to drive, and performs really well on the highway.
I took a run to Fort MacMurray this weekend, with cruise control set to 160kmh. Made it to there in well under 3 hours driving time!

The time slips you mention were published by Mazda, with no outside verification. Others who have run it are getting around 15+

As Mazda are already proven liars, the timeslips the published mean little.
Bear in mind the car CAN make the power, but the ECU settings done at port when they were imported have reduced the power.
If Mazda did the runs with Japan spec ECU settings it is easy to get mid 14's.

Personally I do not expect to be drag racing my 8, but it is disappointing to find out we got shafted on the output figures claimed.
If you are mainly concerned with performance, get a Subaru WRX STi, or a Mitsubishi EVO. They are FAST!

If you want a nice all-round car, the RX-8 is a dandy!

Maybe we can get the power back. That is my hope.

Dyno's

I have been to the 350z thread, the G35 etc.....all the same BS..........Dyno tests showing not the hp rating, or anywhere close.....and people crying out.............those cars you mentioned are faster no doubt, but I ran my test drive hard and have no doubt this thing will do 60mph in 6secs......but your right, the z, Mitsubishi etc are faster, but do not pat too much attention most info about Dyno's.........alot of Dyno's done on the Z showed 225-240hp?.........no the 287...........so I take it with a grain of salt...............I have owned a 200hp prelude, currently the turbo Jetta until the 8 arrives.......but sure the 8 will blow them both away.............

Generally speaking, on a rear wheel drive car, with 2 wheel drive, the power loss from the engine to the wheels is around 15% to 17%

The 350Z is claimed at 287HP and dynos at the wheels around 240. That is 16.4% loss

The RX-8 is claimed to be 238HP.
It dynos around 170 to 185.
At the lower figure this is 28.6% and on the best figure 22.2%

As the 8 has a very efficient drivetrain, with few parasitic losses , anything over 16% is strictly bullshit by Mazda.
Things that reduce the power include drivetrain weight, and the RX-8 has a carbon fibre re-inforced composite lightweight driveshaft ( as does the 350Z) and the RX-8 does not drive the power steering from the engine by belt, instead it uses an electric motor to drive the pump.

IF the engine made 238HP we should be seeing at least 200HP on a dyno.

The Honda S2000 has a claimed HP of 240 at the engine, and typically dynos at around 220, so we see that, if anything, Honda have been conservative about the power.

I used to own a Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V. Initially Nissan claimed 185, then droped the claim to 180HP.

That was bullshit, as it dyno'ed at around 143-145, which is around 19.5%.
Fortunately the intake was a huge power sucker, and simply changing that to a big K&N in a cold air box brought me up to 162HP, which is 10% less than the claimed. Unfortunately after that, header and exhaust, and a few other parts it made 190+ at the wheels.
Why unfortunately?
It is front wheel drive, and started to wheel hop like crazy. It also started to torque twist the chassis when you punched it hard. The car simply was not designed for 190HP and 195 ft/lbs of torque.

Pity, as it was a fun car. But still, not nearly as nice as the RX-8!

Actually it's between 190 to 205'ish rwhp stock. No such thing as 220 rwhp.

Where in Manitoba did you get it - Steinbach? Had you read this thread that I posted in July?

HP

come on?...this whole HP thing is really starting to be quite funny..............Mazda would not risk being wrong again about thse numbers....it amazes me how the negative things can be so exaggeratted on the internet or focused on...........the 8 is still a fast car with smooth power.......I like to compare it to the 350Z.........this is a car that has 287hp (right, maybe?), and does 0-60 in 5.6sec.......the 8 can do it in 6sec with a much better quality ride........god, I can't believe some people are that disappointed or upset about this car?........it makes me laugh..........a whole 9hp.....big deal......please don't give me the Dyno thing........experienced guys will tell you that there is so much variance in there, they can be taken with a grain of salt........and the test numbers will not change with 9 less hp....it is torque conversion that matters.........I am not experienced with this, but many friends and a few clients that work in the field that are, and they chuckle when I tell them some stories from here.......the thing still has a ton of power for such a light car....the European numbers for the independant test drives all where showing the revised HP figures, and they came up with some impressive numbers..............as far as cost......the lexus IS, Bmw 330, TSX, S2000 (a friend has one)...........the 8 fits somewher in there, and can outperform most, except the s2000, depending on which magazine you read.......I have driven and been in the s2000, and the 8 is just as fast if not faster........I think road and track or car and driver even had better numbers for the 8 over the honda......anyway, with the smooth power of the 8, it can be deceiving how fast you 0-60 comes and goes....................are there faster cars out there....for sure.....but the 8 is a quality machine capable of some good performance numbers................

Why don't we just set up an "Edmonton" meeting?

Two of the various contributing factors that I'm throwing in are the weight and whp of both cars.

Driven by the same driver, you are saying that a car with more whp and less wt is slower than a car with less whp and more wt?
