ON Oil Change and Filter

I was trying to save some coin by doing the oil change myself, but I am new to this... I have a hard time taking the oil filter off, it too tight. Anyone have some ideas and do you relly have to change the oil fiilter every time. Also I drained all of the old oil, but intead of only filling 3 liters of 5W20 conventional oil I kind filled it to the top at least 4 L, would that be a problem?

Help will be appreciated.

Changing the filter every times depends on the milage between changes. But I personally wouldn't cheap out on a oil filter. What were you using to remove the old filter, your hands? The toll below with an socket extension works well with the RX-8.

Ok you replaced 4L of oil to bring to full mark or you just added more than needed? I.E. 4L instead of 3L.
Simple answer always change the filter, it is not worth the effort to do your oil and not the filter. Besides there will be dirty oil in the filter that contaminates the fresh oil.
Buy a new filter and match up a wrench to fit.

Thanks guys!

Hope it will be ok to drive for bit just to go to Canadian tire and look for this wrench and socket to take the old filter out. I was actually trying with my hands.

A regular oil filter wrench will work as well. I like the fram filters with the grippy material on it, no need for a wrench. I run 5W20 full synthetic.

I got it off with a black plastic socket from canadian tire and attached a ratchet wrench with long attachment, worked great.

Since I don't know much about cars and a new owner for RX8. I have been reading many threads about what type of oil to use. Most of them said a big no to synthetic. 5W20 if you experience cold wheather temperatures and 5w30 for normal temperature. Decided to give it a try on the 5w20 conventional.

Check out the SOHN OMP adaptor. If you install it you can definitely use synthetic oil and heavier oil will be alright too. Their is considerable discussion on this forum and on my thread below in my signature about OMP adaptors. Where to get one, how to install it and why you should are just part of the discussion in my thread.

We all start somewhere, welcome noob, this is a great forum, keep reading!!
