OFFICIAL 2012 Summer cruise

On Saturday morning, check this page at 0900. If the weather is looking extremely bad, I will force postpone the cruise. We will still if it is just misting or drizzling, that's how we did it last time. The reason is... because we're going so far, what the weather is like here is not indicative of what the weather is up there!!!

Date: Saturday, July 7, 2012

Last update: July 3, 2012. People seem to be happy with the bbq/grilled meats at Chako, great for summertime! If there are severe objections, please advise on an alternate dinner location.

*We will change the route next year, instead of Gravenhurst, will head west towards Parry Sound direction, there are some nice roads there through Bala as well. but due to popular demand, this route stays the same this year with minor adjustments most notably the first hour of the cruise start heading up to Simcoe.*

The cruise is 3 parts.
PART A) Scenic tour around lake simcoe stopping at Washago.
PART B) Actual Southwood Rd. 13 twisties to Gravenhurst
PART C) Gravenhurst back to Richmond Hill for dinner

Itinerary as follows:

10:30am to 11:30am : Brunch @ Tim Hortons (Valleymede & Hwy 7, southeast corner) Click for map. Entrance to plaza is located on Times Ave south side of Hwy 7. Park at far east side of parking lot. This will be our starting point.

11:30am to 12:00pm : For those that want to come later, show up between 11:30 and 12 noon for meet/greet/driver's meeting in parking lot. I will go over the map, some basic rules, call signs/signalling practices etc... Here is your chance to get gas across the street at Shell and go to the bathroom.

12:00pm: Roll out to Washago taking the scenic route there... Because it's scenic, it'll be about 2 - 2.5 hours long.
Map and directions: Richmond Hill to Washago

We will be stopping at Washago for a quick 10 minute bathroom break, snack, juice whatever you want before doing Southwood Rd. The stop point is a little restaurant in Washago.

2:30pm: Southwood twisties passing through Torrance then east to Gravenhurst. We will be stopping at Gravenhurst to take a 20 minute break, stretch your legs, talk about the drive etc...
Map link: Washago to Gravenhurst

Afterwards, we will drive through Gravenhurst downtown to a Sunoco gas station to fill up for the drive back home.
Map Link: Sunoco gas station

4:00pm - Leave Gravenhurst, return to Richmond Hill for CHAKO BBQ for some Korean grilled dinner, arrive around 5:45pm
Map link: Gravenhurst to CHAKO BBQ

CHAKO is all you can eat, flat pricing.

Particulars

1) I will be the lead car and I will have a walkie talkie. The volunteer who is at the back will hold the other walkie talkie. The back person's job is to notify the lead car that he/she has fallen way too far behind due to traffic/congestion/lights/accident etc... so that the lead car will slow down/stop the cruise and wait.

Always follow the lead car! If I come to a stop on the side of the road, you should stop as well. If another car pulls to the side without four-way flashers on, continue to pass, this is for the person that's pulling to the side perhaps you want to take photos of passing cars or to simply go to the back of the line or something.

2) If you have an emergency, put your four way flashers on and pull to the side.

3) Everyone, if you see the car in front OR behind you with four way flashers on, put your four-way flashers on and also pull to the side.

4) Rule 2 and 3 combined will create a ripple effect and notify the entire cruise from front to back that there is something that needs urgent attention and we come to a stop for that. Remember if you are just coming to the side because you want to take photos or move to behind someone else for filming purposes etc... just pull to the side with any other signal OTHER THAN four-way flashers

5) Have fun! and stay safe!

1 tank is more than sufficient. You'll go through about 1/2 tank when it's all done.

Yeah I had plenty of gas after this run.

I'm looking forward to tackling southwood road without all the rain we had last year!

Fact of the matter is.. there are no good driving roads anywhere around GTA... Southwood rd 13 is the closest thing to the Tail of the Dragon that is the closest to Toronto area you can find in twists and in length of road.

You'll be impressed by that road if you come.

Y'all know I'm down for this! Just hope something doesn't interfere, cuz this cruise is the ****. By the way, the last rainy cruise was actually perfect, it turned to fog, and the corners were so nice, it was just awesome trust me!!

A few notes on the information so far, going off memories of the last one:

- Is the Washago route explicitly avoiding Rama rd after hwy12? I will assuredly point out: the construction there is entirely completed, we can all drive on that road with confidence!

- We had some trouble losing people right out the door, with those left turns on Valleymede / hwy7 / Leslie st. Would we be better to turn right onto Valleymede, take the residentials up to 16th or even Major Mac? At least up there the traffic will have thinned, meaning we can do a pullover a bit more easily.

- Maybe we should identify some checkpoints for pullovers, so that we all know in advance where we will stop in case of group splits? I know it's hazardous and all, but we can't get away from it if we're trying to stay together. We should at least plan a few strategic ones, like where we are turning off a major route.

Other remarks:

- There is one bad railroad crossing, near the end of Southwood rd. It's crossable, we just have to take our time. Sorry in advance, if it's too brutal for you Mike. :P But honestly, these are northern roads, some of them are bound to be rough in random places. You gotta just take the hit on this drive!

- Remember to bring walkie-talkies. They are indispensable on this drive. I've got like five myself, but we need more than that. Maybe we should have a "big cruise check-list" for everyone to use, just before departing?

Yes, working on all those points:

- More right turns than left to keep pack together
- Designated washroom stops
- I have 2 walkie talkies. Person at the back will carry the other one. I will be lead car as usual.

Last time, I printed copies of the entire route map and handed out to people at the beginning. Those who "got lost" really just never bothered to read the map I printed to see where we were going.... *shakes head*

To those that are going to the Cayuga event that mike posted about and have signed up here as well. Please make your decision now on which event you are going. Do not make it last minute. If you make it last minute you are one of the reasons why the 8 club lacks unity and club events. Put yourself in the shoe of the organizer n see how it is like when people say they are going and they don't show up on the day of due to your pathetic selfish reasoning.
