NO!!! First snow of the year in Calgary!

So coming back from hockey, I find that it's slushy and snowing and my 8 is covered! Worst part is that I've got summer tires on still. I'll tell you, that was a scary drive! This has gotten me all paranoid, so I'm probably swapping to winters tomorrow. Anybody else swap this early?

LOL! This isn't early, it's LATE! For the past 2 years, I had the winter tires on by Oct 15th - and needed them (snow) before Oct 30. This year, I've put it off so far. I was out tonight, drove my son to the public library, then went to Rona. Came out, saw that the drizzle had changed to snow, called my son and told him I was going home to change cars! It was juuuuuust starting to get slushy as I got near to Edgemont, but I made it home OK. 10 minutes later, I would have been screwed (ie park it and call a taxi - once it would have got slippery , no way would I have kept driving)! So I just finished putting the winter tires on my wife's car (Audi, which had all-seasons on it, so it got around OK in tonight's snow), and will do the RX-8 winter tires in the morning.

Yep, I was also at the game, and had a fun time driving home last night. DSC is my friend!

I'll wait a few more days to see if this stuff is going to hang around. Last year I switched to winter tires too early, so I'd like to wait as long as possible.

I just got back from vacation in Acapulco so I haven;t had time to change my tires over. IT was an interesting drive to work today. I actually thought the summer tires did a better job than I expected.

I'll be switching them out tomorrow.

Do you drive an RX-8? Have you ever tried to drive with the stock summer tires on snow?

Canadians are certainly not afraid of snow - hell, we spend 6 months every year driving on it (well, except for Canadians from Vancouver - they ARE afraid of snow ). The problem is that summer high performance tires, including those that come standard on the RX-8, are completely useless and dangerous in winter conditions of cold, snow, slush, and ice. There's plenty of RX-8 owners who have tried to drive their cars in those conditions and either got stuck or, worse, crashed.

With proper winter tires, an RX-8 does just fine in winter conditions. We're talking about whether we've changed our cars to the winter tires yet. A search of this forum section for the keywords "winter tire" will turn up dozens of threads, going back over two years, about this subject.

Regards,
Gordon

Luckily I changed mine last Saturday. I knew it was coming, I remember the first time I got stuck with summer tires on after a sudden dump of snow... I couldn't move, I was ready to sell the car.. Hated it. But with some good Winter / Ice Tires, she runs great. No problems this morning, just watching everyone else panic and try to remember how to "winter drive" Saw a new mustang try to boot it and spun out, smashing his rear on the cement barrier... boy I bet he wished he was more careful. ...

Still nice.....

It's still very nice up here in Northern Alberta - Sunday we had a great Auto-X at Namao airbase, all on summer rubber!

This time I lost to a Subaru because it had "R" compounds on, NOT because it was 4x4; that's my excuse-du-jour and I'm sticking with it!!

(Do-do is probably referring to his famous uphill snow video (
Link.... )
he is not TOO afraid of snow!)

Boy, and I was starting to feel dumb when I had them put the winters on when I got my 8 last week! Had to drive home from Discovery Ridge on the west side to Chaparral in the south at about the time you guys were leaving the game. Handled great though! I was concerned when I bought it about this, as I've never driven RWD in the winter before. No probs! I mean sure, you can turn the rear end into a fish if you goose it, and I was getting passed constantly by soccer moms in their SUV's, but I was holding track, even at 80km/h.

Heh .. last year I didn't swap until late Nov. Guess we were lucky last year. But yea, time to bust out the torque wrench.

Ahhh ... good to see the ol' Rotten vs KHTM again.
