New Federal budget introduces gas guzzler tax

The new Federal budget announced today proposes a $1000-4000 gas guzzler tax for cars with mileage higher than 13L/100km, excluding pickup trucks. At the same time, fuel efficient cars including Civic, Corolla and Mini Cooper manual are getting a rebate. Of course it's all just talk at this point since we are going into another federal election this fall.

What are the some of the proposed details? Is it just on newly purchased cars or an ongoing yearly tax?

The RX8 gets 12.8 L/100km in city.. So it just squeaks by.

Since the brain-dead Bloc is voting for the budget it seems unlikely that we'll have an election any time soon. Seems that the Bloc is good for something other then just trying to break up this wonderful country. I suspect they are only voting for the budget because they don't think they will win as many seats if an election were held this spring.

Isn't there a new way to measure the mileage. They're going to post numbers closer to 'real world' mileage instead of mileage under optimum conditions.

I think that it's a purchase time tax, not annual.

Funny that the Bloc is holding together the Federal government! Talk about ironic. Obviously a case of self interest.

Of course the Bloc is voting out of self-interest. This budget practically gives Quebec another $3-4 billion in transfer payments a year. I don't know about you all, but I'm rather sick of this so-called "fiscal imbalance"...
