Mosport

Went down to Mosport yesterday with Kensai Racing... The RX8 felt great!! 1st time I took the 8 down, it felt a bit under power but it handles amazing.

First session it was still wet so I was drifting every turn cuz the RA1s still had no traction. When the track dried up later on I pushed it a bit harder but CEL came on cuz of the stupid Gas Cap...

The MAZDASPEED coilover also felt good on the track, I'm just hoping the weather gets a bit hotter next time I go on so I can really test out the car!

If possible, we should gather a few more 8s and maybe FDs and go down together when Kensai has another event.

Cheers

Weather is always a problem with these events.

I hope there will be a few more track days... the season has just begun!

Was there any instruction in the Kensai lapping day?
I am thinking of doing Mosport towards the end of the season, once I get more experience.

I just came back from Mosport today. I did the Ian Law school. Excellent! An hour of instruction an hour on the track and so forth. Followed pace car to begin with and then instructors for the rest of the day. Got up to some pretty decent speed in spite of being a newby.
We ran on the Bridgestone track next to the big track.....still amazing fun!!

If you request they will have a instructor sitting with you for a few sessions and maybe even drive your car for a session to see the limit of your ride and go from there!

Sounds like this was a pretty good time also. Glad to see more 8 owners enjoying their rides on the track (not just the on-ramp).

Hahaha... well I used to track my STi almost every mth at Mosport, this is the first time with the 8 and I loved it!!

I only have the MSPD Intake and Exhaust but the sound of the rotary was just amazing!! Even tho it might seem a bit under power at the back straight, but I'm sure it's just me not used to the car, and it has a lot more potential!!

Sorry to have missed it. I had heard about it but could not get away to attend. I'm hoping to be able to do the May event (I think it is in May).
I really like Mosport and have always had a really good time there?
I hate the CEL light coming on too!!! How did you know it was the gas cap?

STi? Curious how they would stack up? I have an awd talon that despite being the same weight, and has at least 100HP advantage is nowhere near as fun as the 8 when the road gets twisty. Although I do have more fun in the rain/snow with awd. And the chronic understeer of the FF awd setup does make it feel safer.

One thing I noticed in your SIG was the staggered setup? I just don't understand why you would stagger a car with such little HP/TORQUE. This would invite understeer like crazy, wouldn't it?

I plan on going 245/40's all around on 8.5" wide 18" wheels. The layout is FM with almost 50-50 distribution. The engineers selected symmetrical tire sizes for a reason.

Was the back straight uphill frustratingly slow? Mosport just seems like too big a track for the 8. That being said - I still want to run it!

Yup you are absolutely right, the car does understeers but that's the fun about it!! lol

The car isn't all that slow at the backstraight, tho it is underpower but the most fun about the 8 on Mosport is the corners!!

I concur. Had the chance a few years back to run with the Trillium BMW club and had a Viper on streets in our group. I had R-compounds and it was not a fun time down the back straight. All I saw was his tail lights getting smaller, but when it came to the corners, they weren't getting smaller anymore....by the time we got back to turn 5, I was there with him, lap after lap .
This also says a lot about tires too (R's vs streets).

On the day when I was there, I really wished I had street tires tho.. like a set of
T1Rs or something, cuz it was really wet and cold, I couldn't get the RA1s to warm up until later on...

Again, the 8 gave me a lota fun on the track, and sometimes it's not all about the power, tho it'd be nice!! lol

R-Compound Tires for Track Days.

Question - How do you get the wheels to the track? Support vehicle, or do you just drive to the track?

I don't like putting wheels in the back seat for obvious reasons.

My truck has a stereo - so rules out that.

Curious.

I'm running RA1s on the street as well. I don't drive my car much, only on Sunny days and to the track.
