missing kafka's posts about motorsports

So, i guess with josh gone and the winter rolling in, you all think that its okay to stop talking about motorsports until the white stuff melts. well its not. i miss reading kafkas posts about his weekends involving motorsports. so to fill the void, ill talk about mine. I dont have pics yet (they are all on my friends cam) but i have some vids to fill the void until i get them.

so, the event i went to was the 2008 Rally of the Tall pines in bancroft ontario. Booked nov 22nd off 2 months ago. this was the first saturday ive had off for 3 months.

Woke up at 4 30am on saturday (22nd). got some chairs, lots and lots of warm clothing and some drinks. threw it all in the car and headed out. Got quite a ways from home and realized the one thing i forgot was my winter jacket, and with the weather network claiming a potential low of -16 up there, i wasnt gonna chance it. turned around. got the jakcet, back on the road. now its 530am. drove to bancroft (estimated 4 hr drive) in 3 hrs flat.

got to rally HQ to see the cars prepairing for the ceremonial start. very cool. i was suprised to see there was an 82 RX7 in amongst all the subarus, Mitsus and VWs.

after a walk around all the cars we decided to head to the iron bridge spectator stage and set up camp. we arrived, picked our spot and chilled (litterally) until the firts cars showed up. we were greated by the 00 car, a subaru SVX. then the 0 car, an 08 mitsu outlander. for those that dont know, the 00 and 0 cars drive the entire rally 10 and 5 mins (respectively) infront of the field with sirens on their cars to warn everyone that the cars will be coming. i beleive its also to ensure the roads are cleared and also to make sure the timing equipment is working properly.

after 5 mins, we were greated by this

this was patric richard in his 09 Sti subaru canada rally car. as you can see he was flat out pushing as hard as he could. he had already wrapped up the season before this rally, but he hadn't won this event before and with this his first season after coming out of retirement im sure he just wanted another victory more than anything. you cant see it cause my camera is a peice of crap, but he clipped a post with a pilon on it when he went wide on that turn, it ripped his bumper off and you can see him dragging it behind the car before he enters the next turn.

There were alot of offs and breaks on the early stages so the order was all mixed up. i missed filiming Andre Comrie Picards Evo X. he almost lost it on the same corner as richard lost his bumper. Ken block made the trek up from the states to compete, but he had two offs on the first stage, completely totalling his suspension and was unable to go on. too bad, he always puts on a show for the spectators.

two other vids i think worth seeing, Réjean Losier's evo 5 with an anti lag system. for those that dont know how an anti lag works, it basically retards the timing all the way and makes the car run insansly rich when you let off the gas so ignite the fuel in the exhaust, thus creating a ton of pressure in the exhuast and thus keeping the turbo spooled. sort of a must with an AWD turbo car. you dont want to bog down every turn. its really hard on the turbo as you can imagine and heat is a big issue. anyways, heres a vid of the sound his car makes. most teams have this sort of setup, but his sounds the most aggresive.

another car worth noting is Peter K's 1991 suzuki swift GTi. I have a love for these cars. my first car was a 1990 suzuki switf GTi. this is a 1.3L twin cam 4 cylinder. front wheel drive car. so its in "group 2" basically stock engine. your allowed a liimited slip and suspension is completely open. you can do whatever you want, if you want to run stock suspension, or if you want to run top of the line coilovers, its up to you. anyways, this little machine managed an incredible 8th over all against a sea of 300+ hp AWD subarus with his little 101 bhp front wheel drive suzuki. very impresive indeed.

as you can see, the car doenst accelerate on the straight really at all, but he carries so much speed throught he turns. its all driver skill in a car like that.

after the first three run throughs of that stage, me and my friend packed up our stuff and went back to rally HQ for the lunch service, hoping to meet up with a friend of mine from alberta that is here rallying. well, his car was nowhere in sight and the team was scattered everywhere. they looked very busy, so i didnt want to bother him. turns out, they left the road and fell down a 50 Ft drop off. it took 4 full size trucks to get the car back on the road. driver and codriver (my friend) were not injured at all, and the car started and limped back to service and into the trailer. the really bad part is, they had already won their class for the season this rally was just for fun. oh well, they have until februaru to get the car back togther for the next major rally.

we wondered around the service, i checked out he RX7 that was there. thing running like a top in the freezing cold. sounding like he had an extend port or soemthing going on with it. it sounded really mean. i have a vid of that car too.

I stayed for the night stages as well. it got friggin cold. around -15C. the night spectator stage was actually on someones private property. They carved a rally cross course out, put up grand stands, barriers, and lights. that stage was 1.88km long, and a small part the cars were out of sight. that was cool becaues you could see the cars do a bunch of turns and they had their light pods on, which were blinding. They took more risks as well. lots of sliding around.most of the finishing order had been determinded by that time of the night and there were no trees or anything to wreck to car on for half the track so it was mostly for the fans to enjoy. pat richard was especially entertaining. sliding like crazy. seamus burke was also really slide happy. my camera corrupeted all the night vids unfortunatly, but again Réjean Losier's evo 5 impressed in the dark. his missfire/antilag system made for some very nice light shows. 3 foot flames shooting from his tailpipe whenever he let off the gas (on the first run anyways, he turned off the antilag for the second run. I supose to conserve the engine/turbo for next season).

All in all, this is the event i look forward to most every year. I highly suggest anyone that has an interest in motorsports check this out. Two things though, dont bring your RX8 and dress WARM! The parking area is somebodys field that isnt plowed. if ever you were to get stuck it would be there. last year, the snow was up over the axle nuts on my lancer. luckly there are plenty of happy and friendly pepole willing to push you out and an abundance of subarus to tow you out if need be. however, if your 8 floods, you are hours away from a shop and theres not enough traction anywhere to pull start it safely. I drove up in my friends VW jetta this year. plus, 800km round trip, filling up three times isnt my idea of fun. lol. the jetta gets more than 600km/tank (which is pretty much the same size as our tank) so it was a delight to fill it up. haha

anyways, just thought i'd share my exciting weekend with you guys. good pics to follow when i get them. also, if you are interested, TSN is coverign the season of rally, first show airs today (nov 23 @ 230pm).
