I talked with CS at Mazda Canada today. He said I should be receiving my letter this week due to the fact I'm not that far away from the office. Don't know if it's Canada Post or Purolator. I believe the deadline is October 1.

Thunder, denial or not I'll buy your accessories from you if you don't mind.

At least the rotary crest and the fog light! And maybe the clear indicators. Oh and maybe the stearing wheel after I see pics and the shift **** sounds cool!

Mazda Canada told me the *hope* to be mailing the letters today.
I do not know if we have the same deadline, for certain.

Wow, there are a lot of people jumping ship here over a little less horsepower than spec. Most of you seemed to love the car until someone put a Dyno in your face telling you it was underpowered!

I for one think Mazda is being accomodating with this offer, and wouldn't give my 8 back for all the Tea in China because I am so in love with it.

It's fast, gorgeous, innovative....and just fun as hell to drive around in.

LONG LIVE THE RX-8!

Why don't people understand that we can still love the car and NOT LOVE what MAZDA did to us.

Think it's easy to have the car bought back-- NO.
Did I get what I paid for -- NO.
Am I pleased with the way Mazda is handling evidence that the car is WAY UNDER SPEC -- NO
Do I trust Mazda anymore -- NOT Entirely
Do I want another Mazda product-- NOT yet

Love is a fickle thing....and breaking up is hard to do.

Edited to update today's feelings on the issue. *

* Post details may change at any time

Thunder, out of curiousity, what is the exact reason you want to give the car back? Do you find it slow, or are you just unhappy that the numbers don't line up to spec?

Further...to your points above:

Think it's easy to have the car bought back-- NO.
-->You can certainly "think" it is not easy, but not entirely fair to judge Mazda on this until you have tried going through the motions.

Did I get what I paid for -- NO.
-->Definitely an individual opinion, as I'm sure many people didn't pay with only horsepower in mind. I'm not thrilled that the spec is off, but the "utility" I get out of driving the car covers my financial costs, so I think many would feel they did get what they pay for.

Am I pleased with the way Mazda is handling evidence that the car is WAY UNDER SPEC -- NO
-->Mazda Canada hasn't exactly had a lot of time to even formulate a response or game plan, given that this issue has only come up recently. So far they have offered to buy back the car and refund your accessories (granted, the aftermarket ones could be difficult), or give you cash and/or free service. What *should* they do? Hand out $10K to all 500 owners?

Do I trust Mazda anymore -- NO
-->While trust is anotherr personal thing, this incident does not seem to be intentional or pre-meditated, as they are now dispersing cash and free service to a lot of people, which equals financial losses.

Do I want another Mazda product-- NO
-->Aside from the horsepower spec being wrong, is there a problem with the quality, or overall drive of the car?

This is meant as friendly debate only, I certainly don't want to attack anyone...I just want to ensure people are looking at this from the right angle, as incidents like this lend to people gathering in groups like this and making an issue into something bigger than it actually is.

Here's How I see the "Right Angle"

The car lacks kick.
There is no way its getting the claimed mileage.
I thought it was a break in issue
Proof of being WAY BELOW SPEC began appearing on this board
MAZDA offers buy back, admitting that they sold us something that they CANT DELIVER without any decent explanation or evidence.
I take it the offer. *
End of story.

Right for me. Not right for you. OK.

Do you think I'm going to enjoy giving this car back? NO
Am I going to do what I think is the right thing? YES
As for the general satisfaction with everything else questions--- THAT IS NOT THE POINT. AND ITS NOT ONLY ABOUT THE 9 hp (or should I say about 25 hp) . Its not about buyers remorse. Its not about needing the money back. Its about believing in something (NEW ROTARY SPORTS CAR FROM MAZDA), learning about it['s history, the design, the whole friggin thing (BTW I had that PRESS KIT BOOK laser printed for $100 and obsessed over that for a few months). Its about $2000 deposit sight unseen, buying the car essentially with faith that Mazda would deliver all that they had promised and they didn't. ON A 50 grand purchase....with no explanation. UNACCEPTABLE.

I had faith in Mazda, and they blew it.

edited for clairty

How do you know it lacks kick? All the reviews before release mentioned it wasn't very torquey. Yes, Mazda has revised the rated hp numbers, but they haven't revised the performance numbers. They insist that the cars will still hit the same 0-60 and 1/4 mile numbers that they did before the ECUs were reflashed. So has it lost any real performance? NO.

My car did get close to the claimed mileage on my 6600 km road trip. No problem.

Regards,
Gordon

Gord

I said "It lacks kick". Mazda agress with me. The DYNOs agree with me too.

I mean, how many times do I gotta say it? Read my posts. I don't think I can explain it any better than I have.

Haven't revised the performance numbers because they are LEGALLY MEANINGLESS. Are they admitting that they reflashed the ECUs now, cause I've only read that and Mazda canada wont confirm it.

Has it lost performance.....yes in HP and in PR. This car is not as worth as much when I bought it (not depreciation) and I want my money back.

I understand why you want to keep the car. I don't. Not what I paid for. Simple. <edit not so simple...>

Your car is broken in after your trip. Could you please go to a drag strip and do about 10 runs and post your best please? I'll be VERY SURPRISED if you come anywhere close to the 14.4-14.5 1/4 mile.

I'd be very surprised if anyone on this forum can produce the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times that those professional drivers produce, even with the old ECUs. And that goes for any of the cars that they review, not just the 8... it's simply not a fair comparison. I'll wait until C&D retests the car, none of the crap with forum members that: A.) don't know how to get the absolutely best out of the car, and B.) are not willing to push their car to the limit to see what their car can really do. Personally I'll admit to both.

And who cares anyhow!

I wouldn't have bought this car if I was intrested in straight line performance numbers. There are a lot of less expensive cars that can post much better times if that is what you are looking for! If you are really hung up on those numbers, you really are looking at the wrong car or you just don't get it!!!

Cool Keeper.....

Giving it back is not an option....I am getting the free stuff.

This car is a Keeper!

They can have it back when they pry it from my cold (very cold!) dead hands!

I agree.. but I'm still curious to see a dyno and maybe some 1/4 mile times from a Canadian car to see if they are the same as the US cars. The big mags will be testing the US versions of course.

Btw Bill if YOU are unwilling to push the car then I'll be perfectly willing to do it for you. Hehe.. :p

Game plan?? Mazda knew about this from day one!! They screwed us over BIG-TIME!! Mazda is trying to squirm their way out of this disasterous situation. They owe us a lot more!

Hey Jarek!

If I ever decide to destroy my ride to get the best possible 1/4 times you will be the first I'll call. :D :D :D

That's because I don't have the heart to do it. BTW... don't hold your breath.

How can they owe you a lot more than refunding your purchase or paying you cash and scheduled service?

What is "a lot more"? Seriously....would you expect any automotive manufacturer to just pay out 5, 10...15K to owners just because the horsepower and the fuel economy were off spec?

Some of you lot make me laugh...always expecting a handout.

If you don't like the car, take it back, so we can get back to having a forum where people who love this car can continue meaningful discussions.

A "lot more" equals approx. $2000. Let Mazda pay the price for pulling a stunt like this. I just want what I paid for!! You are still on your post-purchase honeymoon. Wake up and realize you were ripped off just like the rest of us!!
