Jack stands one side at a time. Is it safe?

Jack stands one side at a time. Is it safe?
I am planning to buy one of those jack stand /hydraulic jack kits from Canadian Tire.
Say I am only lifting the front end of the car. Is it safe to use the hydraulic jack on one side; put the jack stand; release the hydraulic jack and go to the other side and repeat?
Or should I use the hydraulic jack on one side, and use the spare-tire jack that came with the car on the other and try to do both of the jack stands at once?

Yes, jack one side, then place jackstand, jack other side, then second jackstand.
I like to lift just enough to place the stand on it's lowest level, then do the other side the same - then if you need more height, raise the jackstands the same way, two or three inches each side at a time.
I just got a screamin deal on a jack at Canuck tire - 3 ton, SpeedLift, for $59, half off!
The SpeedLift feature lifts the jack about 8" at a stroke if it's not loaded, very useful.
