Thanks.
That's a pretty good price for 17" alloys and the Toyo tires (size 215/55-17, right?). What brand alloys, and have you read through the winter tire group buy threads from last fall to see what people were paying then?

Alloys will not be too light for winter - there's no such thing as too light, only too heavy!

I vote no on rustproofing - some of the oil/wax types are OK, but they require annual re-application. The Ziebart asphalt type of coating is not any good, IMHO.

I've picked up my car last night. Lack for a better line, "it felt GOOOOD" diving my new ride was painful, trying to keep her below 4000rpm and driving the speed limit on local streets. I can feel that she just wanted to fly and move and I was keeping her back.

Anyways, here are some things I noticed when i got her back home.

1) Rear lights have condensation
2) The steering wheel makes a funny rubbing noise when I turn (I believe it will go away in a day or two, but we'll see.)
3) The speedometer seems to me that it's gauging a speed that is faster than what I'm really travelling at, but there's no way of checking if that's right or not...is there?
4) The car had 12KM on it, but I was ok with that (put a clause in the contract that if should not exceed 15km, so they played by my rules.)

Minus that, I must say that Avante really treats their customers right. With a bottle of the bubbly, bottle of touch up paint, and a great wax job the did to the car I was a happy camper..er...driver.

So now I need to work in the car. 1000km to work her in...it's going to be tough, especially with the long weekend around the corner. Oh well. As I work the car in, I'm planning to have her tinted and 3Med, so I started a search for the best and cheapest price for it. If you are interested in a group rate, I've started a thread with the link below. If you know of a great place to do both or one of the two things I want to do for the car, please PM me or share on that thread. THANKS!

https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...threadid=24419

I will update what if any hiccups my car has as I drive her on her first 1000km. When I get time I will photograph her and my wife?s car in our 1 and a 1/2 garage width garage. Yup that's right one of those garages. Talk about precision driving. Thanks for all of the info and the answer to past and future questions to come.

Gord96BRG - The rims are a steel with silver coating, as for the tires the size wasn't specified by the person I talked to on the phone today, but till hopefully talk to someone more informed later on. As they tell me, they sell winter packages that includes rims, rubbers and installation at $1550 before taxes.

HiTMaNN - Since I'm working in the car people just look at me cause I'm driving at the speed limit :D

Congratulations on your new ride!

For some discussion on the speedo, check out this thread a few of us are carrying on. It also talks about the navigation system "backdoors" that have some interesting information:

Hey Hobbes,

Welcome to the Avante family, LOL! I just bought mine there too and was similarly impressed (the bubbly was a nice touch, wasn't it?) Maybe I'll bump into you at the service dept. one of these days.

I also inquired about their winter wheel packege.... They showed me a good set of Toyo snows mounted on a nice set of 17" alloys (I think they were 6-spokes) and the price they quoted was $1600 + tax, which seemed like a good deal to me. I don't know what make the rims were but they looked pretty sharp -- not as nice as the OEMs, but nothing to be embarassed about, either.

Enjoy your new ride! I sure am!

RE: The sqeaky steering wheel...that went away for me in about a week (I had it too)

RE: the 12km...could be how far the car was driven from the rail yard to the truck, possible test drive.

RE: the break in period, I personally ignored it, as I think the break in is a lot of hoopla. This is the third car I've owned from new and not bothered with that malarchy. I'm sure a wrench head will comment that I'm out of my mind, and list reasons why it's important...but these engines are tested, tested, tested and put under the worst conditions....and if you're shortening the life, it's likely going to be the life after you own it anyway

Enjoy your 8.

They are one and the same....if the temperature outside is cold, the car is cold, it needs to warm up fully and burn off the rich fuel mix before you can shut it off.

In the summer when it is 80-90 degrees out, the car doesn't usually engage the choke program to warm it up, thus the problem isn't as prevalent. I thought the cold start issue was a non-issue until I was driving in late October and didn't let it fully warm up.

Bottom line here kids, is try and avoid the quick start and move the car type situations when the temperature outside is cool/cold and the car hasn't been started in a few hours.

Smoker: The winter car wash at the shell station--that's a good idea, where was my head. As for the security for the car. I thought about what you said and agree that deterant is the best thing to do. I also thought about the fact that so many people stare at the car that, well, who would steal when people are looking :P. BTW My first admire of the car was a 14yr ol kid who walked by when I was doing some work in the garage..it went something like this:

Kid: RX8. Niceeee.

Me: Thanks.

Nothing special, but it was kind of weird, I guess I will have to get used to it. My neighbour on the other hand, that was a funny one. He was backing out his car and started reversing as he usually does on to the main road and kept on reversing to check out my car, but he was interrupt by the Lexus RX330 driver he almost hit, with a big long honk of the horn. Since it was on Good Friday where everyone was washing their car, everyone saw him and zoom, off he went with a little red flushed embrassment. That put a smile on my face.

Roxy: Perhaps they have a nicer place to sit at Avante for the 8 dirver (doubtful, but it doesn't hurt to speculate . The bottle booze was a nice touch, I just hope the service is great there. BTW who did you buy your car from? Mine saleman was Frank Metallo. Nice kid, he's only 20 year old, can you beleive that? Anyways he's nice fellow and does a good job. I kind of lucked out when i paid for my ride last week. Turned out the messed up the extended warrnty, I paid $1640 for the bumper to bumper. The actual cost is more like $18xxsomething. So they said aw heck you just made $200 plust on the car. I wasn't complaining, but sure wad shooked. Then again I did walk out the door the first time with the paper work and they forgot the get the deposit from me. Go figure. Anyway see ya the service seats.

Deep Blue: Glad to know that the steering wheel is one of those work em in deals. Did you have that condenstation build up in the rear lights? I found that kind of nerve racking. What's the shortest time beofore you shut the engine off. I'm having the flooding issue voice in the back of my head, and just want to know what is realistic time frame before a safe shutdown can be made. Thanks!

Tried something with the car this weekend, but felt spooked when I heard splashing sounds.

I needed to move the car out of the garage to put up some shelving units. So instead of starting up the car and let it waste gas to let it warm up. I stuck it N and let her roll onto the driveway. The spooky part was when I heard splashing sounds as I did this. After I finished my shelving project, I went for a 10 min ride with my wife so she could pick some things from the grocery shop and as a reward for myself. I just drove around the parking lot till she came out. As I did this I tested put the stereo system. It worked, louldly . Everything seemed fine when I drove back home.

This leads me to that age old question, when going down hill, sticking the car into N to save gas. A do or a don't? I picked up this habbit why back in the day when my father taught me how to drive.

Oil Quest: Which is the best oil for the car? Where can I buy it the cheapest? I'm thinking of Costco, CDN Tire, Walmart as the three
places that would have it at the lower cost.

Wax Quest: Best wax for the car? Cheapest place to buy it? I'm a old school Turtle wax guy myself, but I've been hearing thumbs up for the Mother's brand name. Just want to find the best thing for the new ride in my life :D

FYI: Rainaway is a great product for the windshield and driver, passenger and read windows to shed water off easily. RainX is good too, but I found Rainaway a bit cheaper in cost and works just as good.

Don't. Back in the days of carbureted engines, that might have helped - but the RX-8, and most fuel injected engines, do NOT inject ANY fuel when decelerating (foot completely off the throttle) in gear and with the engine turning over about 1500 rpm. In other words - leave it in gear, foot off the gas, while going down hill and the car burns NO gas. Take it out of gear and let it idle in N, and it's burning gas to keep the engine idling (and the Renesis is not efficient at idle anyway!).

PS - Oil, the lifeblood of an engine. Do you really want to use the cheapest for such a critical operating element? (no... ) Either buy a top quality name brand mineral oil like Castrol GTX, or use synthetic like Mobil1 or Castrol Syntec.

Regards,
Gordon

Gord96BRG: I heard the synthetic is a no no for the car. I want to use the best oil, but at the cheapest price for it :D that is why I'm thinking of comparing Costco. Walmart and CDN Tire here in the GTA. I know one think. Them Areoplan miles my wife likes to collect are going to be stacked on with oil and gas $ . Thanks for the rolling hill answer, I know it must of sounded stupid, but this is my first sprts car I ever owned. Sure feels like I'm learning about cars all over again, and with this engine, I'm basically am.

hobbes: I went to the Avante in Richmond Hill because I heard such great things about their service department... So far, so good, so I guess it was worth the drive from downtown!

I dealt with a guy named Ron Fine who really knew his way around the car and gave me excellent service (competitive price, too ) I shopped around before buying and was amazed at the level of ignorance among most of the people who sell these vehicles (one sales guy actually told me the RX-8 had a V6 under the hood, if you can believe that!!!)

It was important for me to get good service for the car (since it is somewhat of a "semi-exotic", after all) so when I found a place I was comfortable with, I just went ahead and did the deal. Ron was super-friendly and his level of expertise reassured me at every step of the way that I was making the right choice.

Now I know why Avante has such a good reputation. The people there deserve it!

Roxy: FYI, you can go to either Avante location as you please, there is no extra charge or anything to that nature. The Toronto location is brand new and the service bays are huge. I talked with some of the service guys and they are patience and insightful with their answers to my questions. BTW there is a Timmies close by to Toronto location :D .

I've been shopping for all important engine oil for the car and found that Canadian Tire is the only place that sells it at $3.99/L Quaker State. Walmart and Costco don't sell the grade we need. With that in mind, I wonder if any of you found better places to buy oil? Thanks!

Trunk Warmth

Has anyone of you experience the warm trunk? I drove my car home from work last night and went to get the 'ol breifcase from the trunk and discovered that the lining was warm to the touch. Is this normal?

Vibration at stoplight

I've noticed that when I'm waiting for the light to change, the car seems to virbrate quite a bit. Should I be worried?

Steering Wheel noise

After driving for almost a week, the noise is gone

Best clear coat car wax?
I'm a old school turtle guy, but if there is something better out there I would like to know.

I've created a thread for the quest of oil at a lowest cost, there's a link below if you're interested.

Best place to buy oil..at the lowest cost

hey hobbes,

yeah, the trunk gets REALLY warm, just as the cupholders and the rest of the transmission tunnel does. insulation is the only fix... the cupholders have a TSB fix for them, i'm not sure about what's happened with regards to the trunk.

if you're feeling vibration through the gear selector during idle it's perfectly normal, and anything short of a serious, noisy, coughing stutter i wouldn't sweat about (although with my 3 short experiences with RX-8's there wasn't ever much vibration to speak of).

the BEST polish (well, conditioner is probably more accurate) is this Zaino polymer car finish "enhancer" of some kind... seriously, the absolute best.

You can buy the Zaino stuff in Square One Mall, in The BarberShop (yes, hairstylists, I couldn't believe it at first, but one section of the shop sells diecast models and Zaino).

I've been driving my car for a littlw over a week now and gased up at 312km, not too shabby for 60% local 40% Highway travel. I've been noticing a lot of windnoise from the driver side window when I travel down the highway, is this normal, or should I get it checked out?

A pebble hit my windshield on the highway and I suffered a widshield chip! I can't believe it, in the second week of driving too. ARGH! Hope the dealership can fix ir or replace it. When I drove my golf I would be smaked by pebbles all the time and nothing. This is really dragging my day down. Right after I install my tints too. ARGH...
