I'm at approx. 59,000 kms and I've done the 48,000km service (the major one) approx. two months ago and the service manager said it was in good condition, nothing wrong with it.

First tank I used looked to consume approximately 1/4 tank per 80kms or so, based purely on observation of the gauge - I wasn't looking to perform any calculations at this time but was noting that, as mentioned everywhere about the RX-8, it was gulping down fuel like a frat boy with a keg.

A couple of tanks later, when I appeared to be getting better mileage and was maintaining higher gears more often, I stopped for gas after travelling 391.9km and filled up with 48.05L, hence the 12.26L/100km value.

ah ok...i thought u just achieved that value after that one trip cuz u said you went 120kms to work and got that mileage....

The only time I fill up after travelling 120kms if gas is cheap (relatively speaking of course)

 

Looking at the gauge to calculate "quarter" tanks is not accurate. The gauge is quite off.

You need to start counting from a full tank (without topping off after the pump stops) and reset your trip odo. Then when you fill up, use the values on your trip meter and the amount of L displayed on the pump to calculate your mileage. Again, without topping off.

 

I used the scanguage to calculate my average fuel usage. Keep in mind 555km is the "theoretical" mileage if I drove to the last drop. I always fill up 1.5 clicks so I get consistent readings. Today I averaged 11.8L/100km almost all city.

 

i dont know what guages some of you are using but i use my wallet and needles guage. im not even close to your 11.x or even 12.x per 100km. the emost i have done is 300km on 50 liters. thats driving normal.
(BTW, IDLING is killer on your gas, i know drive slow for 5mins at first and gained 40km on tank!!!!thats right....i used to do 260!)
anyway, i finally found a dealer which doesnt find it normal and will be going shortly.

 

It might be a problem, might also be a few other things.

I easily get 300 now. Usually 325, sometimes 350.

I just changed my spark plugs, they where really do and I'll be changing my air filter soon, its done.

Making sure your air filter is clean and ignition in order will also help with your mileage. Im hoping my will go up a little once Ive put in the filter. More air, leaner fuel should help.

When I stopped driving like a granny and running the car at 2000rpm in every gear I gained fuel mileage. I was getting about 310km driving like a granny and bogging the hell out of the car, I started shifting at just below 4000rpm and keeping the revs from 2500-2800, and now i get about 350ish everytime. And that 350 is when the light comes on btw.

 

I bought my 04 Rx-8 MT at the begining of Febuary this year and have got below average gas mileage ever since. I see that for the most part others are getting approx 350 or so on a tank. The most that i have yet to see on a tank is 260km. This is usually on 50 to 52 liters of 91 octane V-Power fuel.

I drive mostly city (90%), however i usually do not get stuck in traffic and cruise between 60 and 100 km/h depending on speed limit of the road. Most of my trips are very short as i only work 5 km from my home. From what i have seen there is not dramtic difference if i drive it hard or granny shift all the time (still 240-260 a tank). I was wondering if maybe the person that owned it before me didn't change plugs and coils or possible neglect the 48,000km service. My car just rolled over 51,000 km. Thanks for any input you guys may offer.

I highly doubt the seller would have paid the 400$ Mazda price on plugs before selling the car.

Gotta remember, most people out there arent ressourcefull or care about cars, they would have called the dealer and said "**** it".

 

Very true. I did also notice that when i got it the tires where on the wrong corners and the oil was on the low side, hopefully the person that owned it before me wasn't a complete idiot. As far as PCM flashes, can these have a effect on gas mileage if they were never done.

Its possible they might have leaned out the trims which should affect gas mileage.

 

are u guys kidding me? i kept seeing over 300km per tank from you guys but i had never gotten something like that even with premix. Last tank was my best but i got only 307 when the light just turned on. BTW, i redline every 15km trip and i think i do drive a bit hard.

 

Damn that is quite low, I redline once or twice, about every other day during the winter time. Don't really want to wreck my winter tires pushing them too hard. In general I'm in 6th at 60kmh+. I get 400+ on a tank in the winter. 91 octane Petro.

In summer, I redline quite a few times each trip, but again in 6th ASAP when I'm not redlining. Mileage varies a bit in summer, 370+ I'd say. 91 octane Petro.

I know I get worse mileage when I'm in Vancouver though. I don't remember exactly, but I'd say around 350+, with 94 octane Chevron.

 

Ya my mileage is the ***** for some reason. I haven't even got close to 300km yet, lowest i have saw was 200 or so. I am heading down to Saskatchewan to see the family this weekend so that should give me a good idea of what i get on 100% highway driving. I think the first leg i will try 110km/h and the second 130km/h or so.

 

I guess thats why ur getting a way better result. although i dont redline for each gear,i do shift at at least around 3500rpm. I usually redline it at 2nd gear and i will keep it around 6k+ rpm at 3rd for a bit, then shift up. I think idle really kills a lot gas cuz if i drive to school (about less than 10 km), i would warm it up twice a day within 20kms. actually, i dont have to drive to school, bus 72 will only take less than 15 mins to school. i might try not to drive to school this often and see what will happen to my gas mileage.

 

Im getting mine flashed this week with the latest update as I haven't had mine flashed since i've owned it yet... so I'm going to see if I can build on 350 per tank...

 

According to the Scanguage I averaged 10.5L/100km this morning. Averaged 11.5L/100km on my last full tank.

 

I did 12.3L/100km on my last tank.
