GI: engine cleaning meet
Hey guys, anyone interested in cleaning the inside of their engine with seafoam? Good opportunity for a meet? I will help organize if there is interest...

guys, i personally would advise against this. get your dealer to do this. a very important part of the procedure of cleaning out the engine is after its all done, using the mazda computer to go in and manually crank up the OMP from about 3 (at idle) all the way up to 60 and let it run like that for 15mins IIRC. That is very important and its not something you can do unless you have all the mazda compter system and software at your disposal. just my two cents.
can somebody else elaborate on this?

Greg, it seems like a lot of people have done this themselves without a hitch. What exactly is the risk? Engine damage?
If you have a cobb, can't really hook up to the computer, right?

basically with that engine cleaner you have flushed out every bit of lubrication in there (as well as any carbon buildup which is the point). cranking up the OMP manually will make sure its good and lubricated. I will definitly come out and help out with this sort of meet, but the only way im taking the zoom zoom cleaner to my engine is if its followed by cranking up the OMP for the suggested time. thats just the way i see it. i know alot of guys do this without a hitch and whatnot, but i wont risk it myself.
After reading what Greg has said I think I will let the dealership do it. Greg think it is really necessary? It was recommended to me at my last check up, but said don't worry about it since I redline every day and push my car hard when I can. They didn't seem to question it.
You can seafoam in your driveway with no problems just a little different then the dealer. This is in the DIY instructions.
"18)Make sure no one is around, cuz its gonna smell. FIRE THE BABY UP ! At this time, you can let the engine suck about 1/8 cup of CLEAN ENGINE OIL or 2 Stroke oil premix into the nipple for extra lubrication. Its going to smell really bad and you'll see TONS of white smoke out of your exhaust ... See pictures."

By doing this, and premixing(which mostof us do anyway) you will be fine. You would be directly lubricating the internals.

that is alright i guess, but the fact is that the OMP injects oil directly onto the apex seals if im not mistaken. directly lubricating the parts taht need it where as dumping a hole bunch of unmetered 2 stroke into the engine while its running just douses everything. again, im not saying that doing this yourself is a sure fire way to kill your car or anything, im just saying from what i know that ithere is no way i would do this in my driveway at home.
I may be wrong about this but its al I could find on the OMP. The OMP injects .04 quarts of oil into the engine for every Gallon of gasoline. That means you get about .00222 quarts injected into your engine for every 1 mile you drive(roughly, using 18mpg average).
You are claiming that Mazda increases the OMP injection by 2000% which would mean that the OMP goes from .00222 quarts every mile to .0444 quarts every mile. Idling for 15 minutes would burn approx. 1/10 of a gallon at .0444 quarts of oil per gallon. After a little more math, you can calculate that you have injected .07 cups of oil in that 15 minute time period. We will call this .1 cups of oil. So, instead of adding 24 milliliters of oil in 15 minutes(1/10 of a cup), you would add 29 milliliters of oil over 5 minutes(1/8 a cup).
All in all, same out come, shorter period of time, the engine will be fine and will have proper lubrication.

Where do you think those ports ultimately lead to? Adding 1 ounce(1/8 of a cup) slowly into your engine through the ports is going to have the same result. When doing this you dont have the engine suck it up as fast as possible. Everything is done slowly. I think you are overly concerned.

okay, the big difference in my mind is that the OMP injection is timed to spray onto the apex seal as far as i understand. your method has the oil just coming through the intake port when the rotor passes the SIDE intake port. this oil will be all over the rotor face and possibly side seals and not on the apex seals which is mainly where you want it.
What you are stating is that the seafoam enters the engine through the side ports and removes all lubrication even off of the apex seals. So, how does it remove the lubrication from the apex seals if it never gets to the apex seals? Your statements contradict one another. If the seafoam can remove lubrication then the oil can provide lubrication to all the same parts.

That I do agree with and between premixing, for extra lubrication, and adding some oil into the ports, the engine will be fine since that extra lube from premixing normally wouldnt be there.
If you are putting Seafoam into your engine THROUGH the side ports, does this remove the lubrication from the apex seals aswell as everywhere else inside your engine?

At this point, based off of research and the trials of many, many DIY'ers, you can safely do this yourself without causing any damage. Although I am sure someone will eventually **** it up. Just look at all the 100k+ mile members. Most of them have done this. The real questions are do you feel comfortable to do this yourself and/or do you want to pay $80+ for a $5-10 job? Also, when the dealer does this for you, how long does it take? I know you are suppose to let this stuff sit in your engine for a few hours to dissolve all of the carbon buildup. I wonder if they just put it in the engine, wait 10-30 minutes and send you on your way.
If you do endup having a meet for this, anywhere with light and an open lot/field will do. Make sure it is a WIDE OPEN area that has somewhere close by to go to eat or watch a movie or something. The reason it needs to be wide open is because everyones car will smoke like its on fire for a good 5-10 minutes.
