I dont know anyone that'll apply Zaino for you, they probably dont exist out there, what you need is a place to clean your car tho. Forget about zaino, they should be applied under the sun in warm weather, do so in summer, and you'll find that when the snow hits, the salt/dirt will be easily removed when you wash it by hand/car wash, etc.

There is not much you can do now, ask for a friend if you could borrow time in his garage to just hand wash your car with a warm bucket of water. Thats what I do, even without soap, the salt and dirt just lifts off. I hope that helps.

p.s. i have about 5 coats of thick thick zaino on it tho.=d

If there's only one type of black, why do people need to call it Brilliant Black? Same for green, blue, and yellow.

Cleaning daily is the only way to drive a clean black every day. If you don't live in an apartment you'll have to make do with car covers, scratches, and morning dew, but you can still clean every day. If you have an apartment, you should have a garage, and you should still clean every day. There's no other way.

argh

after hand-wash:

after a roadtrip to Ottawa and back:

On a side-note, this weekend was the first time I've had to start the car after being parked outside at minus 21. She sounded -horrible-: very coarse revving around 3.5k (normally she starts up around 2k rpm and smoothly comes down to an idle of 1.5 before I drive off) with the clutch out, and then a few minutes of the engine oscillating between 2.5 and 3.5 (as if I was blipping throttle) which wouldn't stop unless the clutch was in. The engine coolant light was also on for the first minute or so (no coolant leaks anywhere I could see), but it went away, and I didn't get any CEL's either. Eventually she warmed up OK.

Others have posted similar ungraceful cold-start behaviour, but my question is should I expect this every time there are negative double digit temps? I'm moving to Ottawa soon and this concerned me.

Sounds reasonable. Didn't the older 7s exhibit the same harsh starting in the winter?

Mine does this too, with the exception of the coolant light. Revving up and down and sounding like something that shouldnt be running and it was a miracle it started which of course, it wasnt a miracle.. it powered right up.

But it warmed up fine, and drove fine. I am told this is normal in lower double digit temps, however freaked out it makes us having to listen to it...! Mine also has the tendency to fire out smoke rings (some quite far, 3ft or better) until it warms and they get softer and fatter and dont pop out quite so far. Apparently normal as well. Interesting to watch when its cold out and you can see them better..

Good luck with your move to Ottawa.

Hi Early,
My wife fired up our 8 this morning -21 and she got the same sequence of curious events. First time for us and, as you report, once it was warmed up it ran fine for the rest of the day.

Rotaries do not like extremely cold weather! As you found out, once a bit of heat gets into them, they're fine.

Less restriction when there are no emissions on the car...

I had an 87 RX7 for 10 yrs and never ever had any trouble starting in winter. Had no more than a couple of floods but I'm pretty sure it was during Summer and was somehow my fault. All it took was flooring the pedal and she would start after several tries.

As winter approaches, if I parked the car at someone's place, the battery would have a hard time cranking the engine over. My battery doesn't like the cold! lol

Otherwise the car has never had a problem starting.

the "surge" in revs is normal under extreme cold. Just let it warm up until it stops doing it. It usually happens when you get to the -30 mark and the car has been sitting for a while outside.

Mine does the coolant light trick every time it gets cold. Usually starts doing it late November and stops in March. Comes on for like 2 seconds, then goes off. Or comes on and then goes off as soon as I put it in reverse. I asked about it at 2 different dealers and was told nothing was wrong and coolant levels were fine.

As for course revving, this year mine started course idling. Right when I 1st turn it on and for about 5 min. "Whirrrrrr <hic> Whirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr <hic> whirrrrrr" kinda deal. The RPMs don't gradually go up and down, it's really more of a hiccup. Now this could be a sub -20 thing but I never noticed it last year. Mind you I don't remember it being anywhere near this cold last year either and I was storing my car in a garage overnight instead of out in the driveway (which wounds my soul deeply).

Here's something else new. My heater seems to be finicky. For one, it takes awhile to get hot, more so than last year but again, colder and no garage. But worse is once it gets toasty I try to turn it down a bit and it seems to do nothing at like 9 then 8 then all of a sudden at 7 it goes ice colds (keep in mind 7, 6 are clearly in the Red on the dial with 5 sort of being the divider). So then I go to bump it back up and it stays ice cold unless I turn it all the way to 10 (max heat). Then it gets hot again. Repeat. Try to turn it down a bit... ICE cold... turn it up incrementally and nothing until I get to 10. VERY frustrating. I guess I should take it in and complain. Anyone else experiencing this?

Update: In this thread 2 people mentioned replacing their heaters for what sounds like a similar problem. Hmmmmmmm https://www.rx8club.com/canada-forum-35/when-do-we-get-free-courtesy-car-108453/

Oh ya, last thing Eug. Last year I lived in London and I would literally plow side streets with deep snow. Resulting in the liner on the bottom of the front scoop coming off. They replaced it under warranty but made it sound like I was being done a favor. If you're moving to Ottawa beware streets with semi-deep snow!

Justarius

P.S. Maybe this thread should be renamed "Canuck RX8 Winter Woes" since we've gone OT.

Regarding your heater problem - get it checked by the dealer. My heating unit was replaced two winters ago under warranty....no hassle from the dealer and it was done in a day.

Hey Justarius,
My 04 heater was doing that too. Fine for awhile but when it got too hot, we'd adjust the heat anmd all of sudden it was cold . Told the dealership about the problem, printed some posts from this forum, printed a NA TSB and the dealership ordered in a new heater and replced it under warranty. I have 39 000KM and an extended warranty. Seems to work fine now.

I don't have this problem at all.

The reason for this is that my heater never gets hot.

But it must be working as it does a good job of keeping the windows clear. Maybe it just seems weak because the seat heaters warm my *** up so quickly.

I'd like the idea of a Frosty Canadian RX 8 winter thread. The commonalities on this thread have eased my mind greatly!
I also want to post the VR after a days driving. Not as bad as some but....

I assume it's [Mazda] North America Technical Service Bulletin. There's a good list of them at Rosenthal Mazda's site.

Hey Rasper, did your dealership give you any grief with being presenting with the TSB? I printed one off for my broken ebrake handle, and at first the service advisor at Probart's tried to say it didn't apply because TSB was only for the states:. They eventually replaced the handle under warranty anyways, but if that's the attitude I'm going to get everytime I want something fixed I may decide to drive all the way out to Richmond Hill where my car's original dealership was (Avante, apparently everyone says they're excellent).

Thanks for the definition. I didn't notice you were from London, I moved to Mississauga from London about Sept/Oct (don't miss the snow belt let me tell you!). I bought my 05 Shinka from Probart. I have to agree with you, occasionally they've been picky over repairs. I've found the dealer here more forthcoming (if slower).

Having been to multiple dealers I can tell you they never look-up previous work. If one gives me grief I'll just try my chances at the other.

Re: TSBs, the Dundas Mississauga Mazda guy gave me a website to look them up myself so clearly they recognize them. I wonder if it was US... I'll post it if I can find it.

Hey Eug,
No, the dealership is in a little village just out of Chatham. I had tried to explain the problem to the service manager and the to the mechanic. I left it one day and they couldn't reproduce the problem.
I found a description of the problem by one of the members on this site and he had a link to the North American TSB. I printed all the posts from members with the similar problem as wellas the service bulletin, apologized for my "zealousness" and left the car a second time (always provided with a loaner). This time they must have fund something because they simply informed me they were replacing the heater under warranty. I have never encountered any attitude. They just accepted the papaers I had for them and went about their business. I have been very happy with thhis dealership.
Oh yeah, my wife is in love with the CX 7 sooooo

I think the TSB described a test for technicians to try for mid-range heat (I think)

Crap, I can't find the TSB for the heater at Rosenthal Mazda's site. Any idea where you found it? I know for a fact my dealer recognizes TSBs but can also be picky so I definitely want to go in there armed with one...

Hey Justarius,
I searched the forum a bit and came up with some of the links that may be helpful.

https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...eater+problems

https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...7&page=3&pp=15

http://www.finishlineperformance.com...ins_index.html

It starts with the hvac just blowing cold air, good in summer, bad in winter. Then, if you move the temp control ****, sometimes you have to move it multiple time back and forth, it'll switch to all hot. Good in winter, bad in summer. Every once in a while it'll just change on its own. There is no inbetween, just hot-cold.

It was diagnosed as the heater control unit. The little ***** (temp control-fan) are attached to the unit. It plugs into the center console that has the radio and such attached to it. You can buy it new for about $250.00 from Online Mazda Parts, or call Mazmart and get one used for about $125-150, I don't remember. I just received my new used one from Paul. I plan on installing it tonight or tomorrow night. I'll let you all know if it fixed it.

Hey Rasper, thanks for all the info. I did find a few of the other threads already but it looks like there's several more! I checked http://www.finishlineperformance.com...ins_index.html up and down but couldn't find any mention of HVAC bulletins. There's 1 about AC Amplifier replacement and a couple about broken temp control dials/part numbers for the dials. Nothing about the Heater Control Unit per say. Did you have a TCB that referenced your problem? In one of the other threads someone said there were multiple HVAC bulletins but again, I don't see any... Maybe it was taken down?

Thanks again,

Justarius

P.S. Still got 1.5 yrs left on the warranty so I shouldn't need to order it myself but I'll have to remember Mazmart for when I run out!

Hey Justarius,
Yeah, I've been trying to find it agaiin as well. I can't seem to get bak to it either.
I found a thread that described the temperature problem but with the ir conditioner.

https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...er+control+tsb

the thread was A/C blows HOT after recall

I'll call the dealership tomorrow to see if they can reference it.

The problem revolved around the temperature control ****. Once the dealership found that problem it was they who said they'd replace the whole heater.
It is a control **** issue, I believe.

I'll call the dealership tomorrow.

Sorry it's not straightforward
