COolant Levels...

Hey Guyz,

1. How often do you guyz need to top up the coolant in your cars???

2. If while doing an oil change the guys forget to put the oil filter on & oil leaks out is it bad?? I do believe I've burnt most of it off. Just wondering...

NEO / FOOTMan: my battery light came on again!! few secs this time while doing 130ish...stupid speedometer is off by 20km...

I never really top off the coolant since I never find a need to. I dont track my car though so that must be why.

As far as the oil filter goes, no its not really bad unless you hate wasting oil heh. It will just smell bad while the oil burns off from around the engine.

Don't ever have to top mine off Leesha. Please make sure you aren't overfilling it!
Here's where the marks are, they are hard to see....they are on the left side of the bottle.

Filling it too high can lead to other issues!

Oil filter......well, it will make a hell of a mess as I'm sure you now know, and will probably drip for awhile if not fully cleaned from the engine, but it shouldn't harm anything! Smack him though! If it was a friend that one thing, if it was a shop or somewhere, I'd make them clean the engine bay.

Wow am I really hearing that a missing oil filter does no damage? You guys woke up too early, back to bed!

If it's just for a few KM you'll be fine, but I'm sure there's a big mess everywhere. It also means you're running with low oil which is not a good thing, so make sure you check the level and top it off. If you've been driving like this for a while it means your oil isn't getting filtered... that must be getting pretty nasty. I'd flush the oil out in this case.

And if I were you I'd make 'em lick up the mess and grovel for a while... this is the kinda **** people need to lose their jobs over.

Wulf................I'm assuming that it was found to have happened while she was still there. I know it's wrong to assume, but I thought that was the case and they found it on start-up and said..........****, I forgot the filter. Put one one, re-checked oil level and added what they lost. And then................sent her on her way????? God, I hope that's what happened or you are right......the whole situation changes dramatically.

Hmm, the coolant levels are off again.
I think this is starting to tell you a few things.
Footman and I checked the levels and filled the coolant to the appropriate level. At the time it was really down.
Since the problem has reoccurred, this can only lead to 2 things.
1. (the more optimistic situation) there might be a hose leak or even possibly a rad leak causing the coolant to go down.
2. (the worst case) the engine is burning the coolant, which means time to get a new engine.

I would take a good look at all the hoses, check around the rad. If there's no signs of coolant leaks, the engine is burning off the coolant. We all know what that means.

there's no way he would have not known the filter was there when the car was started up, which i'm guessing is how they figured it out. Oil is going to have gotten everywhere and unless they powerwashed your engine compartment you're going to get oil burning off for a LONG time.

Hey guyz... ya sucks... ok so which hose do I check...lol... is there an easier way of know?

Yes I was still at the place and my son is the one that did it along with my rear dif or whatever its called and transmission change. He was showing off so I guess he had to screw up on someones car...why not his moms right. But hey I got a family 50% discount on the bright side.

Ok this coolant thingy now. The light is coming on more now. Should I let the dealers check it out?

sounds like the sensor is going bad. either unplug it or pay for a replacement bottle.

Yep, let's don't do a repeat of the last funny fiasco Leesha(I won't bring it up.....but makes me chuckle to this day).
This is actually the best case scenerio for you Leesha, the sensor is bad just as Laythor says.
Think Mazmart has them for about $140.00 because you have to change the whole bottle, either that or unplug it(look at the pic) and just check your level pretty often. It's right on the other side from how your pic was taken.

Neo............see below.......she confirmed level, so it's the sensor.
Dare I ask her what exactly the light looks like this time? (ha ha)

here's my story i'm sure ive posted this in other threads but anyways,
had a reman put in at 75 000km used a bit of coolant light came on no more than twice a season didnt think much of it fast forward to this summer 162 000km just dropped a friend off after coming back from south florida did a decent burn out small amount of wheel hop 15 min later coolant light is on can smell coolant. i now have a crack in the front housing starting from the trailing spark plug.

annoyed with myself since i could have had this covered as it seems obvious it was a manufacturing defect. now im stuck buying a new engine.

Where you attempting to go with this Nate? What manufacturing defect?
This post has very little to do with Leesha's issue IMO, nor does your crack in the housing have anything to do with the light........until you started loosing it at a rapid rate due to the crack.

Wish you wouldn't go to the dealer on this one, but I can't stop you.
Knowing what we know from last time(a few months ago), the fact of when it's coming on now, and the fact that you haven't lost any coolant, we pretty much know it's the sensor and keep in mind you could get one here for $163.00 and have the boyz put it in for you.

See what they are gonna charge you.

Isn't this covered under the warranty? That is why the dealer is doing it. They will call me to let me know if the extended warranty covers this. Truthfully...I really don't need the sensor so we shall see what I do if I end up having to pay for this.

I had this same problem. Dealership took care of it under warranty with no hassles...

Didn't know you had purchased an extended warranty Leesha......my bad.
Under the normal 3 year B toB warranty it would, and I know it would not be covered under the US 8 year 100k mile one.
I'm not even sure what the original warranty is is Canada.

Rems your right its covered. They ordered it.

Maz: I'm not sure either...lol...just ask one of the boys here. Its 80,000km or 3yrs which ever comes first. I'm only at 64, 000km approx. I paid something like $2400 I think for the extended (could go check but too lazy to early in the morn...). Can't remember.

Glad I did it now. Lets hope this is the case and the problem doesn't persist after it is change. Thx guyz.

TO get your money's worth, you need to have more than $2400 in items that need repair in the next 5 years...

Start counting now. you're down $250 this time
