I would in a heartbeat.

Typical shame on the media for taking the single top speed reach (probably in a straight line on the highway mentioned) and applying it to the entire chase, including residential streets. As a commenter noted, the Wave has a 103hp engine...there is no way they could reach those speeds without a long straight stretch, and certainly couldn't maintain it.

And they are right, it is a lose-lose, between being blamed for taking action and being blamed for not taking action. I would rather be blamed for taking action and assisting in the removal of a dangerous person, than blamed for not taking action and feeling the guilt if said person harmed or killed someone else because I didn't give chase.

If they had just slowed down the suspect would have thought he lost them and they could have followed at safe speed. Police do this same thing all the time, its even easier when your car does not have a big light bar on top.

The had good intentions but a very big what if. How would you feel if you or the suspect killed an innocent person. Its bad enough the women was attacked, dont make it worse by ruining your life and someone elses.

It's a risk, granted. But then it goes to the mentality you have. If everyone thought "what if I make it worse by ruining my life or someone elses", then no one would become a cop.

Mentally, I accept that risk, because someone has to fight back against those who would cause harm and havok to those around them. And fighting is inherently risky. If everyone was a peace-loving person and crime didn't exist, then there wouldn't be a need. But in the absence of that, someone needs to stand ready to take the risks. Police officers do it every day. Just because someone doesn't have the training doesn't mean they are willing to stand by and watch it happen. It all gets back to mentality. Something specific to each person, and something you can not change.

I am a cop and I have been in dozens of high speed chases. Its risk verses gain. In this case, they had a vehicle description, probably a license plate number. Let the cops handle it. Even the police said with the speeds, traffic and locations they would have terminated the pursuit.

In my experiance, the faster you chase them the faster they try to go until they drive over their head or out drive the car. The end result is a crash, fine if its on the freeway and no one is around but in residential neigborhoods its not cool. Would you chase someone into the neighborhood your kids are playing in? Well someones kids are playing there.

Oh and until you have been a victim, witness or participant in one of these situations gone bad you cant really say you are fully awear of the magnitude of the situation and consequences.

Again, my suggestion which is the same one that police officers are told to do when off duty. Be a good witness. In this situation, follow the vehicle at a safe distance and speed, fall back and let the driver think you stopped chasing him. Stay on the phone and direct the police to the driver. If you really think its worth the risk, then take your car and smash into the other driver, then you are only risking your life and your car, not someone elses life or property. It hypocretical to say you ar willing to risk other peoples lives and property but not sacrifice your own.
