I went in for an oil change today, and service guys told me that car shakes a bit when running (which is true), and offered to replace engine mounts, which is covered by warranty.

Now, that's cool and all (mine is a 2005, so that extended engine warranty is really cool), but I am not really annoyed by the shaking, and I am afraid they might break something.

Anyways, is it worth it?

BTW, really liked the service today @ Airport Mazda - Scarborough Mazda is across town from where I work, so it's not an option for me to go there for such a small thing as an oil change. Is there anyone from Airport Mazda here?

if they cant replace the mounts without breaking something then they shouldnt be a mazda dealer. its free man, just do it. I recently did my mounts and it idles so much smoother now.

 

Just have them replace them. They're held in by 2 bolts and a nut. Very easy to do

 

Go for it... but make sure that you and the dealer rep perform a pre-service 'inspection' to ensure that nothing was wrong with your car before servicing... it's just a 'just in case' thing to do in case something gets broken...

 

Hey, thanks for calling my thread dumb. My point was this:

I had various cars during last 10 years, largest mileage on my car was around 300k, and I have never ever had to replace engine mounts. My RX only has 50k.

And by the sound of it, I thought they have to lift the engine, remove old mounts, etc, which is not trivial. So I just thought - why fix what's not broken, it's not a matter of "trust"

 

dont worry about it. you got one negative comment. what most of us are politly saying is that its no big deal. I work at a mazda dealer and I did mine myself after work one day. All i did was put the car up on the hoist, remove the front wheels, use a transmission jack and some wood (so as not to hurt the oil pan) to take some of the engines weight off the mounts. unbolt them (like easy said, its 2 bolts and a nut) and put the new ones in. Its a peice of cake and like i said, if they could screw this up, they have no business being a mazda dealer. So make your appointement and get your free mounts. I had to pay for mine.

Edit: something worth noting. As you said you have never had to put engine mounts on your other cars before. Well the RX8 uses partially liquid filled mounts. this means that the weight of the engine is not supported by the liquid, however the bottom portion of the mount is filled with a liquid, i supose to dampen movement. this is likely what goes in them. Many new cars (and ever older models) share this design and over time it can fail for various reasons. its nothing to worry about as its under warranty still for you. also, they arent really that expensive anyways.

 

sounds like a trust thing. if you trusted them you wouldn't be afraid of them breaking something.

anyway, it's not that the mount is broke its the rubber that they used is worn and collapsing. The rubber inside the metal ring is hallow and the chamber is partially oil filled. it's pretty common on these cars and your dealer seems to be pretty on the ball. Preemptively offering to replace them was pretty nice of them. Some people have to fight their dealership tooth and nail to get anything done.

How come you had to pay for them? Are you out of extended engine warranty already? Are you past eight years or 160,000 kilometres? Well, first cannot be true, so...

 

the mounts are not covered under the extended engine warranty in fact are they covered in any kind of warranty since they are a "wear" item?
the dealer is just trying to help you and themselves out you get things fixed they get paid for fixing it.

This is a pretty common thing with the RX8. I'm on my third set now., And I think I broke another one. So I'll be getting another set here soon. Oh and 79,000 miles.

i'm pretty sure if it was covered under warranty greg would have used it. he loves mazda but to buy parts unnecessarily. everything seems to be a wear item with this wonderful car. coils fuel pump...

i'm still standing by that this is NOT covered under the ENGINE warranty

 

alright.. here's the thing. The driver's side motor mount has been flagged as being a potential problem spot on the car. As a result a TSB has been posted.. and IF you're covered under the extended warantee then chances are you're covered. For those of us who aren't (IE me and greg).. we have to drop the coin. With regards to the mount itself... they've produced a whole crap load more for the driver side as a result of this failure... as a result.. they're also a crapload cheaper then the passenger side when you pick em up.

okay, what everyone seems to be missing (with the exception of chris i supose) is that there are several overlapping warranties on our cars. Yes, there is an 8 year/160 000km engine warranty. that covers ONLY the engine. no sensors. no intake manifolds, not even a lose bolt on the engine. it only covers the keg itself and any parts contained inside it.

There is also the base bumper to bumper warranty 3yr/80 000km. this will cover almost litterally everything on your car with the exception of brakes and the clutch, unless it is determined that there was a defect causing them to fail or wear more than they should. this is almost never the case, so dont even try that one.

There is a 5yr/100 000km drivetrain warranty.

Lastly, for standard warranties, there is an 8 yr/128 000km emission control device warranty.

Then there is MAP (mazda added protection) which i dont recall the details of. If you are still within the drivetrain one, the dealer might be doing that...i dont know for sure if its covered there or not. its sort of a semantics issue really...but i doubt that its covered. My car was just outside of that time wise when i did my mounts so i didnt even bother to check into it. If you are still in MAP warranty, i should be covered no question.

I must be within last days of my 5 years. And yeah, they mentioned TSB, that most likely applies to drivetrain warranty. So, guys with 2005s, take note, if you want your mounts changed, you might be able to for free.

 

Powertrain warranty 5 yr/100,000 km includes motor mounts. It says right in the print.

Since this thread is already bumped may as well ask instead of making new thread. Would vibration with the A/C on be possibly caused by the drivers side motor mount? How much does one go for anyway?
