Exclamation Cat #3??? Dealership issue Help

Hey guys,

Quick history lesson. So I bought the car 2 years ago and within a few weeks P0420 code came up (Catalytic Converter Issue) So the replace the $2000 pipe for free cause it was under warranty. Now 2 years later, the P420 code has come back to haunt me yet again. So I took it to the dealership today, they said they cant replace the cat for free yet without getting Mazda Head Office/ Technical Support to approve the Cat replacement. So they made a ticket regarding my issue and they said they should get back to me within the end of the day. I still have 1 year left on warrenty, I have nothing aftermarket done to the motor so I dunno what kind of conclusion they are going to come up with. Any comments/suggestions will be highly appreciated. The dealership that I took the car to is Mazda of Brampton.

Don't worry about it dude. This is a part of Mazda's standard warranty process now. EVERYTHING has to go through Mazda Canada for approval before they replace anything. If they haven't taken the cat off to do a visual, they'll general do a couple of tests, check the plugs, coils, wires, etc.

If it is your cat that's dead, they will replace it.

Yea, I saw that he had the CPU hooked up to it, and the mussels on the exhaust tips. He said it is dead. He said the new rx8s have a better cat, the material inside it is much better, just curious if those pipes fit on our 8's

I wasn't aware that they made any changes... if they were going to do that it would make sense that they'd release an updated cat for the series I... seeing as how they've had to replace so damn many of them.

More like they changed the ECU on the series II so it helps limit the chances of flooding and driving hard when the engine is cold etc etc

They dont have much of a choice to warranty it.

Its federal law in Canada and USA.

They would be hard pressed to find an excuse not to.

Some people here have changed their CAT 3-4 times already on warranty.

I have to change mine, again, too. I'm thinking of bringing it in, getting a new CAT, selling the cat and buying a midpipe instead.

Once I hit 128 000km, no more cat warranty. And no emissions test in Quebec, so....

So mazda called me to come in today so they can run a test on the cat. This is after they cleared the light. So they did the test on the cat with the cel light off. And the cat passed. So they claim the pipe is fine, they said to drive it and see if i can get the light to come back on again and when it does they will do the test with the cel light on. These people are wasting my time.

I have had approximately 5 catalytic converters replaced on my car. I just installed the BHR coil kit on my car. I hope this helps. I have about 1 yr and 10K miles left on my emissions warranty. I am serious considering getting a resonated mid pipe to swap in/out when testing time comes around. This would save my cat, so I won't have to locate and buy a new one if my present one goes out.

I've had the P0420 code before
After a fast highway run I stopped for gas then another high speed run then stop for an hour then CEL on next start.
Reset of CEL and it never came back.
Physical investigation showed that the CAT is perfect and it easily passed the emission test.
IMO the rear O2 sensors are pretty twitchy.
FYI
My coils, plugs and wires were pretty fresh at the time but now are being replaced with BHR ignition.

Charles, would you be an OEM or a VAR in this case?
