Car turns off when in drive? Any ideas..
So I have an 04 triptonic rx8 and I just got the coils, spark plugs, and ignition wires changed. Today as I am driving the car is picking up speed really slowly from first to second gear. For example 0-20 in 10 seconds ish. And then when I pulled into my driveway the car started to shake and just turned off on me in drive. I turned it on and off a few times and soon as I put it into drive off again. Another thing was that it took the car alot longer to start up again and t made kind of a screeching sound when starting, like something was grinding. If anyone could help me that would be great.

classic signs for engine replacement hope you have good maintenance records and under 160 000 km so mazda wont have issues approving a replacement engine.

Try doing an ECU reset... Mine would die after i put a Drop in K&N filter in it and my Racing Beat exhaust, long story short is it would die at a light but the problem was the MAF sensor wasnt reading the airflow right sense my new K&N breathes 40% better not to meantion my exhaust.... Try the reset
Make sure you car is off, turn your key to ACC, then hit the brake pedal 20 times in under 10 seconds i believe, you should see your Oil pressure needle sweep to the middle and back down again. Then your set.

DONT RESET THE ECU! if this was not happening before you got the coils done, go back to the place that did them BEFORE you do anything. the computer could have stored a code that could help them diagnose it. reseting the ECU should be a last resort, not a means of diagnosing a problem. the ECU will store valuable information in it that will be wiped clean. even if the CEL isnt on, there are still ways of seeing recorded data in it that can go a long way in diagnosing a problem.

rotarygreg is right... do not reset the PCM. You want to get those codes read first.
But start off by checking the coils and verify they are wired correctly.
Its pretty obvious to tell which wire harness plugs into each coil based on the length.
Then verify that the coil is going to the correct spark plug.
Starting from the front of the car, the coil order is L1 T1 L2 T2.
You'll see an 'L' and 'T' stamped on the engine right by the spark plug so its easy to tell which plug is the leading and which is the trailing.
Then verify that each spark plug wire is secured onto the plugs.
Push in the wire boot with your thumb while twisting the boot side-to-side.
You should hear/feel a click once its snapped in (though sometimes you don't just so you know).

I got all the work done at Scarboro Mazda (very well known and reliable), so I don't think thats the problem and I am going to go see them tomorrow.

thats great. scarb mazda is a great place to take your car but remember their employees arent robots. they do a great job there but they are human after all. people will eventually make mistakes. **** happens. better to bring them back the car in an unmolested state. IE, dont touch anything and let them look at it before you go after it. if they just did something to it and now its acting up, having them recheck their work is the starting point for figuring out whats wrong. the best part about scarb mazda is their service. Im sure they will make it right if they are at fault. good luck and keep us posted.

so I found out today that there is something wrong with the apex (not letting carbon dioxide through or something like that) and that could have led to engine damage, so I might get a new engine depending on what mazda says
