Bought a RX-8! New Owner Needs Warranty Advice

Hey All,

I'm new to the RX-8. Bought it the other day from a bank repo auction. I called a Mazda dealership before I bought it and they said that the last owner lovingly maintained the car at their place and the original owner bought an extended warranty. They have records dating up to when the car had 46k. The car now has 64k.

Here's the thing. The girl at Mazda said that they can't tell me what the extended warranty on the vehicle covers - just that there is an extended warranty and when work is done, the dealer will submit a claim. If it is approved by Mazda, then the warranty covers it - and if not, the warranty did not cover it. She said this is separate from the extended warranty on the engine.

The only reasons I could think of for the dealership not knowing the terms of the warranty:

-The dealership wants me to do all my work there (seeing as they'll get paid regardless) or;
-The warranty is not transferable and the dealer will neglect to inform Mazda that there is a new owner of the car, so they pay for the warranty claim.

Strange eh? Anyway, what should I do to find out the warranty details on the car? Advice?

Thanks!

-Huck

The same thing happened to me when I bought my 04. They said it had a warranty but not sure how much. I ended up buying a 3rd party warranty until 80000, cause you never really know buying a used car. I think you are right with the dealership just trying to reel in all the money they can. btw/Your engine is covered 'till 160000kms under Mazda.
I thought I was getting played but you are the third person I heard about this.
I am in Windsor, the other was in Quebec City, so we know it is not regional.

Welp... standard warrantee's apply. So the egine core, e-systems are like 8 year 160k.. most of the other major stuff falls under year or 100k.

Either way.. as long as you remember to check the oil every other fillup.. you really shouldn't have many problems with the car.

Exclamation So what do I do to actually know what is c

Thanks for the responses. Bob - congrats to you too.

I was hoping that I could call Mazda Customer Relations and ask. They should be able to tell me, shouldn't they? I'm just afraid that the extended warranty is not transferable - but that is so unlikely it is ridiculous, right?

Normal manufacturer extended warranties are transferable with the car. You own it, it's your property. I'm sure there must be a way through to determine what it is through Mazda.

the Mazda dealer i purchased my car from said it had no warranty at all even on the engine. luckly i didnt believe them, went to another dealer they ran my vin and turns out i had a extended warranty and it was transferable for a one time payment of $50. id call another dealer and ask them the same questions. theres alot of people that have no idea what they are talking about at mazda and will just lie to you instead of admitting that they dont know.

The dealership has access to Mazda's records for your vehicles. You need to talk to the Service staff--a Service Adviser or Service Manager. You also need to establish the maintenance record between 46kkm and 64kkm or there is a finite chance you will be unable to get any warranty work done

Two different Mazda dealerships confirmed that an extended warranty exists, but none could confirm what it covered. They said the same thing as the girl in my original message. Maybe they don't have access?

Now what?

Contact Mazda and not the dealerships. You should also fill in a "transfer card" (available at the dealership) and send it to Mazda.

bought my car used
had a cat clog up at 70,000
and had no records...
and well warranty covered im in atl
the first owner had my car in california and was in the military thats all i know of him
so i guess it depends on what your trying to get covered under warrantey saY.. your engine you'd probably need oil change records and what oil was put in etc since they can void your warranty if you put synthetic in haha or atleast ive been told they still will but for my cat they just had to see if the damage on the bottom where it was scratched caused it to clog or not and well they determined it didnt and yehp didnt have to pay $1100

oh and i filled out no such transfer but hey what ever mazda says you need to do i guess theres alot of fluctuations in procedure in different places of the country

I'm in the same boat as you, huck. I had been procrastinating calling Mazda about the warranty. It seems like I better get on it!

For those interested, I have a 2004 6MT "Titanium Grey".

Here are all the new and older TSB. Older ones apply only if you still have a bumper to bumper warranty. Take a look, you have nothing to loose. Perhaps some apply to your car.

Well first off congrats! I think I might be able to help you. I bought my 8 1 month ago from the biggest mazda dealership in north america which ironically is in montreal. 04 MT titanium grey with full mazdaspeed lipkit. Its a beauty.

Anyways... So when I was discussing with the lady at the time of purchase she wanted to sell me the extended warranty but would only tell me that it covers "whatever touches oil" I told her "if you want to sell me a car and a warranty which you will make great comission off of youd better show me service records, a carproof and tell me what the warranty covers" She said she couldnt do that. So I told her thanks goodbye.

Phone rings morning after... She says to me she got me service records for the car and a paper direct from mazda about every single part that their extended warranty covers. I told her the only way I buy the car is if you give me that paper so after speaking with her boss they finally gave me a copy of the extended warranty coverage, service records etc. Turns out I got the new upgraded starter and a new cat in june 09. Got new tires from them and a full brake job. Discs/pads all brand new. And all the recalls were done. I did pay 20000$ with the 3 year warranty and sales tx though. I think it was worth it.

SO LONG STORY but its an interesting one... I dont know why they dont want to share information... Maybe they want you to doubt your warranty so that when something breaks they could tell you its not under warranty when it is and you wouldnt even know.

I have the paper if any of you guys want it. The problem is that its in french. If you really need me to I could translate it in english but its like 1 page of very tiny fine writing. The warranty is really good and it covers A LOT OF PARTS by the way.

Let me know...

If the extended warranty is offered by the manufacturer, I'd love a copy of the coverages. It sounds like it should be exactly what I am looking for, however, if it's a third party warranty, it's not the one I need.

I'm calling Mazda tomorrow or on Monday, depending on my workload. I'll let you know what happens.

Thanks a bunch!

Huck

sorry to bump an old thread but i see my question is relevent.

so if i buy a used rx-8, inorder for mazda & dealership to honor the 8years/ 160,000 km warranty, do i need to have all the maintenance records and such? ( i read it somehwere before we do) but what happens if the seller dont have all the maintenance records since the day of purchase?

Get the VIN and call mazda. Ask them to tell you what kind of records they have for the car. The dealership will ask for all your oil changes and such in case you need to use the 100,000 miles engine warranty.
