awww, and she was doing so well too...

Last weekend the upshifts to 2nd started to become difficult and clunky, worse at higher rpms. So I shift at the redline... and got the most awful grinding crunch sound. Only going to 2nd though, no other gears. Thought "must be the synchro."

So I asked the dealership to have a look, while my brakes were being done (side note: Hawk Ceramic pads no more squeal!). They couldn't reproduce the grind. WTF? So I bring their tech with me for a drive. Can't reproduce it. Grr. I leave empty handed, drive home, then she starts grinding again. Everyone on the street stares. I fly back to the dealership and grab the same guy again. He drives this time. "Yep, that's the synchro." Guess we had to wait for the transmission to warm up...

Anyways, good thing it's still under warranty. However, it runs out this coming december, so now I'm left with deciding whether to buy an extended warranty or not... she's already had a few minor things done under warranty, but a few TSB's haven't declared themselves a problem... yet. Should I?

It's what an 05?
How many miles?
Happen to know your build date?
I'm facing the same situation soon, but haven't had any issues except the damn visor!

Yup ... I got an 05 with 44,000 km on it and I get a 4th gear grind when shifting from 3rd at over 5000rpm ....

Sooooo I skip 4th most times, however the transmission is still hanging in there (knock on wood) and it's been almost 4000km since the problem started.

I've just learned to nurse it along.

Sorry, don't mean to hijack the thread, but out of curiosity how long after you buy the car do you still have the option to buy an extended warranty?

not sure how long after you buy it. but i have warranty company's sending me stuff all the time to upgrade. not sure if its mazda or just another company but the last one i got i could get 75k more miles or 5 years for 150 a month and like a 200 down payment over 18 months and i have 32k miles on my car so it would cost like 3k to take it up over 100k miles.

I know I bought mine in Dec. of 05, and I just got another offer in the mail to extend the warranty the other day. That will give you some idea. I think you will get those even after your original warranty expires.

How much is the extended warranty and for how long does it go?

A bit of topic but; I occasionally have problem shifting to second and grinding (I have to do the, hold the artificially hold the clutch a bit longer then the shift). Will they even look for a problem if it can't be reproduced? Will I have to take the short shifter out?

I've got an 04 - and thank goodness, was still under warranty when the clutch/transmiss when out -- actually - still under warranty - but not for much longer LOL!

I've gotten emails, and snail mail warranty extended offers all over the place....
But for me, I got the extended warranty thru our dealership -- bumper to bumper the whole kit caboodle full meal deal... Was kinda hard not to get it when they offered our club a special deal on it at no interest LOL .. and it was a timely offer since most '04 are prob going out of warranty sometime this year = start of next (this just based on where things stand in our club - national figures may differ and I've not investigated) And I was just more comfortable getting this thru my dealership. IF you go for an extended warranty, I would make sure to research it completely before you decide who to go with.

Mines a daily driver -- and I drive it as they're meant to be driven (which translates to um, hard) So I want that puppy covered 100% at all times.

Basically, think it just comes down to personal prefrence. If something big does happen -- do you want it covered (having paid for that coverage in small monthly payments for a year) or do you just want to risk the out of pocket expense of what could be 1000.00 of dollars in one fell swoop?

My 05 has 90,000km of commuting and tracking on it. No problems at all with it. The tranny is as tight as the day I bought it.

That's good to hear...................honestly we tend to hear a lot more bad news and that's mainly because people are going to start threads and what not when all is well. I have an 05 with only about 12k and I haven't had one issue, but as you can tell.....I don't drive it much even though it is my daily driver! Go figure.

I had the same problem with 2nd and 3rd before, the dealer tried to re-build it and as soon as I picked up the car, went on the highway the gear wouldnt stayed in 6th. So I brought the car back and they replaced it with a brand new tranny!!

I'd say to stick with a factory warranty if you want to keep the car for a longer time...

The gear arthritis will be fixed next week. Service was surprised at the whackload of parts they had to order... Does this mean they'll have to drain the four bottles of brand new Royal Purple tranny oil I had them swap in literally 2 weeks ago? That would be too bad, since I haven't really had a chance to get used to the feel; I had Redline in there before and just wanted to see what difference the RP would make; the next day the shifts were absolutely butter smooth, but then quickly became rather "notchy". Then the synchro went.

I'm going to extend the factory warranty as well. Paying for peace of mind.

Im facing the same decision - my 3 year warranty runs out this month and I'm stuck on whether to spend the nearly 2K on the MAP warranty

Oh man, moving between 1 --> 2 is so hard!!! I can get 2 and 3, and the rest above smoothly consistently, but 1 --> 2 is still very inconsistent!

Well, eight days and two tranny rebuilds later... and the car's still not ready. Turns out both 2nd and 6th synchros had to be replaced, but for some reason it's been popping out of 1st on their road testing.

Not having a car sucks. Hopefully tomorrow...

No. They only give loaners for those who have the MAP, which I didn't.

Exact same situation, though I had 25000 km and it was only the 3 to 4 shift at 8000rpm + with the original fluid in it. Mazda gave me a new tranny, wasn't easy 'cause it only happened at 90-95 mph.

Don't nurse it, get it replaced.
