Agreed ^

At a time when a Ford Focus (ST) makes as much power as an FD and doesn't even torque-steer, whatever the new rotary will be, it will have to either do something to the tune of 450+HP, or something light, inexpensive, agile and reliable (like a Genesis or BRZ). There is no room for compromises any more.

So here's a question, would you be more or less likely to buy an RX8 if it had all the same handling characteristics, but with a boosted 4-banger putting out 270hp?

Can't have a mass appealing car with a sports car price, won't sell.
It needs to be special to make it worth the pricetag. As the Rx8 was, 4-door to bring a rotary car back to the masses, but didn't carry the Rx7 price tag.

They need a mid-engined 3-rotor sports car 400+ HP, 3000 Lb, NATURUALLY ASPIRATED, 10000 rpm... sell for $65,000+

give Porsche 911 a run for their money.

lol, yes, that would be great... except passing emissions with that kind of spec would be rediculously difficult/expensive. Could you imagine trying to pass emissions in the **** province of Ontario?!

...Just a thought, it would be kinda neat to get around those emissions entirely through use of a hybrid hydrogen and petrol combo... just as they did with thier prototype hydrogen RX8 awhile ago... Common Mazda, get a little creative with the bending the rules on today's emissions and what's considered the "norm"!

Futurama had it right when dealing with emissions law...

Mom: What was that?

Farnsworth: A flaming burp.

Mom: Does it always do that?

Farnsworth: It's not always a burp. We still have one problem though. This robot will never meet emission standards.

Mom: Crap spackle! We'll just call it a sport utility robot and classify it as a light truck!

Farnsworth: Well... I suppose the environment can take one more for the team.

The journos will damn it with faint praise over the fine handling but the rotary gas guzzling stigma will carry on.
.
Well not exactly. The larger displacement is still inside a housing identical in size as the 1.3L. The rotors, although larger in diameter are smaller in thickness, improving thermal efficiencies.

Theoretically the engine will produce more torque and burn less gas then the previous Renesis engine.

In addition a new spark system could be incorporated (laser ignition) and the highly efficient fuel injectors that were developed for the hydrogen rotary further improving fuel efficiency.

Mazda talks a bit about it here http://www.mazda.com/mazdaspirit/rotary/16x/
