You guys do know that the GS model is a 4port intake system and that the intake on the GT is a 6 port system, right?
In a nutshell, the GT will drink more gas when the all ports are open.
So when you guys are posting, please state which type of Rx-8 you drive as consumption should differ between the two.

I just got 11.1 l/100km on an automatic run to Toronto and back
from Southampton--450 kms and 50 l.'s. Used cruise control down most of Hwy 6/10 at 115 kms/hr. Have not changed oil yet.
AC only on 35% of trip.

Here's my CITY driving from my fill-up BEFORE heading to T.O.

27.85L 213.3 KM = exactly 13L/100Km.

This was all city.

I'll have to check my car for the receipts from the trip to T.O.

I'm at 3200Km now, but that last tank was like 2600Km or so.

This was 89 octance McEwen gas, doesn't seem to matter really I filled up with Esso 87 coming back from T.O. and it seems the same 1/4 tank left with 420km or so.

This is from the trip to Toronto. I filled up right before leaving.

Then drove into Toronto, then out to the meet. Got stuck in traffic for a while. But this was about 95% highway at 100Km/h approx. Although I did get it up to 170 at one point and a few 130's.

46.726L for 436.1Km

10.7L/100Km

I'll be filling up again tomorrow, that one will be interesting. Because it was the same highway trip on the way back, so same roads and all. But on the way back I travelled 120Km/h with MANY jaunts up to 150 and 1 up to 210!

Wing, on your way to TO were you cruising right at 100Kph? Seems awefully slow and boring... did it on purpose?

I am envious. Drove Edmonton to Red Deer and back today ( 350km round trip) All highway, set cruise to 125kmh in 6th ( rpm was below 4000).
Got 15.5l/100k

I don't get it Canzoomer... your car has a flaw or something because when i drive on HW at 115 i get close to 11 l per 100K.

I have a GS 6M that has , of course, no aid in traction whatsoever and i love it that way.

f1michel, I took highway 7 which is an 80Km/h 2 lane highway, I didn't cruise, I used my foot and had to pass on numerous occasions. Highway 7 was a pretty fun drive actually.

Although I got a big stone chip and just dust from another truck made a bunch of tiny little pin head spots on the hood.

The paint must be REALLY soft, because in 3 years with my tib I didn't get this many nicks! I ordered the touchup paint hopefully I can fix them.

That's too bad for your paint. I had the same problem about 2 weeks after i got the car, that stupid car in front of me was pulling a trailer on the HW (120kph) and hit a bump.... saw a few dozen little things fly up and couldn't slow down enough.... i have about 3 or 4 small chips. I'll wait a bit before touching them up, i'm afraid the touch up will be more visible then the actual chip.

Did an old man boring drive to Quebec City (from Laval) yesterday PM.

95% of the drive was done in 6 th speed at 110km/hr using the cruise control.

281.2 Km; I`ve used exactly 30.242 L for an average of 10.75L/100km.

When I saw that, I decided that the boring drive wasn`t worth it since I averaged 11.7 on that same trip done a week before (driving alot more aggressively). I therefore came back averaging +/- 140 km /hr. Haven`t filled up yet so, I don`t know my exact consumption for the trip back.

In Quebec I stopped to fill up at Esso on Neree-Tremblay street around 9:15pm (thursday night Sept. 18). There was a red RX-8 parked there. Didn`t seem to have no one sitting in it. I filled my car up and by the time I turned around to go and ask the clerk who`s car it was; it was gone .

Would it be anyone of you guys by any chance? Maybe you TT2RX8?

More mileage...

Another tank 10.8L / 100Km

This was on the trip back from Toronto averaging 120km/h with some FAST sprints and redline driving like mad.

Doesn't seem to matter what I do.

I'm down another quarter tank with 120km which seems about on par again for 11L/100Km this is all city so far and driving like crazy!

I'm going to make a spreadsheet.

The last tank was 87, but normally I use 89, haven't noticed a difference.

i'm using 87 for the last 6-7 tanks and it hasn't made a difference. I still can make about 11.6 L per 100K when i drive it like my mother would. If i just push it a bit it goes to 12.5

Found the key

I found the ticket to better mileage.
At least on the highway.
Keep the rpm below 4000

I made about 330km of highway, and 45 of city driving.
On the highway I ran in 6th at 4000rpm, which is 126kmh

I got 13.4l/100km or 17.58mpg.

Not by by any means "good" but lots better than the 15.-16.7/100km I was getting before on highway runs.

I looked in the RX-8 book tonight, and see that the first change over of the intake tracts happens at 3,750rpm, so I bet if I kept below that I could do quite a bit better.
Of course that is only 115kmh (71mph).
Legal but very boring.

Also, from a range point of view I got 372km on this tank with a 49.75l fill. At that rate I could have gone about 450km (279 miles) on a tank.

Lesson learned:
Drive close to speed limits, and keep revs below 4000 and mileage is acceptable.
I bet if I kept below 3750rpm i could break into 20mpg.

not that I would particularly like to drive this car that way.
If I wanted to do this I would buy an Echo.

I also get 13-14 MPG with 75% "gentle"/25% "aggressive" driving, and it didn't make any difference whether it was 87, 89 or 91 octane.

The procedure Environment Canada uses is:

Simulated Highway Course
The highway fuel consumption ratings are based on a simulated 16-km simulated highway course of 12 minutes with no stops. The top speed reached during the test is 96.5 km/h, and the average speed for the duration of the test is 77 km/h. Ratings are adjusted to reflect average, real-world driving conditions on typical Canadian highways at posted speed limits.

As you suggest, that would all be below 4000RPM, and probably all in sixth gear. I cruise at 120, which is probably just at 3750RPM. 115 would probably get better milage.

Well, I tried driving with the DSC off for an entire tank. I still only got 13.48 L/100km so that didn't help.

If staying below 3750 rpm is going to give us that much better mileage, can I please have a different 6th gear? One that puts me at 130 km/h at, say, 3700 rpm instead of 4100 rpm?

My first tank of gas, I got approx. 15.2L/100km. Not that great, but it was like 90% city driving, and since I'm new to stick I figure I probably wasted a bunch of gas overrevving it in 1st gear to get it going.
