I'd say you were lucky, or the installer didn't fit metal tint to the rear. If he didn't, you'd need a good eye to pick the difference. Tints can be matched up very well nowadays.

I can hear the cricket on ABC local radio with my tint, that's pretty much all I car about regarding AM radio.

That being said, the only use I have for FM (not that it is relevant to this thread) is to tune to my iPod dock. I'm dimly aware of the existance of commercial FM radio stations, and their stock in trade of pushing formulaic crap to the musically lazy.

Nothing like a bit of banter to liven up the forum!! Just thought this place could do with a little life!

Plus Revolver knows it's all good natured......

Anyways getting back on topic...of tint.....I have blue tooth connector, iPOD docker, AM band and some interest in FM band...well rarely...I have to agree with dBB there....

I have no issues with my reception of radio, or phone..and I know I have metallic tint on the car...maybe SS aren't jinxed after all???

Thank you everyone for your replies.

I thought of resurrecting this issue as the last time it was discussed was 2 years ago. Technology and experiences may have changed since then.

My decision:
get metalised tint. - I don't listen to AM anyway. FM is pretty crap with repeated play of old songs that I am tired of. One day they will update their collection.
I'm thinking a little more long term as one day I will sell my 8 and the next person may want AM.

I will look for some cheaper tinters since rotor convert mentions that the same film may be used by different companies with different margins. It was good to get some ideas on prices.

I'll post back when my 8's tinted.

Well

I got my 8 tinted today with metalised tint film to darkest legal on all windows and rear window. Doesn't seem very dark though.

I got it done with a guy who's been 15yrs in the business and he comes to you to put the film on. Nicely done and quickly too. Only took 1 hr. He normally charges $220 or $240, but I got a discount as I have a friend who will get his car done too. He uses MEP film. http://www.mepfilms.co.nz/index.html

Oh, and the AM reception was unaffected.

There is a slight green tinge to it which is due to the colour of the glass of the 8 mixing with the tinting film. Also annoyingly, the rear window demister lines now reflect any lights at night creating a flare effect. Anyone experience this?

Thats why you get 20% tints instead of darkest legal.

I got mine done with metalic tint and don't have this issue?? Seems strange?
Mine is not dark but highly reflective so it's hard to see in the car from outside, I don't have the green tinge either?? Must be the type of tint as you say. I would love to get the silver tint they have on the rally cars but that would be money down the drain and a defect sticker but hey it would look good till I got caught!

Happy motoring!

Don't tell Michael I posted a pic of an Audi on this forum....he'll go bananas. This is probably the car you are referring to. Some sheik's pure silver A8. Not steel, not aluminium......pure Ag silver.

Yep - dat's the one I was thinking of. Didn't know it was silver though - . What a tool.

There's some other shots of it somewhere on the web after the matching silver tint job.
