My car was parked outside last night. So what happens? Eggs and some lovely scratches.

The car was nowhere near home, so this person or people had no idea who owned the car. It was just a mindless vindictive bitter act.

When I was younger, the "bad kids" would maybe do things like putting honey on door handles or something. Never just mindless damage for the sake of it.

Imagine the outraged parent when their 15 year old son's throat is cut by a wildly upset person that caught them damaging their car.

There's something fundamentally wrong with the fabric of the society we live in when people do this sort of thing to complete strangers. Our laws are a joke and the punishment for crimes are pathetic.

I hope those responsible live a miserable and painful life and suffer a long drawn out death in agony and despair.

 

You forgot: "May they burn in hell for all eternity while their eyeballs are continuously pierced by red-hot lances and their entrails consumed by viral-infested maggots." That oughta just about even the score.

P.S. bummer about the vandalism. In general I agree with your social commentary.

It's about $2,500 of damage - but it seems the better repairers won't take on the work if you're insured with AAMI.

The compexity is the Velocity Red paint job. I'm told it's exceeding hard to match.

The egg even started to dissolve the head light plastic.

regarding the headlight lens, have you tried using "Mothers" brand plastic polish. It might be able to get the egg damage off the lens.

Damn man... my condolences go out to you... someone did my Impreza a few years ago, keyed 7 body panels right down to the metal... was only 6 months old at the time, was heartbreaking! My advice, get it fixed as soon as you can, then you won't have to be reminded each time you look at it, it's the only way to make you feel better.

What's the story with AAMI... did the repairers say why they weren't interested? May need to rethink my choice of insurer next time.

What suburb was your 8 ... might help one of us avoid a similar fate

 

I called on a couple of the bigger well equipped repairers and they said that AAMI cut their quotes to pieces and that there's no money in it for them - so they'd prefer not to do the work.

One repairer (certified BMW repairer, top quality premises) said he just refuses to deal with AAMI - that they have their own league of cheap repairers and you can't perform a quality repair for the money AAMI will pay. (This was the repairer Mazda advised to use!)

After several conversations with AAMI, the bottom line is I can run around and get quotes - but they will choose who they want to do the repairs - - - and I end up with an RX8 that looks like a multi coloured taxi!!! with AAMI's lifetime warranty on the wrong colour

AAMI was cheap, I now understand why. Fortunately the damage will probably only run up to a couple of grand - it's an expensive lesson, but I've learnt that I need to change the insurance company for both of our cars.

But I don't think it's a suburb thing. Talking to the repairers, this sort of thing - rocks, eggs, etc - is happening all of the time.

Earlier this year, I was knocked off of my motorbike by a driver in Cremorne. The ***** pulled into me and knocked me flat, drove off as fast as he could, stopped well out of range down the road, looked and drove off.

Dont give up yet ... you have rights

1) get your quotes from your preferred repairer (go for someone who specialises in sports/ euro cars/ resporation) and
2)then submit your claim.
3) If AAMI direct you to take the car to another repairer, DONT and contact them to pursue your wish to a specific repairer ask to discuss with a senior manager only and specify your desire is based on quality of a complicated colour
4) If they still press you to go to another repairer (even after your representation) contact the INSURANCE OMBUDSMAN (yes they have one too, not just banking)

Hmm... sounds like I might be in the same boat (both my '8 and the other car are insured with AAMI)... I'd be interested to know who you switch too.. I may follow your lead.

Maybe you can get AAMI to pay what they're prepared to pay and make up the difference yourself.... at least that's better than forking out for the whole thing yourself.

 

Another AAMI trick I've heard

A mate insured his (at the time new) 200sx for around $1200 . The SX was quite new at the time and the quote VERY competitive.
In year two he received price rise of arounf 10%
In year 3, before renewal) he got a phone call asking is his car was 'modified' he said no. A feew days later he got another call asking if he had 'driled alloy pedals'. He said yes (its standard on the R spec car) and they said that because of the modification, his new premium was $2500. (age >40, 60% NCD)
He replied that the pedals are 'standard fittment' and that he would not accept the price hike and wanted an explanation.
After a series of call to senior management, he finally got an explanation that the cars were proving expensive to cover so they were trying to rise premiums) !!!

Moral - take care with future year premiums!

 

The big problem is, a cheap job is not much more that the excess of $450. I'd probably be getting AAMI to tip in $500 a the most. For that priviledge, I get to was a day or more of contracting while I jump through the AAMI hoops.

I think AAMI is probably the Kmart of insurance companies - ideal for your 10 year old Pulsar...

When I was living in Oz, I always avoided AAMI like the plague. They've been notorious for this sort of crap for ages. However, IIRC you have the right to take your car to your repairer of choice. Read the fine print on your policy, and by all means contact the ombudman's office before you accept AAMI's cheapass solution.
