Thumbs up Update: IceLink Plus for iPod - Australian distributor/installer

Ok, I have put a 'request to contact me' into this mob - the Car Kit Company .

I bet it's unlikely they know anything about pre-v9.55 firmware in 8 head units, but perhaps if enough of us owners of (older) 8's with iPods get in touch with them, they'll solve the problem :hopeful:

Thanks for the link Timbo

Keep us updated... by the sound of the website - they may not aware the Make specific requirement of the IceLink. Hope you have indicated the unit is to be specified to RX-8.

I am semi interested. Can we use it for MP3 player??

Yes, I indicated my need for a 2003 RX-8.

I think it is pretty much iPod specific. C'mon taka -- no iPod?! You're a gadget guy, too!

The IceLink plugs into the external CD stacker input at the back of the head unit. AFAIK, this means you can't add a 3rd party CD stacker, but the standard one built into the Aus spec 8 will continue to work.

I am not sure what happens if you have the optional MP3 player. Do you still have the standard CD stacker. If so, can you put 6 MP3 CDs into the stacker? If that was the case, IMHO there'd be no point in adding an iPod, given the cost of the IceLink.

hmm.... I sold my CD 6 stack to Omicorn within a month I got the car.

I heard that it might work... and yes I question the point of having IceLink when I can have 120 songs per disc.

Yes $400 can buy me one tyre or

The Richard Paul short shifter

or....

Have spoken with the Car Kit Company, who are now aware of issues connecting the 8, but are trying to get to the bottom of it all. Will call me back later in the week.

Whilst usually optimistic, I am not so in this case

Timbo, this may make your day. From OverLOAD's Custom Aux-In thread today.....the unit is still in Beta testing.

I have an early RX8, so I upgraded my head unit code anyway so I could use the PIE Adapter for XM Radio, and I use this unit for my IPOD. If I had to choose one unit, I would choose this unit- its cheaper, easier to install (the cable is too short on the PIE adapter) and the sound quality is the same- at least to my ears.

For those who have tried the soldering- thing with the cassette unit or the head unit, dont waste your time- use this thing.

I am getting one of OverLOAD's Aux-in modules from his pre-production run. SHould be here next week. $US50 + $US9 for postage -- it will at least give me a direct line in -- which is about all I was ever expecting to find Will report on how it goes.

BTW, have heard nothing further from the Car Kit Company -- I can imagine the delay is due to the fact no-one has clear information on what does or doesn't work on the 8

Finally, there has been one report link that the IceLink Plus does work with HU Firmware 9.53, but I am seeking confirmation.

I don't understand why you want to use cables or take the head unit out ...
I am quite happily playing my iPod through the car radio. The iPod sits in a cradle unit in the little box behind the gearstick , it is powered by the little power adapter in there, and the signal is strong and clear enough to even override commercial FM radio stations. When I drove to Byron and back late last year I just had the iPod on random play and didn't have to hear the same song twice.

Agree with taka -- I have the iTrip. It works ok as long as I am prepared to swap frequencies in certain locations... and it really does only work ok, at best. Am aware there are other FM transmitter type devices, some of which may have stonger power, but frankly I don't want to throw any more money at these types of things.

I had the iTrip and got rid of it. This other device is powered by the cradle, not the iPod. The Cradle is powered by the car, the signal is quite strong (as I said, it can actually override commercial stations, even in other cars near me at the lights ;-)) - but I use it in between settings. The station is easily set using up and down arrow buttons on the side of the cradle, and the station is shown on a LCD display on the cradle. All the iPod is doing is receive power from the car, and transmitting the music to the cradle via it's USB connector.

I bought mine at Next Byte at Glenunga in Adelaide, but I am sure you can get/order them at other Next Byte stores.

Spoke to a guy from The Car Kit Company. Aparently, the units they are importing are from the UK, where I think we need one from the US to be compatable with our cars. Dension USA sell them for around $US280.

The guy from The Car Company said they'd be happy to quote for the install, but I haven't bothered to place my order from the States yet.
