Tempted By A Modern Classic
Tempted By A Modern Classic
Just like L&L, I've recently been tempted by the thought of turbocharged rotary performance in the shape of the FD Rx7.
There's always been a special place in my heart for the FD since even today, 14years after its initial release, the styling is still sexy and sleek.
However the thought of buying a grey import with a hefty "price markup" was just a little bit too hard to swallow.
My cousin has actually just been stationed to Tokyo for the next two years so the opportunity has arisen to privately import one myself.
Finances pending, I'm hoping to locate and bring in probably the most collectible of the FD's, the 2002 Series VIII Spirit R Type A.
Only 1500 Spirit R's were built across three spec levels , Type A, B and C and these represented the final evolution of the FD.
Here's a link to a private webpage devoted to this model. I'm sure you'll all agree that this is the ultimate RX7.
The tough part at the moment is locating an absolutely stock example in Titanium with low mileage for a reasonable price.
Unfortunately these are quite collectible and the totally stock ones are fetching very close to their original purchase price of 5,000,000 Yen.
There are a few modified variants available but I'm looking for an original car since they represent the ultimate classic.
The other hurdle upon finding one is having to wait at least 12months before we can bring it back to Australia.
Anybody (DMRH?) who has any advice or experience regarding this model or the personal importation of such a car, please share them.

I came to a similar conclusion and hopefully one day get a 2002 Spirit R type A, but as u pointed out 5000,000 yen =$62.201.22 AUD +getting complaint in OZ plus insurance , the cost is high , then you would have to keep it under lock and key from the thieves as it would be highly sought after
cheers

if your brother is in .jp for a few years isn't it better for him to buy it and register it in his name and then bring it back to .au as a private import. from what I've read you don't have as many restrictions in compliancing as it isn't a low volume import

That's what my cousin and I plan on doing.
He'll buy the thing and register it in Japan and then bring it back as a personal import.
You have to at least own it for a year to qualify for private import.
The hurdle is to quality the Australian standard. I am sure the people who do that regularly will have a list to go through. Worth to go through it first before even buy the car.
