Sydney Cruise - Sunday 10 February 2008

There will be a cruise for all Sydney RX8ers on Sunday 10 February.

General plan is to cruise down to Wollongong via Royal National Park for lunch with north and south meetup points. Any south coasters/ACTers who wish to come along and meet up with us at Wollongong are more than welcome.

1st Meetup Point - 9.00am for 9.15 sharp departure

Mobil Servo at Artarmon just before turnoff from Pacific Highway onto Gore Hill Freeway (not the Boundary Road Mobil previously posted). Nearest cross street is Rimmington Street. I'll post a map at the end of the thread (can't seem to add images when I edit for some reason).

Mine's a titanium grey with Enkei rims - don't be shy, come and introduce yourself if we haven't met (or even if we have - my memory for names ain't great, lol).

As I am uncertain how many northerners wish to meet up before heading to the second meetup point, and I don't want to keep the southern contingent waiting, I shall be leaving at 9.15 sharp. If you're running late, just make your own way south and we'll see you at the next stop.

2nd Meetup Point - 10.00am for 10.15 sharp departure

Waratah Park near the corner of Rawson Avenue and Princes Highway, Sutherland.

This is a cycling track with good offstreet parking in plentiful supply on Sunday mornings (because the club only races on Friday nights in summer).

As you drive along Rawson Avenue away from Sutho shopping centre, you go past the Leisure Centre and some playing fields on your left, so do not make the mistake of entering the carparks for those facilities. The entrance into the cycling track carpark is just past a roundabout (i.e. the last roundabout before you hit the corner of Princes Highway). It's not very well signposted but you will know you're approaching it because there's a line of barrier poles just past the roundabout. The entrance is at the start of that line of poles. Carpark is well paved and marked with lines, etc.

It is a one way, longitudinal layout, with the clubhouse up near the other end from the entrance. So we do not bother any cyclists who may be parking there to train, etc, please park in the first available spots after you enter, rather than drive up to the other end.

Link to a site showing the location is below:

http://www.sutherlandshirecyclingclu.../location.html

General Route

We will depart Waratah Park at 10.15 sharp (or as soon as I get there, whichever is the later). Would everybody please ensure they have enough fuel, etc before getting to the meetup points, because we will not be waiting while you go to find a servo.

We will turn left out of the carpark and then turn right from Rawson Avenue onto the Princes Highway. We will then turn left at the next set of lights onto Farnell Avenue to head into the Royal National Park and down to Audley Weir. As we may not get everybody through the Rawson Avenue lights in one go, if possible I'll pull over somewhere convenient on Farnell to allow everybody to catch up. If that's not possible for some reason, please just try to catch up as best you can (without doing anything stupid).

From Audley Weir we will head straight onto Sir Bertram Stevens Drive and then onto Lady Wakehurst Drive (i.e. do not turn onto The McKell Avenue). We will then turn left onto Lawrence Hargrave Drive to head down the back of Stanwell Tops and onto the coast road through Coalcliff, Coldale, etc. This is a spectacular route owing to the bridges that arc out over the ocean and those who have not been this way before should have the camera ready to click off a few shots.

Just past Thirroul we rejoin the Princes Highway for the run into Wollongong. We will turn left at a set of lights from the Princes Highway into Bourke Street and then right along Cliff Road. At the roundabout, we will turn left up Endeavour Drive for our destination (which hopefully has enough parking for all the cars to be generally in the one spot).

Destination

Flagstaff Hill Park, Endeavour Drive, Wollongong.

This was the destination at a cruise a year or so ago, so some of you may be familiar with it. It is up on the headland with a commanding view looking south down the main beach. There is a fair bit of parking but it can get busy when the weather is good. Shops to buy food are a short stroll away.

Plan is to have some lunch there. Bring your own or buy it locally. Families welcome but unfortunately I'll be leaving mine at home this trip.

Departure time is up to you but those who want to attempt to head back north in company (not easy getting out of Wollongong that way because of all the lights) are welcome to find me and we'll head off together once everybody seems to have had enough meeting, greeting and eating. Route north will depend on a consensus as to whether people want to go back through the Park or just head up the freeway.

Notes

We have a lot of cars on this cruise, so formation flying and/or following the leader just isn't going to be possible at all times. While we will do our best to keep everyone together, it is up to you to know where you're going and how to get there, so if you do get separated, you'll find the rest of us again at the next stop/destination.

Please, no crazy overtaking moves, burnouts, etc (some particularly optimistic efforts on past cruises come to mind). If that's your go, piss off and do it somewhere away from the rest of us. Similarly, although we will have a short lash through some twisties if the opportunity presents, this is a cruise, not an attempt to set the land speed record from Sutho to Wollongong. The idea is to bring forum members together in person, not a Sunday morning thrash (which is always better done in smaller numbers and much earlier, mwahaha).

Feel free to take pics/vids and bring along CB's if you like. If posting pics, remember that some forum members prefer their plates blacked out.

I think that's about it. Look forward to seeing you all on the day.

Please register interest in this thread or PM me if you like.

Ottog 12-06-2007 08:41 AM

Hi Dave,

February is good. It'll give me a reason put a coat of wax on the beast.

matt13b 12-07-2007 02:08 AM

A sunday in feb is even better..

Revolver 12-07-2007 06:20 PM

Okay, how does Sunday 10 February sound?

Any ideas for destination? Somewhere with easy parking for a group, so we can keep the cars together that's not too far from a park or beach, preferably with BBQ amenities.

XLR83N 12-07-2007 06:38 PM

sounds good, is this a confirmed date so i take it off work?

Revolver 12-07-2007 06:41 PM

Still tenative at this stage until we hear back from a few more people.

Keep tabs on the thread and I'll confirm the date which seems the most popular shortly.

Revolver 12-10-2007 02:22 PM

Well, we seem to have 5 cars so far but could do with plenty more for this kind of day.

So, all those Sydney people who reckon they want to come along to a cruise - get off your asses and let me know if you're coming. :)

blakdawg 12-10-2007 04:30 PM

Hi all, i would like to join. Are we confirmed for the 10th Feb?
Where are we cruzin too?
Can my brother come, he does not drive a RX8 though :(
But has a Evo8, so still an 8 :)

Revolver 12-11-2007 03:04 PM

G'day blakdawg.

You're welcome and your brother too.

Yes, 10 February it is given the lack of opposition to date.

I'll amend the first post accordingly.

takahashi 12-11-2007 06:38 PM

Changed the dates for you in the title. Have fun guys.

mogley 12-11-2007 06:51 PM

I'm interested.
Last one was a blast.

Cronullarx8 12-15-2007 05:44 PM

I am a cruise virgin but timing and location works well for me. Put me down.

Revolver 12-15-2007 07:33 PM

Thanks Taka.

Good news Mogley, Rod.

I'll firm up details in the new year.

Currently enjoying Sanctuary Cove atm. Golf buggies need more power, lol...

MACCAA 12-16-2007 12:00 AM

Should be OK for this one.
Cheers
Len

mikeyr 12-16-2007 12:06 AM

Do you mean plus another car or just a passenger? If the latter, no need to advise because everyone will be expected to cater for their own food and drink.

South is firming up (I think we promised to do this next time we cruised anyways).

The Sutherland meetup point is easy for me - the old pushbike track (where I used to race many, many, many years ago :uhh: ) has a decent sized carpark and is handy to the road into the National Park. I'll try to dig out the street address for those who don't know it (those who want GPS coordinates can stuff their Navmans where the sun don't shine). If any southerners have a better idea, speak now, etc...

As for a north meetup point, I suggest a Macca's that is convenient to the Paccy Highway that is above the approaches to the bridge freeways, as I propose a no-nonsense route to the Sutho meetup point (i.e. straight thru the tunnel and down the main roads). Mikey, any ideas?

Suggest northerners familiarise themselves with the Sutho location in case they get separated (are too slow :spank: ).

Revolver 12-17-2007 07:23 PM

The place at Sutho I have in mind is on Rawson Avenue, just before you get to the intersection with the Princes Highway. As you leave Sutho along Rawson, you drive past some ovals on your left and it is just past those.

From there we will turn off down Farnell Avenue into the National Park.

Let me know if this needs more clarification (or changed to a better location).

matt13b 12-17-2007 08:51 PM

Ok.I'll be meeting at the north location to cruise south..

Hahaha, no sweat Tuan. He's added.

13 cars so far - not bad but we can do better I'm sure. C'mon Sydney people - come along and put some faces to avatars. Some of them are NOTHING like you imagined, lol...

Hey, a mate of mine wants to cruz as well. He rolls in an RX7. Its still a rotor and Mazda but has twin hair dryers :). So that's 3 for me. Me- RX8, my Bro Evo-8, and my mate-RX7.

Also depends on the weather :)

I can fit the wife and both kids in mine, so bring your 8!:eyetwitch

matt13b 12-19-2007 08:08 PM

Also, spoke to my dad last night and he was interested in coming too in his Lotus Exige S? Is that ok dave? I told him he would have to go at the back behind all the cars with better engines than his..

Revolver 12-19-2007 09:40 PM

Hahaha, for sure Matt. It's turning out to be a mongrel-fest anyways, so why the hell not.

The aim of this cruise is a social gathering rather than an RX8 parade, hence MACCAA's attendence in the Pogo Terror.

I draw the line at Camry's and VW Eos' though!! :spank:

Fair enough - I was just teasing you.

Yours can be the mothership for the cruise!

Mind you, I think safety applies to every passenger - born and unborn. I've never understood the distinction - they're all precious to you (except when they wake you up too early after getting on it the night before :banghead: ).

Doneski.

Does this mean we'll have the green light?? :ylsuper:

WhiteRain 12-27-2007 09:47 PM

Hmm this date looks good for me. I've marked it in my calendar.

Assuming we get good (ie. dry) weather that day I'm about 90% sure I'll be there.

I understand your point of view e5cape but before we right off the RX8, lets put a balanced view out there! Firstly I think we all agree that no car is 100 percent safe or collision-proof, and clearly your choice of vehicle in terms of space and comfort for your pregnant wife is a better one.

But it's the safety features which ultimately save lives, and your post inspired me to do a comparison of the two vehicles. I was surprised to find the RX8 crash test ratings were higher than I first thought....but I couldn't find one on the Hummer. I did find however that Hummers get a measily 8mpg, so to all those people who complain about fuel economy think of Justin!

Here are the RX8 crash test stats... http://www.safercar.gov/Cars/3534.html.

..and here are the Hummers vs RX8 features... http://hummerbuyersguide.theautochan...90&car3=&car4=

Hummer Safety

Driver Airbag............................................ ..............Std.
Front Side Airbag............................................ .........N/A
Front Side Airbag with Head Protection.......................N/A
Passenger Airbag............................................ ........Std.
Side Head Curtain Airbags.......................................N/A
Second Row Side Airbags.........................................N/A
Second Row Side Airbag with Head Protection............N/A
Power Windows........................................... ...........Std.
Electronic Parking Aid..............................................N/A
Trunk Anti-Trap Device............................................ N/A

Hummer Braking & Traction

4 Wheel Drive/All Wheel Drive ...............................Standard
ABS Brakes (2 or 4 Wheel)....................................Standard
Automatic Load-Leveling........................................N/A
Electronic Brake Assistance....................................N/A
Limited Slip Differential or Axle...............................N/A
Locking Differential...................................... .........N/A
Traction Control........................................... .......Standard
Vehicle Stability Control System...........................Optional

Interesting stats all round, but if I were in your shoes I'd probably go the Hummer, and you have a good excuse.

It is also good however to have a thoroughbred event....

Revolver 12-31-2007 09:16 PM

Enforcer...thanks for the details post , but my Hummer is a H3 not the H2
therefore is have better fuel economy, actually it is about the same compare to my Rx8
i get 400kms per 60L tank .

H3 does have both driver and front passenger curtain airbag , and 2 rear airbags.
In total it have 6 airbags.

Revolver 01-02-2008 11:27 PM

Gawd! Enuff with the Hummer talk already. Unless you're hit by a fully loaded semi, something tells me your airbag count will remain academic, lol.

I'll be in the Shire on Sunday to see some old friends, so I might do a bit of recon on the Sutho meet-up point and confirm, etc.

DMRH 01-03-2008 01:33 AM

Reads like a worthy cruise.

If your a ROTARY enthusiast, there is an AUSROTARY cruise on 20 JAN 08

http://www.ausrotary.com/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=143859

Can see the Cosmo going to that one.

REgards

Revolver 01-03-2008 02:40 PM

Cosmo and her owner most welcome to join us Dave if you're interested. :)

Revolver 01-03-2008 10:55 PM

Have updated the first post with a few more details.

Gradually sneaking up on the details, so if anyone has any suggestions or feedback, speak up now. Will firm things up over the next week or so.

Numbers are growing kiddies. Looks like it'll be a fun day out, so if you're umming and aahing just say yes. :)

If we extend it down to the 'Gong are there any ACTer's who would like to drive up to meet us??
