I had a similar thing happen when i purchased my Honda S2000 a couple of years ago, although i went to them :D Scared the crap outa me though, the car had come from QLD, and the RTA (I used to live in Sydney) said they were doing random checks on all cars coming from interstate & were checking for cut'n'shut jobs, etc. Mine was ok - thank goodness!
