Rx8 Ouch...

A very good friend of mine took his 2004 6 MT RX8 in for its 60K 'killer' service. OUCH was all he could think of when on top of the $800 service bill....

Lights were going on and off and the dash console was cracked which would cost $800.00 to replace .....when he quizzed the Service Manager on how it could crack he had no idea and no, its not covered by warranty.

Then....engine mounts have sagged. In 2006 they were part of the warranty replacement program by Mazda (2003/04 did not have the heat shield fitted) and sagged over time causing roughness at low idle etc. Quoted over $1,000.

Front brakes and disks are worn and have around 3,000kms left - replacement cost $1,400. WTF?

Suffice to say, he has held off on the work and will closely examine the report. He's going to push Mazda for a cost share on engine mounts and console issue .....but things look grim.

Your thoughts on the quotes Mazda have provided are appreciated....

Did your friend have the engine mounts replaced in 2006?
If he's gone another 2 years without having them done - wow
didn't he get a notice from Mazda????

Wait he took it in with out a cracked dash and picked it up with a cracked dash and lights going on and off?

If that is the case I would raise holy hell.

And yes he should write Mazda AU about the engine mounts.

The engine mounts should be covered by Mazda but good luck on the dash console cracking (unless it did happen while the car was with his service centre). That'll be treated as wear and tear, harsh Aussie sun, bullshit, bullshit, etc, etc...

Maybe a second opinion from another Mazda dealer on those things?

Typical Ford rotors.
I had an EF Fairmont in 1995 and the rotors were shot after 20000k. They wanted $800 to replace them.
I got them replaced under warranty 3 times in the 110k km that I owned the car.
Contrast that with 170000km out of a Holden Caprice.
Unfortunately 60000 will probably be fair wear and tear.
You can get good rotors quite cheaply. They are easy to replace too.

If there was a warranty on the engine mounts they should come to the party.

Good luck with the cracked dash.

it is looking pretty grim

the best bet would be to go aftermarket and get it installed by an independant mechanic

bda make some nice aftermarket rotors and ebc & bendix make relatively cheap but good brakes

keep eyes and ears out junked 8s which you can scavenge parts on.

as for the engine mounts try the US parts site. theyre a hell of a lot cheaper than the au ones

clicky here!

UPDATE: Circuit board surgery behind the dash....it was cracked alright, and the prospect of a $800.00 job was looming. A $5 tube of Alradite was a godsend and patience the virtue. All the right lights showed up and are working again.

Then one of the screws fell behind the front vents......it was finally extracted by a piece of blue tac on the end of a long bambo stick.

The engine mount issue was raised with Mazda, and he was told it was never part of a recall notice, but a replacement program which needed to be brought to their attention prior to service....WTF?....still awaiting an outcome.

Front brakes and disks - quoted replacement $1,400. Drews advice on US parts, and everyones feedback has been appreciated....
