rx-8 oil
hi
i went city mazda to buy a new battery (panasonic sealed unit) for my 1992 mx-5. only $300. greaty value considering the original battery lasted 12 years.
i noticed that they had a huge amount of rx-8 oil. i bought 5 litres.
just a question, at the last service, they put in castrol-r synthetic into the rx-8; can i put the mazda rx-8 non-synthetic oil for top-ups or should i just use castrol-r for top-ups until the next oil change?
regards
mike

Should not mix oil. So top up with Castrol R
You can ask them to change it to Mazda Rotary - they only charge $50 for it. $55 you get 5L and you only use 4L to change theoretically.
On Monday I went to get a Mazda logo badge. An unfortunate debadging accident.
Gomez FYI, the badge is cheap, only $25

No problems mixing oil. Even doing a full oil change will not get all the old stuff out, here's what I posted in an earlier thread about the RX-8 engine oil capacity....
So you can see, if you dump the oil and change the filter, you only change 3.5 litres of a total 5.8 litre system. You can't get the old stuff out anyway, it'll take 3 oil changes to purge the car of the original oil. If you've got money to burn, you can do all 3 oil changes on the one day I s'pose!

you consume oil as well Mez, by adding the same oil with time... you will get the whole oil replaced.
I think 2 oil change rather than 3 due to the fact that rotary consume oil.

Assuming that your oil is evenly mixed between oil changes and you don't top up, and my late night maths is correct:
After 1 change there will be 2.3L of old oil
After 2 changes there will be .91L of the original oil
After 3 changes there will be .36L of the original oil
After 4 changes there will be .14L of the original oil
So with top ups, most of the original oil will be gone on the 3rd change.

rev it up
My understanding is that the Castrol R Synthetic 5w30 is semi synthetic. So I assume it would be more compatible than a fully senthetic oil as thet are both mineral based oils
For a long time it seemed that this was the only option until this new rotaty oil turned up.
However, during my last service a few weeks ago the service guy mentioned thet they use the Castrol stuff. So it seems that Mazda Australia is yet to standardise the oil issue. I purchases a 5L castrol oil a while ago and I use this for top up.

We seems to have a lot of male ego in this forum LOL
I tempted to go back to Castro R, or even Redline. Anyhow, it does not make a lot of difference anyway

I'll continue to use Rotary oil, but if I'm stuck in the Simpson Desert low on oil, and the local camel herder has Mobil1 in his backpack......I'll use it!

skc - I just had mine serviced at Aspley. Asked them what they normally put in and was told Castrol TXT Softec. I asked them to use the Mazda Rotary oil as this is what I am topping up with - they had no problems and left the remaining oil in the car for me. It ended up being cheaper than the softec, not that I was worried about price.

Sorry to bring this thread back to life, but I can not find clear information on the RX-8 oil issue. I know that I should carry at least a litre of spare oil in the car at any time, but what do I buy?
1. The Mazda oil;
2. The Castrol TXT Softec 5w-30
3. The Castrol R synthetic 5w-30
Can anyone confirm which oil Grand Prix Mazda is using these days?
Thanks
Adrian

for my 1000km service, i asked them to chuck in a 1L bottle of the rotary oil. Cost? around 10 bucks. It now sits in the storage bin between the back seats.

Buy the Mazda oil IMO. It costs the same and it has been specifically designed for the Renesis. How can you go wrong?
I also don't think you need to carry a litre of oil where ever you go. Unless you think you are going to have a catastrophic leak mid drive. The Ren does burn oil, but if you check it once a week, or even once a month, you're not going to run out. I've found I burn about 250mL per 1000km.
Reminds me of my Grandmother who still drives her Gemini around with a bottle of water in the back in case the radiator overheats!
One more thing.... F-111's....
