Rev-limited to 7k?! Argh
Hey guys
I posted this in the tech forum but thought i'd get a little local opinion too.
I've got an '03 8, with about 45000kms on the clock. The only other relevant information is that I recently topped up the oil, have had the car serviced on time and AFAIK there are no coolant or other fluid leaks.
Anyway, the other day I was driving down the Great Western Highway on a typical sunny Sydney day, probabaly about mid-20's to low 30's and had been driving for about 20 minutes prior on the M4 heading west.
Now the Great Western Highway is a big straight road especially near Eastern Creek where I was and so I thought i'd stretch the legs a little.
Long story short, the car did fine until i hit 7k or so revs in 4th and the car wouldn't rev any higher and consequently I couldn't go any faster. I changed up to 5th and started to slow down.
Thinking something was wrong, I took off at the next lights and decided to try to replicate the problem and noticed in 1st it would get stuck, 2nd was fine, and 3rd also got stuck around the same revs.
The engine still revs fine at 7k and I don't lose power.
After that I got to where I needed to be and an hour later I tested it on the way home and it was all fine and dandy and she revs all the way to the beep.
I'm just a little worried though because it's an engine issue and I'd rather try to diagnose it now before it becomes worse; if it does.
There are no CEL, coolant or other malfunction lights.
The only other relevant information i can think of is that after one very very windy night in Sydney my car was being pelted by gumnuts and i ran over a lot of broken branches and debris, swearing to myself I will cut down every tree that lines the Hills District.
When I got home, there was a sort of burning smell coming from my car that was quite potent and filled the garage. Almost like burning plastic. I suspected it might have been some debris like a plastic bag that got caught under the car and got melted or something. The smell has now subsided.
Anyone have any ideas before I ram-raid my local Mazda dealer?

7 k in 4th is somewhere around 140 right? (only guessing)
Get caught doing that there in the 80 zone and you will be banged up faster than those girls that were laughing at you from the side of the road.

are you sure that it beeped at 7k?
dont flame me for saying this, but maybe you imagined it beeped around 7k - it is possible it can just happen that fast that the blink of the eye wont realise it.
Burning smell if you reved the crap out of your car it could be burnt excess fuel that was sittin there for ages.
sorry i dont have any technical advice.

7k in 4th on a public road[and trying to go faster...]
Hopefully it's Mazda's FW limiter coming in......
Seriously this sort of thing on a public forum does us no good at all.If you want to go quick,go to the track......but then most of these keyboard warriors are only fast [a]on public roads or [b] on the web.

Well i don't mean the car beeps at 7k.
It just stops going any higher.
In the gears that 'work' it beeps still at the correct redline.
And no the car has been fine since that day.
I haven't really had the chance to redline it past 2nd gear though but 1st and 2nd seem fine. I've hit 7kish on 3rd and it seems fine too.
Haven't had enough safe road to do 4th.

might sound far fetch, but what about your fuel level? The other day at nats when my fuel level is low, the car just won't rev past 7k (or maybe close to 8k), happens a few time before I realised it might be the fuel, fill 'er up and works as normal ever since.
