Official Mazda Oil - now available
Let me see...
Or am I missing something here...
Cheers,
Hymee.
- I have an owners manual that does not tell me that I shouldn't put synthetic oil in. Other than that, the owners manual is full of stupid warnings ...
- My Mazda Authorised Service Agent puts Castrol Synthetic R 5W30 oil in my car, and have not advised me that it has invalidated the warranty.
- The actual "Mazda Genuine" endorsed product warns that synthetics should not be used in pre-renesis engines. This oil must have been manufacturered after the existence of the Renesis, otherwise why would it have the word "resesis"? Therfore, one could be reasonably safe to assume that synthetic oils are offically santioned for Renesis use.
Or am I missing something here...
Cheers,
Hymee.

I'm with Hymee...That is the Official Pre-Renesis Oil...
Sold at Mazda outlets, and suitable for all rotaries....incl Renesis.
The message to be taken from the bottle is that synthetic oil (which this isn't), should not be used in pre-Renesis rotaries, but is suitable for use in the Renesis.
Hydrocarbonly Yours, Gomez...

Because Mazda have defined their Rotary oil as a mineral oil, I shall now endeavour to use mineral oil wherever possible, although it seems I can use a synth in my Renesis, if needs be
Welcome to the wonderful world of "what oil is best to use in my rotary"
For what it's worth, among the executive of REACT (as a semi-random sample) we have one 12a, one carbed 13b and four variations on turbo'd 13bs. The 12a uses Valvoline Premium XLD, as does the carbed 13b. One of the 13bTs uses Mobile 1 [0] and the others use Penrite HPR (which is semi-synth?) of some description.
According to Reliance here in Canberra, Oil is Oil [1] and they use Valvoline XLD because it's good and it's cheap. I would say that as long as the oil you put in conforms to the weight specified by Mazda for the Renesis you won't be hurting the engine.
There is an long thread about this topic on AusRotary in the Tech Archive section. Click Here. There is another thread that is also quite interesting.
[0] Yes, Mazda say not to use synthetic in pre-Renesis engines. Some people I know swear by it, even in old engines like 12as, others say it gunks them up. I used Mobil 1 in my 1969 MGB roadster with no problems and the garage I used to take the MG to now recommends Shell Helix, fully synth.
[1] Despite what Castrol will tell you

Before you do Hymee, can you explain your position again... I'm not quite sure of your opinion on the use of synthetic :p
:D
Also, can we automatically re-open this thread monthly in order to comply with forum unwritten rule #1: Regularly debate the merits of synthetic versus mineral oil.

Synthetic or mineral?
I guess we are all spending too much time debating this issue and possibly not spending enough time checking to see that the engine has enough oil in it.
So I guess everyone should agree that they need to extricate themselves from the computer and go check the oil level in their 13B to make sure that it has some sort of "oil" in it.

I can sense another HYMEECORP opportunity .....
Given the scarsity of the 'right' oil .. and the lack of storage space for an oil bottle, maybe we need an underbonnet oil storage facility ...... Grills, Cats and Pints!!!

What - you mean Grills, Exhausts and Tunes won't be enough to keep y'all happy!
Hey sco, did I say this one before or not? "There are more myths about oils than there are about sex!"
D:D :p
Cheers,
Hymee.

Being water based makes it organic/mineral based as opposed to synthetic doesn't it?

A 1L bottle fits nicely in the pocket in the boot passthrough cover. I keep mine there wrapped in an old T-shirt and a plastic bag.

Anyone want the Castrol R or I can still keep it?

I buy your point... you have convinced me... then again why put the oil in the boot?

I'm not here to convince you - just sharing a tip - do as you please

Now I think sco's idea is very good
I always keep mine in the car as I check the oil when I fill the fuel tank. By the time the tank is filled and I've paid 5 minutes has usually passed and it is ideal to check the oil then.
You guys are so last year :P
LOL
Reason Mazda said not to use synthetics was because One type of oil (Mobil 1 from memory) expanded the oil control rings after extended use.
It was either oil control or it was something similar !
I used to run a Semi Synthetic on my FD but changed to Mazda 5W-30 and now everyone including 5 FD race cars now run the Mazda 5W-30.
Its 10 times better than anything else.
Apart from the MS Rotary Oil that is.
Good to see you finally got the rotary oil. And cheers fro the greif it caused me - LOL !!!!!

Sorry about bringing this up again guys but i rang several mazda dealers in Sydney regarding which oil they use in services and they qouted 10w-40 in Castrol Magnatec (which is a standard oil).
Now Castrol formula R is a high performance oil but comes in 5w-30 which is fully synthetic.
Just wondering if any1 has put that in because if so i will start to use that oil once i have finished the magnatec 10w-40.
